  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

  • Option not to follow bicycle paths

    Varun 🥐 P.

For few weeks while creating routes I have problem with Strava's routing algorithm. It tries to follow bicycle lanes as much as possible and that is a problem, since OpenStreetMap data in place where I live are not complete. This results in all kind of crazy route suggestions, like one in attached pictures. Is it possible to add option which will give user a choice not to follow bicycle paths when creating route?

I am OpenStreetMap contributor, but I can't solve mapping mistakes or add missing data for whole country.

  • Yes! This is the very least functionality that Routes must have. Ideally audio turn-by-turn navigation also, but without auto directional map orientation Routes is useless on a smartphone.

  • The update to Route creation this week is a mess and must be rolled back. It has blocked many popular fire road access paths from being used on Ride routes. Bikes are explicitly allowed by signage on the one I post here (see the gap its is routing around). Meanwhile, the routing is now sending us up a 30% grade singletrack (see number 4) alongside the main fire road, which nobody has ever ridden up in history and in fact doesn't even exist (it was bulldozed 4 months ago).  The use most popular setting is ON, but doesn't seem to be used.

  • Features request: On my computer's web browser, when I look at My Activities, I see a list that I can sort by Date, Title, Time, Distance or Elevation. I can also search my Activities by a keyword from the Activity Title. However, when I look at My Routes, I get none of this, just an unfriendly grid. Please make it possible to list and search Routes in as user friendly of a way as is possible with Activities. Furthermore, when I click on a Route, it opens up to a teeny tiny viewing window, which cannot be made larger and cannot be made full screen. It's very frustrating to try to preview a route when the view is so small. Please make it possible to view a Route in full screen.

  • I would really like to see an improved map design (or option to toggle openstreetmap) where it is possible to see surface type for every road. This was possible a few years ago when strava still used OpenStreetMap but since the maps have been updated every road is just a white line and very small paths are dotted white lines. A lot of us live in places where there are lots of gravel and asphalt roads scattered around and crossing each other, now there is no way to actually see the surface type before clicking to route there. This makes planning a route a lot more time consuming because you have to find the right route by trial and error.

  • I have one more comment to add to this comment in addition to my support for the items requested here - I am frustrated at having >161 routes with many duplicates due to the difficulty searching for my previous routes.   I would also like to add search by places on a map previously visited (using name or click on the map to search). The new competitors do not suffer from this problem.

  • Is it possible to give us ability to choose the opacity of the global heatmap while creating our own routes? The latest update of the routing feature which added POIs also reduced the opacity so the heatmap became practicaly useless for low traffic trails. Combine this with the fact that timeframe for the global heatmap is reduced from two to one year, this really killed the best value that Strava routing had.

  • I wanted to know if it's possible or if it will be possible to include Point of Interest in our Route when we're planning it, and to have a notification when we pass near the Point of Interest we selected ? For example if we choose a fountain, could the app send a notification (sound, vibration) when we heading toward it so we could know when we are close to it ? Thanks!

  • It would be nice to have some sort of queue for directions, a verbal queue would be preferable. This would be great for trying out a new route, we can follow the route without having to stop and look at the phone to check where we are at on the route. Also, a sync to a watch with a tap would work as well. Anything to let us know a turn is coming up and when to turn. Otherwise, it's a constant checking of the phone or memorizing the route beforehand.

Stanislav, I'm pretty sure that is an issue with OpenStreetMap information, I checked, and it seems like someone changed some of the lines to oneway about 9 months ago.

  • Two years ago I asked for implementing ferrys in creating routes. Still not implemented. Other programs like Kommoot etc. can do it. But Stava is incapable. Shame!

Stanislav, on OpenStreetMap, I believe tagging the trails with "oneway:bicycle=yes" & "oneway:foot=no", and removing the general "one way" tag, would fix this. However, this would not be visible on strava until they update their OpenStreetMap 'basemap' again, something I believe should happen more frequently.

  • Can we have two features

    1. When editing a route to be able to select part of it and delete this part without affecting the existing parts. I realise this may create a gap in the route and I would like to be able to manually fill in the missing section

    2. get manual mode to work properly so I can get a route to go along a road or track that the map data does not recognise. Currently, this is not a reliable feature and when moving a waypoint large parts of the existing route are changed I can not get the mapping to fo along a track that I want even when I am in manual mode.

    Thanks

  • How do you turn off your location on routes?

I inadvertently agreed to routes to show my location and now can't run it off!

It's not accurate, loads last (and so re-centres my routing when I've started), and puts an annoying gigantic blue circle on the map. It's great that it's an option for people that want it, but how the heck do you make it go away?

So: I figured it out and went to my browser setting and disabled strava from the list of websites that know my location, which has worked. It would (potentially) be useful top be able to toggle this on and off on the routes page...?

