We are aware of this longstanding feature request in our community and thank everyone for their contribution. It's always difficult to prioritize projects at Strava, and turn-by-turn notifications for route navigation is not currently planned.

Continue to leave your feedback as we revisit our project prioritization each quarter.

  • Strava keeps asking me to become a premium member. Why would I do that when it can't do what I need it to most; give me directions on my route. Add this feature and I will become a premium member. Until then, I'll keep searching for an app I like better that can do what I need it to do. Hope I don't find the other app first, because I probably wont switch back. What are you guys doing with all those premium memberships anyway, if not putting them into app development of what people are asking for?

  • While running, my iPhone is in my back pocket, and taking the phone out to view the course on a map would inevitably make me slow down, or even stop in some cases. Not to mention that with the sunlight, a map is very hard to look at on the iPhone or similar device, when outdoors.

Audio turn-by-turn is absolutely needed, pretty much like a car GPS "in 20 meters, turn left".

Note: this is already a popular demand, originally discussed in this very popular thread (more than 100 votes): Create a Route and send to Strava Mobile App for navigation. https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21584169

  • Same on the bike. Turn-by-turn navigation would simply made me switch to the Strava app.

  • I also think this would make more people upgrade to the premium version.  This facility would be an excellent addition to the Strava feature set.  Keep improving Strava.  Thanks.

  • apparently this is one of the highest requested things for mapmyride, but they are unable to do it due to violates their terms of service. https://support.mapmyfitness.com/hc/communities/public/questions/200075164-Turn-by-turn-voice-directions

Still, this feature would probably persuade me to being a premium member.

  • As a premium member, I too was hoping for turn-by-turn directions along w/ the routes roll-out inside the Strava app.  Would be great to have the option to toggle the turn by turn directions, as well as the segment update, audio on/off separately on the record screen as I can see just wanting one or the other on specific rides.  Also there are several times where I know most of the route really well and don't need the extra notification.  The segment update audio is great and works really well pausing the music player audio, making it's announcement, and the continuing back to my music player.  Would love to have the direction notifications do the same.

Please tally another vote for Turn by Turn directions!

  • Some people just don't want to make money...there is a huge demand and no supply...crazy. This would definitely sway me to become a premium member.

  • Turn by turn voice navigation is something I would be willing to pay for if it were included in the premium service.

  • I would love to see this feature too.  Today I was riding, with google maps shouting directions at me from my iPhone in my jersey back pocket.  I also had strava audio announcements turned on, but it seemed that only one of the voice overs would work (google).

Would be fab if i could run everything via strava - audio announcements / turn by turn directions. i'm sure running gmaps and strava at the same time is more of a battery suck.

Keep up the stonking job you guys are doing.  Stava is brilliant and i'm looking forward to future updates.

    Thanks!

  • Would love this feature. The route builder on a computer web browser is very easy to use and is brilliant at minor tweaking the route.

Surely all the voice turn by turn needs to do is read the already generated cue-sheet when you get close to the turn?

Would definitely pay for this voice or even text turn-by-turn for pre-made routes.

  • You recently introduced Beacon because you are concerned about user safety, but having to continuously wake and look at the phone on my stem to check my route is far less safe than getting audio turn by turn directions. Please implement this asap. This feature might just make me go Premium.

  • OsmAnd works very well for Android users... Hightly  Recommend.   But would be great to have Strava with full functionality - Bluetooth 4.0 HRM/speed/cadence/, turn by turn directions - to avoid multiple apps running simulaneously.

  • it's depressing to see that this topic has been going for so long without a solution yet from Strava. The Use Route functionality is rubbish. No turn by turn directions means you have to leave the screen on and then the screen doesn't change to match your location, you have to pinch and zoom, which is really dangerous when riding. I wish Strava would focus on fixing the functionality they have instead of bringing out new niche ideas like live segments or the ability to follow people live.

  • RideWithGPS seems to offer turn-by-turn navigation with their Basic membership (not free).  I've been holding off in hopes that Strava will offer it and I could upgrade my Strava membership rather than pay for the RideWithGPS membership.  My last ride may have convinced me to pull the trigger....had to stop several times to figure out my next turns.  Will have to export/import my ride data.

  • Strava is so great except for the lack of this feature. It is great for recording a ride and when running on it's own it hasn't ever let me down. I previously used MapmyRide which was great when it didn't stop mid-ride - as it did frequently.

So in my quest for a workable solution I tried OSMAnd. The interface is IMO overly complicated. However I did manage to take a few routes from Strava eventually. This was a bit fiddly but once you have worked out how to do one it is fairly straight forward. Then I tried using OSMAnd for directions and logging the ride in Strava. Perhaps it is my phone, but both apps lost the GPS signal. This has not happened when using Strava on its own.

As OSMAnd is so complicated, my next try is to use the free version of RunGO. Transferring routes has so far proved easy, and it has a cool browser based route design tool. I will try using just this app on my next ride for both directions and progress logging. Wish me luck.

So thank you Strava for leaving out voice directions - it has been interesting investigating these other apps. Who knows? I may find an app I prefer. But seriously - can we have this as soon as possible so we can stick with one app ... yours?

Readers: If you would also like this feature, please add your vote to the thread using the very faint up arrow next to the topic header (votes on comments don't seem to count!)

