  • I second everyone who left a comment here. Please give us this feature! =) I sometimes get lost when running alone and I always have to check maps to see where I am. If I never return home, it's on you. =P

  • I've given up on Strava.  It is no longer my primary cycling app.  Until they implement audible turn-by-turn solution, Ill upload rides on a free account to look at my segmetns for fun.  I need functionality in routing and Strava seems 100% uninterested in providing this.  Its a shame.  Ride With GPS will keep my business.

  • Adding my vote it's two years from this thread starting. Time to make this reality. My $0.02 (or $60/year)

  • Strava is so great except for the lack of this feature. It is great for recording a ride and when running on it's own it hasn't ever let me down. I previously used MapmyRide which was great when it didn't stop mid-ride - as it did frequently.

So in my quest for a workable solution I tried OSMAnd. The interface is IMO overly complicated. However I did manage to take a few routes from Strava eventually. This was a bit fiddly but once you have worked out how to do one it is fairly straight forward. Then I tried using OSMAnd for directions and logging the ride in Strava. Perhaps it is my phone, but both apps lost the GPS signal. This has not happened when using Strava on its own.

As OSMAnd is so complicated, my next try is to use the free version of RunGO. Transferring routes has so far proved easy, and it has a cool browser based route design tool. I will try using just this app on my next ride for both directions and progress logging. Wish me luck.

So thank you Strava for leaving out voice directions - it has been interesting investigating these other apps. Who knows? I may find an app I prefer. But seriously - can we have this as soon as possible so we can stick with one app ... yours?

Readers: If you would also like this feature, please add your vote to the thread using the very faint up arrow next to the topic header (votes on comments don't seem to count!)

  • It's the end of 2016.. why don't we have this function?

  • You recently introduced Beacon because you are concerned about user safety, but having to continuously wake and look at the phone on my stem to check my route is far less safe than getting audio turn by turn directions. Please implement this asap. This feature might just make me go Premium.

  • Yes, turn by turn voice directions for a Strava route would really set this app apart from others!!

  • it's depressing to see that this topic has been going for so long without a solution yet from Strava. The Use Route functionality is rubbish. No turn by turn directions means you have to leave the screen on and then the screen doesn't change to match your location, you have to pinch and zoom, which is really dangerous when riding. I wish Strava would focus on fixing the functionality they have instead of bringing out new niche ideas like live segments or the ability to follow people live.

  • Agree with everone asking for this. And when you get round to it, please use the phone speaker? I dont use headphones so I can hear the traffic 😩

  • I need turn by turn, right now if i don't have my eyes glued to the map, i and accurately ride segments or previous routes.. I can't do that on a bike safely

  • I support the multiple requests for turn by turn instructions. It is dangerous to be constantly looking at the phone when riding a bike and there is a high possibility that I will miss a turn on a an unfamiliar route. As cycle tourer, this is a HIGH value add for me. Without it Strava value reduces significantly and if I could get this feature elsewhere I would/will move.

  • I'm currently on a premium trial and expected this to be part of it, very disappointed that it isn't. I'm trying out some new routes at the moment to get a bit of variety so without this my options are stopping every so often to check the route or memorising it! Will be checking out other options to get this feature.

  • I am able to get voice tufn by turn directions from Tom Tom running in the background sith Strava. However Tom Tom is very difficult to program a route if you are not going straight to an address. Then if you deviate from the planned route and dont pass through a waypoint it wants to keep going back. Strava is very easy to set up for routes but a route is pointless if I cant get my iphone to guide me along the route. Hmm should get a Cycling GPS perhaps.

  • Can someone from Strava please comment on whether this is being considered? I tried Premium for the Beacon feature and decided that was enough to make the jump. However, I would really like this feature more than any other. I am told, but can't confirm that MapMyRide does this (or something like it) as part of their paid service. If I'm going to pay for a premium service it might as well be the one that gives me the features I need.

