Show heart rate data on swim activities

Currently the swim data from the HRM-Swim doesn't display. It would be good to get it on there for suffer score etc.

  • Just adding my 2 cents worth.......

Dear Strava. Please support Garmin HR Swim data, Swim Race types and Triathlon.

  • Any update on swim HR data being assigned a suffering score and included in the Fitness and Freshness graph? I signed up for the premium version for this and disappointed not to see my swims included being a triathlete. I use the Garmin 920xt swim and Tri HR monitors. That

  • I am athlete and app developer. I use my own app to record my sessions using both gps heart rate ble monitors. My app creates the TCX file and then upload it to garmin, mapmyrun, runtastic, endomondo and strava.

When the workout type is swim, only at strava the heart rate isn't shown. All others apps show hr data correctly.

So, I just changed the activity sport type from swim to workout and the HR data was shown.

There is no tecnical reason to strava doesnt shown the hr data....they just doesnt want to.

So....the workaround is to change the sport type to workout and u wil see all hr info.

BTW, my app is available for free at android play store ( imax hr monitor )

  • Surely this is an easy fix Strava? Nearly two and a half years of complaints. Very disappointing.

  • Another premium user that won't be renewing because of this issue. Its a disgrace that this has been happening for three years already without a fix.

TrainingPeaks it is for me from now on.

  • @Tim - Thanks for finally explaining why this is a problem for Strava.  I didn't realize the HR data was appended to the end of the file and a newer Ant+ version was used along with FITSDK.  Makes sense now.

@Jess - The dev team should be able to address this in one "sprint".  Alternatively don't recommend purchasing a HRM when looking at the "Hear Rate" section of a swim activity. At a minimum you should list what HRMs are supported.

  • I have cancelled my premium tariff today in protest. This is very poor and from these updates, a much needed feature.

  • one eternity later... still no update...

I only see the avg rate in the android app. When I tap on it - it says I should get a HR monitor to see the data. No HR data on the online version..

  • I suggest everyone flood any Strava social media feed (not offensive or spam) and ask when will they address the issue. Tell the world they are telling you to buy something that is basically a scam.

, come on.. can you please provide some insight here.. I'm also one of the many users who bought into your marketing of purchasing a HRM for swimming purposes, yet you don't support the data.. ?!"

  • You guys might want to point the finger at Garmin here. HRM data is syncing from my Suunto Ambit3 Peak, which seems to indicate that Strava's API has support for it.

  • Yes please - the data shows up nicely on Garmin Connect.  It would also be great for the swim HR data to go towards calculating the fitness and freshness scores too!

  • This should be an easy feature to implement. And it is crucial one for triathlets now that we have the rather usefull Fitness and Freshness graphs. Please implement it.

  • My interpretation is that Strava chooses not to put resources towards the problem.

Run - you can manually designate its "Workout Type" as "Run", "Race", "Long Run", "Workout"

Bike - you can manually designate its "Workout Type" as "Ride", "Race", "Workout"

Swim is just a swim to Strava and there is not even a "Workout Type" designation field. Note being able to designate swims as Race or Workout or Swim is all on Strava.

In addition to all that, Strava doesn't recognize triathlons as one entire event like Garmin Connect and treats transitions as some funky activity (Morning Activity, Lunch Activity, etc) which only lasts 20s, WTF?!?

My guess is that Strava definitely doesn't have any Masters Swimmers on staff and if they have any triathletes on staff, then they have a very WEAK voice within the company.

On a related note, Training Peaks receives heart rate for open water swims; but, not pool swims. So, I believe the info is there.

  • I'm using the Garmin 935 with the swim try strap and the activity has HR data in the Garmin app. However HR data is not show in the Strava mobile app or here online. The mobile app just tells me to shop for a heart rate monitor, but I'm already wearing one!

  • This seems strange why a simple feature request is being ignored. Have they burned through there startup funding and started to loose the customer base? There seems very little development going on for such young company. Can I suggest everyone reading this puts in another request for this feature. Maybe a big surge of requests will be the motivation they need to do something even if its just announce a statement of intent regarding this feature.

  • I swim twice a week with Garmin 735xt and HRM-Swim. Every upload to Strava omits the HR data and annoyingly recommends I get a HR strap! The last couple of times I have been slightly more hopeful because of your posts Robert but I think Christina is right about it being a problem with Strava’s software accepting Garmin data. I’ve had a few emails direct from Strava about it saying that they are working on it and they’re only a small team but I still think they should have sorted this out two years ago.
