Do not allow Tacx, Zwift or other trainer rides to register on a segment

It is plainly stupid that an indoor ride can score a KoM on a real road segment-surely there is a way of only allowing outdoor rides to achieve a segment time???

Thanks Paul - we now have an activity type "Virtual Ride" with it's own segment leaderboards. An activity tagged as a virtual ride will not appear on cycling segments.

  • @ Elle, But KOMs made in the past with a virtual ride, will remain listed in the segment lists?
Probably my way of explaining things is not the best, that's why I will show you what I mean. On this segment https://www.strava.com/segments/10433437?oq=bos, the KOM-leader achieved his record using a TACX-training.

    Thanks for your help,
    Victor

  • So basically for those who live in cold weather states, during the winter when we cycle using "Virtual Rides" ,our cycling would be null and void in our various groups?

  • I agree, most segments I can kill-it during the winter on simply because a few of them have a headwind almost no matter what unless I spin in the middle of the night, perfect conditions and a hint of luck. Although showing segments that are VKOM or VQOM might be a nice option. At the same time, I do NOT think anything but a true smart trainer should could unless the numbers coincide with the athletes real-world numbers. Smart Trainers (Tacx Neo and Wahoo) seem to be the most accurate and reliable (though you can cheat with weight). I tend to see MANY more of the 'flyers' on virtual sites, not just Zwift, that are 9/10 times on Zpower or Power Meters. Sure it may be a 'ooops I set up wrong' issue and yes, they are only cheating themselves but what does it do for others than will never have a chance at these VKOM or VQOM no matter how hard they push!?! Huge debate I know, I know..... I will leave it at that - sure you get the idea.

  • I live in a northern state - Canada - I ride all winter, and it's not easy to say the least. For a while there Strava made it interesting because I was motivated by looking at what other elites were doing on the same days in the city - until everyone started riding their trainers on Zwift. Now I typically end up at the bottom of the pile in terms of distance/speed/ascent, even though I'm riding in 4D with real wind, snow, sluch traffic etc and working my butt off in -30 with 50km/hr headwinds.  So no motivation from starva at all, I don't even check it once the snow flies.  No premium membership for me thanks no thanks.  Why Zwift rides end up on a leaderboard with real rides is messed up. What's next, TDF stages on Zwift? IT'S NOT REAL!!!  Guys that avg 30 km/hr in the real world avg 35 km/hr and up on zwift.  The leaderboards and challenges become a mockery. Strava is being taken over by zwift, so I'm looking for the next app that has a virtual leaderboard for cowards and pussys and a real leaderboard for real riders riding in the real world. Should be an entirely different database.

  • I agree, Zwift makes a mockery of the KOM.

Just look for yourself at the London Boxhill KOM, this was used in the Olympic 2012 road race, the first 30+ pages are ALL now Zwift rides.

And how accurate are the 'power curves' of the supported turbo trainers on Zwift?  Just because a manufacturer claims 30km/h is equal to 250w does not mean it is true, I can guarantee they do not calibrate every TT before it leaves the factory.

In the same way people cheat on Strava (moped, cars) now Zwift will ruin the KOM on Strava completely!

  • I like the earlier suggestion of VPR, VKOM, etc- take the regular road segments and separate them for Virtual Trainers.  When I transfer the results from local GPS routes from my Tacx Neo Smart trainer to Strava, all segment information is absent.  Strava knows it's a Virtual Ride.  I re-ride numerous local GPS routes on my trainer and would like the segment data - just like I like it from the real road results.  I totally understand that  some Trainers may not track close enough to simply mix road and VR segments.  I simply support the notion of transferring existing road segments for Virtual and just separate them with a "V" prefix.

  • No forced "virtual" distinction on leader boards for total weekly distance, elevation and the like is just as bad as mixing virtual data in segment KOM/QOM.  Come on guys! Just controlling for environment alone is a hugh advantage at total weekly numbers. And advantages abound! Wana go as fast as you can all the time? No problem. You can do it with no reservation because there are no cars, no dogs, no pot holes, no lights, no flat tires, no friends with flat tires. Gotta bring weight adding water, food, clothes, tubes etc? Sucks to be you. Wanna live at the top of your clubs weekly leader boards? Easy, Just get a trainer, cuz even after sooo much time, STRAVA doesn't seem to care. These virtual tools do have their place, but it is not mixed in with the real thing. Please fix this now!

  • Don't listen to Steve U. He is virtual to. This guy needs to plug in to the matrix, then he can ride a bike without owning one.

  • Sad to see riders posting their Zwift fake elevation gains to mine all winter long here in Oregon, especially since I’m on a mountain bike on trails. Climbing on a trainer? WTF!!! there is no such thing. Even gravel grinding in horizontal rain is way more challenging than smashing it in your living room. I look forward to a new gps AP for real world riders who actually ride because they love it rain, wind or snow.

  • I use STRAVA both outdoors and indoors f(Tacx Neo Smart) for Winter Trainer rides against GPS routes when below 0 or ice.  I like it.  I support being able to tally indoor and outdoor separately and perhaps have a prefix of "v" or something for segment times/KOM that are done on a trainer.  Different trainers clearly vary on realistic loads against GPS courses.  And of course, they will never have a tail wind.  I do consider the indoor rides legitimate against my annual mileage.  I encourage STRAVA auto-identifying the segments as outdoor or indoor to satisfy both user groups.