  • There's been some good suggestions for voice guidance apps while Strava get their act together. I have come across RunGo (free) which is aimed at runners. It's good because:

    • Routes can be imported from Strava
    • It has a web based route editor which is easy to use.
    • Routes can be edited to ensure voice prompts are in appropriate locations.
    • Rides can be recorded.

    Negatives are :

    • You need to edit imported routes to add voice prompts before you use them.
    • The Android version doesn't have the facility to export the ride data. So no way to get it into Strava. (Feature on it's way)

  • Indeed, I too am on a premium trial and don't plan to continue it without this feature.

So that makes two features Strava is missing for cyclists and runners:

    1) a routes directory (seriously, have you ever tried elastic search? takes like 15 minutes!)

    2) turn by turn directions

The lack of a route directory is unforgivable. The directions things seems like a problem one could throw money at, say like by selling premium memberships and then taking the funding from them to pay some mapping/app company to implement the feature for them. Just saying.

  • FYI, for anyone interested, RIDE WITH GPS does do turn by turn audible directions 9and on screen if thats what you like) very well - however it is only on their premium membership $60 / year.  They've actually been doing it for at least 3 years now, maybe more. That one feature is why Strava is my "secondary" biking app.  I only upload stuff to Strava to compare segments. We've been asking for htis for years with no responce.  Either they are not paying attention or dont care.  I've yet to find a free, easy, reliable solution.  Ride With GPS came closest for me.

  • Ha, i am surprised to find this feature in wish list. It looks so logic while you are biking. Otherwise routes are pretty useless.

  • Locus pro. It is free from the app store and you can upgrade to pro for a couple bucks. You can import gpx routes that you create elsewhere like Ride With GPS and then load the route and locus will give you turn by turn voice navigation. You can also record your ride at same time and then when you stop locus can auto export it to strava if you set it up that way in the settings. Awesome little gps app. Give Locus Pro a try. It is really the go to I think in this situation.

  • Adding my request to the long list here. Such a basic functionality, and very surprising that it is not already available. In the absence of audio navigation, making and running routes is a bit of a waste of time on Strava.

  • Citymapper is the best navigation app for commuting for me so far.
Strava all the way for training and planned routes though.

  • It is possible to do this with RidewithGPS basic subscription and cycletracksGPS on a windows phone. Add turn by turn directions to a GPX file using the RidewithGPS website then load it onto the phone. You can then ride the route with voice guidance

  • Adding my name to the request list. I have low vision and am not able to follow a visual map on the phone. I need voice prompts while navigating. Every other GPS device has this, so seems basic enough of a feature to add. Would be willing to upgrade to Premium if needed. I'm in the DK100 and oter gravel races this year and would prefer to use a single device/app for navigation and live ride stats.

Strava seems to have the best screen setup while riding, I plan to use it for my stats. I'll have either OsmAnd in the bakcground or MapMyRide.

  • This is almost useless without turn by turn. The only way to make this feature more relevant is to add. If you are cycling or running you don't want to stop every few minutes to see if you're on course. It's ridiculous to withhold such a simple, standard feature. The API calls are all there for you to access.

  • I'm looking for this feature too... planning multi-day rides in Italy and definitely don't want to have to look at my smartphone when I already have a detailed route planned.  I would certainly pay for premium to have this function.

I do like the route creation within Strava and MapMyRide for planning/sharing - but it's 2017 - let's get voice navigation added to route creation!

  • I will echo the sentiments in this thread. I upgraded via the free 30 day trial expecting to have access to turn by turn navigation available. The route builder is fantastic, but of no use to me when I'm in the middle of a ride.

I certainly will not be continuing with a "paid" premium membership, as I do not consider it premium in any sense of the word.

Bummer, cause your app and service was so close to brilliant.

  • I'd like to add my voice to this feature request as well.  I actually went on a ride with the expectation that this was there, and was shocked to not see it part of the app.
