Is Deleting a Lap from a Ride Possible?

Yesterday I went to a bike race.  My "ride" for the day consisted of three recorded laps on my Garmin: Lap 1, warm up; Lap 2 the race; Lap 3 cool down.

I don't want to include any of the data from Lap 1 or 3 in my ride analysis.  While I can look at some data when looking at lap data, I am unable to really drill down and look at all of the info per lap.

Can I delete Laps 1 &3 somehow so the data presented is only Lap 2?

  • I don't think you can delete those laps, nor even isolate just an individual lap (well maybe in the paid Summit version it's possible). In the future, if you don't want to include the warm-up and cool down...don't hit "start" until just before you start the race. -- Dan

  • YES it is possible.   In Garmin, first do an export of the activity .FIT file so that you have a backup.  You will need it during the process, on website you click the GearWheel icon for settings (upper right) in the activity and select 'Export Original'

    Next in the activity select 'Trim Activity' from the GearWheel icon for settings and select Trim towards the bottom.  In there you can select the time at the start and end of activity to trim.    This will result in just the race portion being left.

    Now import the backup file from the main Garmin connect dashboard upper right (Cloud with Arrow).  This will re-import the whole activity... repeat the process for cropping to remove all but the cooldown.

    IF... this process gives you errors "Activity already exists" it is due to time stamp duplicate.... import your backup into www.fitfiletools.com and you can change the time, and/or also you can do the cropping of activity in there and re-export a new .FIT file for each section of activity.   Delete all of garmin stuff for that day... then re-import all three seperate actvities.   You can then also re-import all the activities manually into Strava

  • A much easier way than what Nick described is just to record it as three activities.  Save the file after the warm up and before the race starts, start a new file for the race, then save that after the race finishes, then just start a new file for the cool down.  That way, you get all your stats from each portion of activity separated.

  • Download the GPX file and there should be

    <lap>

    ... stuff

    </lap>

    or something like that. Since you have 3 laps, there will be 3 of these. Delete everything in the first and 3rd lap portions and reupload just the middle lap.
