Routes

This is the post for all feedback and feature requests related to Routes.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • AJ Christensen Thanks for the feedback! Local has been deprecated in favor of our new Routes functionality. Subscribed athletes will be able to find their next Route for Rides, Runs, and additional sport types that will be available soon. Athletes can discover new routes throughout the globe using popular Points of Interest, custom Start Points, and other curated recommendations based on the criteria that is applied on the Routes page of the Maps tab. You can learn more about our Routes on our support article found here. As we introduce the new features and functionalities for our athletes, we are taking in feedback from our community, and we are going to keep evolving how we surface the right set of data in the future.

  • I've searched far and wide for this and I'm sure I missed it somewhere; is it not possible to search for routes from desktop/web?  Was on the phone with a friend trying to find a route we planned on riding but couldn't find the option to search for routes, just create one from scratch.

  • Feature request: discover routes of followed athletes

Improving on this, having a filter toggle for discover routes to include "followed athletes" (on/off) and time (last month, last 6m, last year, all time).

Why is this important to me? I ride road and XCM and my way of finding new routes is by finding the fast, regular riders from segment KOM's, then following them and replicating their routes. I've found the mobile map route planner to be far off being a reasonable route (eg. it routes through a dangerous area, or high traffic area, or a private property) and feel an improvement to route planning is needed.

In addition, after replicating followed athlete routes, I often need to laboriously change the route start point -- I wish (!!!) there were a way to move a start point and retain the route (eg. for a loop, change start point from 6 oclock to 12 oclock, but retain a clockwise loop). Thanks.

  • Igor Martić thanks for reaching out. The route builder won't necessarily snap to the heatmap or segments, but they can be toggled to be visible while creating one.

If you are unable to route on a road or trail automatically, you have a couple of different ways to help resolve the issue:

    1. Try using manual mode
Enable Manual mode to add a waypoint anywhere on the map. There are a few things to be aware of when using this mode:

    • Manual mode will no longer ensure your route's path follows roads or trails.
    • Popularity and elevation selectors will be disabled.
    • Distance and elevation can only be roughly estimated for manual edits.

    2. Help Improve Strava's Maps
Strava utilizes OpenStreetMap, an open-source project of geographical data for the entire world, alongside our own heat/popularity and other unique data, to help inform routing decisions. If you are experiencing a routing error, you can help the Strava community by contributing the edit to OpenStreetMap.
Feel free to visit our KB article for instructions for more information.

  • Doesn't creating a route on the website creator give you the option to choose "Follow most popular" or "Follow most direct"?  Wouldn't most popular be based on heat maps?  I don't see this option in the iOS app though.

  • How can I show a route that I have created in Strava's route creator in full screen mode after I have saved it and then opened it up on my PC

  • Click on “Edit” just above the small map Greg McCarthy.

  • Tony I’m actually doing the opposite, creating the route in Komoot, using it for navigation while riding, and just using Strava for recording the ride. I’m not going to pay a subscription to create routes in Strava when I’d just export them to another app for navigation. The Komoot route creator is good enough so I use that.

But yeah, crazy that Strava hasn’t had what feels like a core feature for such a long time.

  • Hey, Strava, 3D maps suck! How can I change my default map to Support Ukraine?

  • Wouldn’t it be a great feature for Strava to automatically adjust parts of routes that have not been recorded due to poor GPS? Most of us use ways for our routes that are NOT cross-country. Instead they are shown on all maps. And these maps are also used by Strava, aren’t they? So it would be cool, if Strava adjusted the „missing parts of a route“ to the routes as shown in the map. In my mind this would be a „killer feature“ for Strava – and it would be very helpful in order to get more accurate running times and in order to record the exact length of a run.

  • Why can't I search for a route on Strava any more? Folks are still dumb enough not to use ridewithgps to create routes and I'm having a hell a time finding specific routes.

  • Feature Request: Ability to add control points to routes. Currently there is no way to add control points except as the end of the route. If you want to dial in a section there are often not enough existing control points to do so.

  • Why oh why will you not allow users to allocate a new / existing route to a run? For example, when you stop your watch to take a photo and then forget to restart it, so you need to correct the route on your activity. What do you think we are going to do? There's nothing fraudulent about wanting your stats to reflect reality and if you are fiddling your route, it's only yourself that you're cheating.

I get fed up of creating a route, just so I can then only create a manual activity and then copy/paste the distance and approximate time to it. Why can't I just add the route, if I know I ran it?

  • As a treadmill user, my suggestion is including Zwift running route to “local legend”. Since Strava already got the route records when runners finished. It is not hard to conclude the local legend. It should encourage treadmill users to accumulate their favor route.

  • Well, this post has now been left pending (so effectively deleted) twice. Here goes attempt #3.

Even to my white/male/cis eyes, the Routes Heatmap stands out as a particularly glaring perpetuation of systemic racism. The Routes Heatmap codifies the routes run or biked by past and current members as the primary places worth going. Looking at a map of my home city, Boston, what I see is a glaring absence of running or cycling routes in communities of color (see image below). If I lived in much of Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester, or East Somerville, the Routes Heatmap map would clearly signal to me that I was not welcome in the Strava athlete community. It also signals to those of us who live elsewhere that those communities are not places worth going.

One way to begin to address the problem could be to normalize the heatmap by local user density. If Strava has relatively fewer users in a given neighborhood, but they all choose a certain route, this route should show up prominently. This is already done when you zoom in, but at a city scale, biases in the user base stand out prominently and could turn away potential users.

Background on previous attempts to post this message: In early June, I got Strava's "We must do better, and we will" email about racism and found it to ring rather hollow. I attempted to post this message to the discussion board but it was never published. After the "Strava Metro" email recently which suggests that Strava data will be used by urban planners to make decisions about developing bike lanes, paths, etc -- it seems just as pressing to draw attention to the systemic racism embedded in Strava's data. So I tried to post this again and it was left pending, then the forum shift deleted all existing posts :/