  • Tarek Koudmani Stanislav C. Dan Tsai we just recently (in February) updated our Global Basemap from fresh OpenStreetMap data, which hopefully incorporated the changes you all have added. Please let me know if you see otherwise!

  • When walking a route it is sometimes difficult to see what direction you go. I would like to have an arrow or something like google maps.

  • Hi Andreas Y. we've created a support ticket to investigate what's happening here. If you could send us some example routes where these problems have occurred, possibly showing the 2 points connected manually, that would be very helpful.

  • David Drake - thanks for posting this! This topic has been posted here many times already (and so many times in the old forum) but I doubt anyone from Strava takes this seriously. Maybe if more people post about things like this often then Strava will finally notice, but I think this is just wishful thinking. I posted earlier about Search functionality, because it seems simpler to implement, but again - wishful thinking ;) It's pathetic of Strava not listening to the users.

  • as of a couple days ago, the New Route page, and Personal Heatmap page start of being centered somewhere in Virginia/Maryland when it loads. I have to either use the "Find My Location" browser geolocation feature (which I don't prefer to use), or manually pan the map all the way back to my home location.

In the past, when the Routes/Heatmap map loaded, it would be centered at my profile's location setting.

  • My route builder feature is painfully slow.  Especially when it comes to editing an existing route, for some reason.  When zooming in and out -- there is a long delay.  It's terrible.  I use Google Chrome, if that matters at all.  Anyone have any solutions, or know how to reach someone at Strava?

  • Dan Tsai this was a geocoding bug from earlier in the week that was just fixed today. Please take a look now and let us know if you still see wonky behavior with the centered-location on various Maps pages.

  • Hi Varun 🥐 P. and team:

I have a few things to report that hopefully you can help with:

    1. Strava routing won't use this path for bike routes:

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/315848935

It worked in the past on Strava bike routes, but recently stopped working (run routing works). In OSM it is marked as Bicycle-accessible. I marked it explicitly as Bike=yes a month ago, but still not working on Strava.

    2. I changed this road's surface type to Asphalt 4 months ago, along with many other local roads. The other roads now correctly show as "Paved" in Strava, but this one still shows as Unknown for some reason.

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/510359015#map=17/37.95826/-122.09991

    3. Images on the "About Strava Maps" HC article are broken:

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216917717-About-Strava-Maps

    4. At the bottom of Strava community posts (such as this one), if you're logged out, there's a "Sign in" link. This link is broken and leads to this article: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/360049642391

The only way to Sign in is through the button at the top of the page.

    Thanks!

  • I have been paying €8 a month for a while for strava premium, tbh I am unsure why. Today I made a mistake and did not record my run. So I created a route from when I did the lop previous and I went to add a manual entry and there was no option to select a route. I was surprised, this was standard on Endomondo for many years. I searched around and it's a FAQ and used to be offered on Android.

Do Strava in general respond to frequent requests for functionality?

I must read https://medium.com/runners-life/is-strava-summit-worth-it-50aa04939a7c again before I cancel my subscription.

  • Hey Tom Corcoran we sure do read every single comment and suggestion and they are all passed along to our product teams. As you're aware, we currently don't have the option to turn a route into an activity, however, you can always create a manual activity and enter the distance, time and elevation (on web) data and it will count towards your personal progress, goals, and most challenges. We're committed to continually improving our product and comments such as yours are key in helping us explore ideas that are not part of our product roadmap.

  • 1) When planning a route for road bike, If I choose the option "prefer paved roads", only paved roads should be considered, and "not specified" roads not. At the moment route planning for new places is very often sends me to dirt roads.

    2) when running a route, it would be very-very useful to see the elevation profile of the route, and also my position. See picture attached.

  • Hi, segments are a great way to motivate users, and it is a great community function. A few things to make them even more useful:

    1) when a segment comes up, it would be nice to have the option to decline that segment. At the moment, the only way to make a segment I dont like not come up, is to complete it, and make it hidden in strava.com. Sometimes, a segment is very long, and I follow a different way, and there is a good segment, which I want to see, but I can not, because the other long segment is already started and I can not make it disappear from my screen.

    2) When I am on a segment, I only see a bar showing my progress. There is no info about the distance left, or at least a percentage counter. For longer segments, it is hardly possible to guess the distance to run until the end. Also, total distance, and elevation profile would be nice to see throuout the segment, and not just only in the beginning of it.

  • Access local routes isn't working.

I can no longer access my local routes. For example, https://www.strava.com/local/us/sf-peninsula/cycling routes me to https://blog.strava.com/routes/ which has not path back to the old views of routes. This is driving me nuts as there were many routes there that I wanted to try!
