Show heart rate data on swim activities

Currently the swim data from the HRM-Swim doesn't display. It would be good to get it on there for suffer score etc.

  • Jimmy, excellent idea - I've left 2 comments on Facebook this morning... Let's bombard them, especially as they have a blog post about swimming.  If they get poor comments on their public facing sites then it may just spur them into doing something about it...

  • DCR Rainmaker posted a swim yesterday using a Garmin with heart rate data so I asked him about it in the comments section and he was kind enough to reply.

The activity was originally recorded as a run and then relabelled as a swim hence why the hr data came through to Strava. Again he confirmed his understanding of why the issue persists, and perhaps his thoughts depending on how you read emojis.

I asked him to pass on this strand to anyone who might have some influence also.

  • It's really a shame that we still cannot see heart rate data from our Garmin HRM-TRI on Strava.

I will not renew my summit / premium membership because of this.

  • This is so frustrating! I swim with the Garmin HRM Swim and the data shows up in Garmin Connect. Neither Strava nor TrainingPeaks process the information included in the packet. I say we nudge Garmin too.

  • I just got the Coros Apex, it records HR on the wrist thus included in the main set of data, but of course not shown on strava. Yet again the question on why paying for summit when even the most basic stuff isn't working (not to mention the complete lack of tri support)

  • Wow, holy old feature request! I only just got the possibility to record HR while swimming myself, but this stuff have been around for years, and the data in the files synced are not exactly hocus pocus. Come on Strava!

  • Guys, I have a friend who works at Strava. I’ve been pushing him on this and also directed him to this thread to see the demand. They are working on this...it has been confirmed. No updates beyond that nor a timeline, but I was heartened to at least hear they’re actually working on it.

  • Pool Swim - Polar H10 heart rate data uploads to Strava (from Polar Beat via Polar Flow).  Strava on my mobile then displays s simple heart rate graph (HR against minutes) under View Analysis but Strava on the desktop doesn't have the graph or any analysis.

    Is this as expected?

Logged in with Strava Summit on both devices.

  • The only way this will eventually make it onto the Strava dev roadmap is if we keep asking for it... so PLEASE figure out a way to support HR with Garmin.  Also figure out how to get lap data to import for segments shorter than 400m b/c that not working is actually insane.

  • Dear Strava,

Skimmed through this thread ... 2 points really strike me:

    Seems like a quick fix.
Still nothing after 3+ years of requests etc.

Surely it would be good for business to incorporate - certainly wouldn't hurt right?

An update/ time frame on this would help - but the fix itself would be awesome please!

  • You do realize an application like GoldenCheetah already implements that, right?
And you've been behind at this for what? 4 years now?

  • Here's something interesting.

As I said before, a program like GoldenCheetah has no problem understanding the *.fit file coming out of Garmin Connect.

What's more interesting is that when I export the swim activity from GoldenCheetah to a *.fit file, you still have problems understanding it (It appears differently than the original automatic export from Garmin Connect)

Strava does accept heart rate data from most Garmin swim uploads, but the data is only displayed in the graph on the mobile app, not yet on the website. And there is no suffer score calculation.

With notable support for this improvement, I think the work can be prioritized to fully support the display of HR for swims and the inclusion in the suffer score calculation.

  • Did my first swim tonight with Polar V800 watch and Polar H7 hrm.  After all that I've read, I was pleasantly surprised to see that heart rate did export to Strava.  Thanks guys.  Also confirmed that a bit more data is provided in the iOS and Android versions than the website.  Also, Polar Flow (Polar's Strava-like site) is quite comprehensive in the swim activity details; at this point, it's much better suited to understanding pace and efficiency and stroke details.

  • Yup, it is working for my first swim with Polar v800.  Still working out the kinks, but thanks Strava for your efforts.

  • Cath,

No special settings other than automatic export from Polar Flow (similar to Garmin Connect) to Strava.  Make sure you have all that working.  Here's more evidence that the HR details are provided along with suffer score.  Users have waited a long time for this:

  • Robert - the issue with with Garmins, not Polar. Garmin stores the HR data in the transmitter itself, and downloaded it to the watch when you save the workout.  Polar records it live as part of the workout itself.  The issue has something to do with the way the downloaded HR data is presented in the .fit file.

  • Christina--I'm fairly certain this is a new feature on Strava. I can't find any activities other than mine that show swim HR, even from other users with same V800 device.

  • I’m not sure why it is so hard to sort swim data. Do you realise that if I use my swim heart rate monitor while running.... Strava transfers the suffer zone data across!! WTF

  • It really is a pity heart rate doesn't show with swim activities.

Why, oh why? This can't be that difficult, can it?

Overall Strava is not really active with adding new functionality.

Garmin Connect seems to be more active. Pity most people are at Strava, but don't be sure things stay that way.

    Just do it!

  • @Adrian: Nope, there is a single FIT file, Strava simply ignores the HR data. Even when uploading a TCX file generated from the HR file.

  • Just picked up a HRM Tri Band and it indeed does not show the HR data on Strava. Seems like an easy feature.
