Show heart rate data on swim activities

Currently the swim data from the HRM-Swim doesn't display. It would be good to get it on there for suffer score etc.

  • It's unfortunate that even though Strava markets themselves as a company that's all about supporting Triathletes, they are more interested in rolling out social media features than actually supporting us. No HR on swim data and now way to group Tri actitivies, for example. "The social network for athletes" is just turning into "A social network with some athletes". :\

  • I didn't prolong my premium subscription either. Sad.

  • I also did not renew my subscription to Strava and now use Training Peaks as my "go to" training app.

It was partially because of the lack of HR data for swimming but mostly because Strava is more of a community / social training tool than a serious performance analysis tool. I still use Strava to see what my friends are up to, learn new cycling routes, etc. For this, I think Strava is very good. When it comes to more serious training scheduling and performance analysis, there are many other much better tools on the market, such as Training Peaks.

Note however, not even Training Peaks is able to automatically import your Garmin swims into Training Peaks.

    See this page: https://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/115006148488-Can-I-see-swimming-heart-rate-data-recorded-by-my-Garmin-HRM-Swim-or-HRM-Tri-

  • As per this comment:

"Strava does accept heart rate data from most Garmin swim uploads, but the data is only displayed in the graph on the mobile app, not yet on the website. And there is no suffer score calculation."

This seems not to show in the app as suggested. Used my Garmin HRM Swim with Garmin 735xt, worked great and HR data is visible in Garmin Connect, however, it does not show when the activity is synced in Strava.

  • If "most Garmin swim uploads" is meant to refer to "Garmin open water swim uploads," then maybe.  Strava did show average heart rate data (and only average heart rate) for my one recently completed open water swim, but none for any pools swims.

  • Fed up with waiting for Strava to add the swim heart rate. Triathlon is a growing sport and Strava obivouy doesn't care about it otherwise surely we would have it by now. The patronising heart rate page going me to add a HRM when I've already gone through the embarrassment of wearing it at the pool already. I won't be renewing my premium as Training Leaks is doing it for me.

  • This, and the fact that their data analysis is now inferior to Garmin's, has led me to cancel my premium membership. Seems too much effort is being spent developing 'fluffy' features rather than things athletes would find useful.

  • Travis -

I spoke to Strava support about this and that was the workaround we used, but we also had an issue with it — when the TCX file was uploaded the HR data was there, but the distance was cropped slightly. They’re still working on getting heart rate from the FIT file.

  • For those using the TCX upload workaround: Does this work with pool sessions or are we talking open water for the workaround?

  • The TCX upload workaround also works with pool sessions, but why the h... can't Strava fix this issue?

  • Christian - it works for pool swims, but crops the distance (not sure why) and calculates pace for the entire workout duration, not just for moving time.

  • TCX 'workaround' doesn't work. Did a pool swim this week, my FR935 auto-uploaded it to strava.

Deleted it from strava, tried to import the TCX file - got an error saying the activity already existed, despite having been deleted and no longer showing in my history.

    Observations:

    1. Deleting an activity still retains an record in the d/b somewhere. Caching issue at d/b level?

    2. The workaround may work only if you prevent the activity being created in the first instance. In my case, turn off wifi upload solely for one activity type?

    3. Strava appears to be a platform built for runners and cyclists, but doesn't want to cater for triathletes.

Great work guys, that's my subscription cancelled. Moving back to Garmin Connect for activity review, the social side may not be as well developed but the GCM app makes Strava look amateur at best.

  • I have a 735XT and just had a go at the workaround, it kind of works....
I found that you have to rename and save the original file before deleting it from Strava (eg call it afternoon swim.1 ) that way you do not get the annoying problem of Strava saying the file already exists when you go to reload the .TCX from Garmin.

The relative effort and heart rate worked, although the rest of the analysis it’s still very clunky.
The distance was reduced by 25m and the pace was slower.

Pretty poor that Strava admin has not sorted this yet, or at least properly explained the issue, especially since this is meant to be a feature included in premium.

  • Ya. I will never purchase premium again unless they fix this. I don't believe it is Garmin as Strava will import my bike and run heart rate data. Just something stupid

  • Just purchased a Garmin Swim HRM. Works great. Data was available on Garmin Connect as expected. Went to Strava and didn't see my HR data. Very disappointed. Then I found this thread!! I cant believe this has been so difficult for Strava to fix. Very disappointing. Come on Strava. You must be able to fix this quickly. No kudos for you.

  • It is BS that it shows in the app ... see attached app screenshot and Garmin Connect HR graph for comparison.

  • I hope so, but I have my doubts: If you happen to understand German, this is a very eyeopening interview with Strava's community manager for Germany: http://fatboysrun.de/fatboysrun-episode-127-paul-niemeyer-von-strava/

    Key takeaways for me:
    - Strava sees itself as a social platform, not a TrainingPeaks competitor.
    - Strava sees great value in the user generated gpx files and hopes that they can find ways to monetize these without alienating its users

Since analytics isn't a top priority and pool swims won't produce gpx tracks I don't have high hopes (but keep my fingers crossed).

  • Thanks Ossian - This workaround works !

And have updated my past months data successfully.  HOWEVER...

...I'm still waiting for a Strava fix before I go back to any premium/summit subscriptions.

As has been identified before, it only requires a technical fix due to the way that the HRM data is added to the original file after the live event - this is because the watch and the HRM band do not synchonise in real time underwater during the swim.

Thanks again, but still looking forward to a solution at source soon

  • I checked the Strava flyby results for the Kona IM on 10/14/2018.  Very few swimmers were able to post heart rate.  It really is quite hard to capture and post to Strava.  One Garmin user managed to upload a relative effort score with her swim, perhaps by using the trick method described elsewhere.  FYI, some Polar V800 users did post good swim heart rate data while others just showed some flat graphs at very high or low heart rates.  However, one swimmer did upload a very accurate heart rate trace along with his fast pace:

Come on, Strava. Please add heart rate and Suffer Score data to Garmin swim activities. I pay for Premium and I’d really like to see all my activities properly displayed.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Equally disappointed to discover this after buying a Garmin HRM-Swim.  Like many others need to reflect on this when my Summit renewal comes up...