  • I've given up on Strava and gone to "Ride with GPS" which does offer voice navigation. Too bad Strava doesn't either monitor this site or care! Either way Strava should be embarrassed that they don't interact with those few faithful customers that want to help them improve their products so I'm going to shamelessly recommend a competitor site using Strava's own tool for improving their own product...the joke is on Strava:(

I'm impressed with Ride with GPS and recommend it if you want voice nav to existing routes created by others from other apps like MapMyRide. It has easy import of file formats from other applications and lets you modify any route and then add the turn by turn instructions by recreating the route...this is a bit clunky but it works.

  • You absolutely must implement turn by turn navigation. I still can't believe you have not added it. Just like adding possibilities for (creating) interval training (with audio).

  • Turn by Turn will definitely give power and edge (no pun intended for Garmin) to other devices and apps in the market.  If you truly want to conquer the gps/computer/cyclometer market this is a must.  Not only that it could make more $$$ for Strava it is a safety issue as well - looking down on your phone going into an intersection is the worst time and accident waiting to happen.

Imagine this.  You are not sure to turn into this intersection or not.  You pull out your phone from your pocket.  Screen is locked so you have to swipe or use your fingerprint.  Then you look at your phone with the glare of the sun.  I don't even want to imagine what could happen next as you are distracted 5 or so seconds going into an intersection.

Thanks for listening.  I'm a premium subscriber and I think we could make this the Greatest app....

  • It's been said already, but I'll repeat it.  The solution for Android is to use OsmAnd.   1)Free;  2) offline maps (no data consumption);  3) accurate turn by turn voice directions;  4) can use either pre-set GPX file, or navigate to a set destination;  5)  will auto reroute if you get off course;  6) low battery consumption;  7) can save GPX file of your route;  8)  did I mention FREE?

Once you understand the interface, it's awesome.   Still hope strava adds this feature but until then:   OsmAnd.

  • the app must have:

    • turn-by-turn audio and video notification
    • auto-zoom on change direction
    • map orientation (north, travel direction, etc.)
    • more detailed map
    • some of the basic features that normally are found on any navi system

  • Android only, but I have had success with the Bike Tracker app (the one from PC Ability) for turn by turn navigation. It links to the routes on your free RideWithGPS account (You need an account, but not a paid one). Bike Tracker is also FREE ! You can save your phone's data usage allowance by downloading your routes to your phone on your wifi. There is a map option (which would use your data allowance), but in 20+ rides, I have never needed to use it. I let the app guide me and if I deviate off the route, I trust the app to guide me back to the route. The phone stays in my bag - its too much of a distraction to be checking maps at junctions.

I have simultaneously run Bike Tracker (to follow the RideWithGPS route) and Strava (to record the ride on Strava) with no problems

I've found Bike Tracker quite versatile and have also used it for turn by turn navigation on several walks.

Not tried the RideWithGPS app for turn by turn navigation (can't seem to get my hand in my pocket), but I've tried OSMand and prefer Bike Tracker.

  • I am using turn by turn using KOMOOT. I like strava for route design as it gives me Heat Maps..

    1) Create Route in Strava

    2) Export GPX file

    3) Import file in KOMOOT.

    4) Use KOMOOT app for turn by turn direction & Keep strava open for Mertrics..

    5) Better way, buy Wahoo elemnt, send KOMOOT map to Elemnt. You will have turn by turn direction & also all your Metrics...

  • Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your useful posts regarding Audio Turn-by-Turn not available on Strava mobile app.

No, Google Map does not offer to upload GPX files anymore either.

I got stocked too after creating routes on Strava desktop, so I searched and found an option that works:

    1) Create your route on Strava desktop or any other app you can create and export routes in GPX file format.

    2) Export the GPX file of the created route on the cloud (i.e. Google Drive, etc.)

    3) Download and install the free app Kromoot (iOS and Android - www.komoot.com) on your phone

    4) Open your web browser on your mobile phone or on your desktop and go to: http://www.komoot.com/upload/ (Kromoot support page: http://help.komoot.de/knowledgebase/articles/486300-gpx-export-and-upload)

    5) Log in to Kromoot and follow instructions to import your GPX file: http://help.komoot.de/knowledgebase/articles/486300-gpx-export-and-upload

    6) Select the GPX file saved on the cloud (i.e. Google Drive, etc.)

    7) Open Kromoot mobile app, and got to Profile. Your route should be below "Tours" "Planned X" (X for number of routes/files uploaded)

    8) To start the route navigation, Click on "Planned X", Select the route you would like to ride, run or hike, and Click on "Start Navigation".

It will give you clear Audio Turn-by-Turn with Turn Left/Right with Street/Road Names and number of Miles/Km to follow that Street/Road.

If you have time, please check your created route directly on Kromoot desktop app, because there might be few bugs due to the GPX file upload. I had only one minor detour of few meters on my 120Km route, so I can say it works!

Used Kromoot mobile app in my pocket with headphones on, and felt I had a personal coach giving me directions.

    I loved it!

Check it out, it is free!

    Thank you all,

    Sebastien

  • This is a feature that has been asked for for at least six years and is readily available in God knows how many other apps.  How is it not a priority?

  • I have this free by exporting GPX from a route mapped in Strava to OsmAnd mapping app.

  • This is a MUST! would mean your app rivals Garmin Edge range... at last we have a satnav solution for bikes to be run on the mobile devices we all already own... no need to spend £400 on a new Edge 1000!
