Videos on Strava

I was just thinking after looking at some photos of a training session of a friend on Strava, how awesome it would be if we could upload short videos of our training sessions. this could be useful to hone our training technique as others could tell you where you are going wrong or you could show others the proper way to train. There could also be the ability to add audio to the video.

We've just removed the planned status of this feature request. Unfortunately, videos on Strava did not get worked on in 2017, and the project is currently not planned. We agree with all of you in that we would love to see videos as a part of the Strava experience someday. Hopefully, we'll be able to prioritize this work soon. Thanks for your patience.

  • I totally agree. Especially as I have seen several examples of videos with an overlay of Strava data. I think it would be the right way to go, being able to upload videos.

  • With the continuing boom in action cams, surely this is a no brainer, even if they only enabled for Premium users.

  • It looks like Strava team has the same sense of time like Valve https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time :)

@Elle Anderson: any update on this?

  • I'd also like to see this. Being able to see your friends ride videos and put your own up is only going to increase the amount of time we spend in Strava. I'm all for adding more social features as I like to keep my strange cycling stuff separate from Facebook, so Strava is the place to share experiences, photo's, vids with other like minded friends and training partners.

  • Any news from the Strava developers on introducing video to the feed?

I would love to see short videos attached to the feed. Just ordered a second action camera so very keen to publish short clips with my Strava data. Been adding YouTube links as a workaround in the meantime.

Also just upgraded to Premium, and I'm loving the extra features.

  • Also looking for this possibility. In Garmin Connect it is possible, but I have more connections on Strava where I would like to put a link to a recording.

    Update?

  • I just got interested in adding video clips too but it seems like it's not coming soon.  I'm thinking of just uploading them to youtube and putting the link in my comments for the ride.

  • Just put your video on youtube and paste a link in your strava comments.

  • We know how to paste a link from Youtube Christopher H. But some of us dont want to put videos on Youtube. My rides are logged on Strava and thats where I would like to log my video along with my ride. I only want my training rides visible to the Strava community. 😊👍

  • @Dave Bradbury.  I understand your desire to keep your cycling videos within Strava, however as I'm sure you know videos use much more data than strava feeds.  It would be necessary to have many additional servers in multiple countries and regions to ensure timely playback of video.  $6 a month probably wouldn't cover that cost and is probably why their is silence from Strava on this.  Without advertising or trackers collecting your data like facebook and Google do to resell to those advertisers, it probably isn't financially feasible to do this and still have an affordable Strava.  BTW, you can always make your youtube uploads private or unlisted.

  • Why dont you add things that we REALLY need like turn by turn navigation!

  • @ Christopher H. Mayne you're correct in mentioning servers and all the techie stuff but Elle Anderson said, its a maybe. I'm sure they know all the implications that are involved with introducing video at Strava including servers so I think that it will happen sooner or later. Unless of course you know more than they do.

  • Got it.  I thought you were talking about a youtube link I put in my latest ride.  To answer your question, you're correct I don't know first hand what's happening within Strava, nor am I on a name basis with anyone there.  However I do know a little bit about IT and servers and I have experience working within an organization, so I can only guess that's what's going on.

Since they said it's forthcoming over a year ago, it would look pretty bad to reneg on that citing profit margins as the reason.  Better from a management perspective to let the idea die on the vine.  Personally, I'm ok with them not having video, how much can one expect for $6 a month? You have to pay more to get more.  Would they have to eliminate their free service, a crucial leader towards future premium subscribers, to accomplish video or as another poster mentioned turn by turn nav?  The current set up of Strava is a bargain I'd rather not tamper with, but that's just my opinion.

  • I can see your point Christopher, Strava is a bargain for the monthly cost and many would complain if the cost went up due to video being introduced. And because there has been no update recently, I think you're right, They maybe just letting the idea die on the vine. We'll just have to see what happens.
