Better support for Nordic Skiing

It is just ridiculous beyond belief the way Strava doesn't recognize km's for Nordic Skiing in profile stats and the like. Also there is no way to search for Nordic Skiing segments.

Hi Johan, Do you mean the distance for nordic skiing is not included in your weekly totals?

We appreciate the feedback and it is our goal in 2017 to better support all activity types. At this moment, we only support our core activity types of swimming/cycling/running.

  • Things like Kilometres are not really comparable between the different sports. I get that. But just not counting them at all isn't sensible, too.

What about on a better focus on 'time' = minutes. It would be so much more fun within the groups and challanges to have them counted better. You can compare to you friends and family way better this was. No matter if you are into running, soccer, skiing or tabletennis. You're being active. That's what really counts.

In a second step you could allocate points for every kind of sport. So 60 min of running = 600pt; 60 min of golf = 300 pt. Something like that.

  • Yeah started nordic skiing this winter and have been putting in quite a bit of time (and mileage).  But it doesn't show in training log, my goals etc..  It seems one can choose cycling, running, and/or swimming but nothing else.  I decided to set my annual goals with time instead of distance and would love to see how nordic skiing has contributed.  Cheers

  • Yes, I'd like to see nordic (or cross country) in my training log beyond just "XT".  How much did I ski the past week, or in the current or past year?  Number of skis and total distance.  Separate skate from classic skiing, but even if they aren't separated, it's useful to know how much I skied this week/year.

Also, in a run, you have mile splits automatically generated and placed adjacent to the map of the route.  Please add this to nordic!  It's hard to tell what's going on from just a little graph of pace.  Mile or km splits please!

  • It seems to me it might not be that difficult to be able to choose your core activities somewhere in your profile so that not only could you track them but you wouldn't have to scroll through the 20 odd activity types whenever you add one.

Great to here 'other' sports other than the core sports are going to be further supported.

I struggle to see how swimming falls into a core sport as it is one of the hardest sports to actually upload data for. Very few HR monitors work in water. GPS doesn't work inside. Lap timing watches are not really that common, and some can't sync to Strava.

Being able to switch swimming off and turn another sport on would make a lot of sense. So you can choose which 3 sports you track (maybe people who regularly do 4 sports will moan at this).

Will be great to see how support for 'other' sports evolve over the year.

  • It would be great to include nordic skiing at some level, as our entire off-season is filled with nordic skiing.

  • Revisiting this because i think it's important.  it's good that you are giving more attention to Non-core sports (why again is swimming core?  very good points made above, my guess is only because it is part of Tri)

I've noticed a lot more sport options when uploading which is great,  but still "segment explore" and "segment search"  only list run/bike,  what if i want to search for a nordic segment?  or find a place to kayak? Similarly training log should show all activities,  or at least the ones i want it to show.  same with clubs, ie our back country ski club only measures runs...whats the point of having a club then?

I think each sport should have a discussion page and ambassador to see what people really want ,  not major overhauls, but tweaks to what data we see.  backcountry skiers want VAM for the ascents, more focus on elevation data ,  i bet nordic would want Classic vs Skate , and etc etc for every type of sport.  Ask Tim Johnson for some feedback on Skimo/backcountry.

I know run/bike are your bread and butter,  but the sign-in page says "connecting athletes" and athletes do a lot more than just run and bike.

  • Strava, in Europe xski is one of the most popular sport in winter. Like a cycling in summer. I dont mention Russia here... you got my point.

  • Hi Strava support,

I totally agree with guys here. Please, do something with customization of Strava. I also have Suunto watches and their app is perfect. You can fully customize which sports do you prefer and then you can follow your challenges, see progress, mileage, time in sport who you are interested for.

I do prefer cycling, nordic skiing. Running and especially swimming is totally useless for me and I think this would be greatest update for this application.

  • Strava, check quantity of XC ski races accross the Europe and its attendance! Definitely the one to watch and concentrate on. Tens of thousands athletes are competing in this sport in Europe alone.

Its rather strange to discover segments only after activity is uploaded. Adding a filter in seach/explore will be a quick win since you already have the data and segments created with XC Ski tag.

    thanks

  • Hello from Alaska—nordic skiing is my main sport for 6 months of the year; everything else I would use Strava for is just cross training for skiing.

Your brand is based on a Swedish word... c'mon please make skiing as important as the 3 triathlon sports.

At strava: skiing is an expensive sport for which people spend a lot of money. There is a huge gap in purpose built tracking apps for this sport: I tried them all and I ended up going back to strava despite its many shortcomings. So in my view Strava should be motivated to assign some development bandwidth to better supporting it - I am sure users would be interested in paying a premium fee if it came with rich features.

Some other things that are missing:
    - segments recognition is far from optimal, probably because it’s optimized to cycling where the lateral tolerance is the same as the width of a road lane/trail path. For ski segments it would be nice to tailor the algo to use different parameters
    - max speed per descent should be easily reported
    - option to auto remove the time and mileage spend on lifts (farming gps do this before uploading but phone apps and apple watches don’t)
    - resort sponsored challenges

Come on these are not rocket science and there is a vast population of users whose needs are not met - sounds like a no brainer to me!

  • Just noticed also the "analysis" section is not available for Nordic Skiing - ie if I want to see my my HR distribution for example, I need to switch the mode to Running to see it. Can't see a reason why I would have to see this trouble. Strava, please - we are paying customers - and You could do so much more!

  • Strava is really discounting the fitness and #optOUTSIDE lifestyle benefits by NOT considering nordic/cross country skiing as one of its core activities per above official response.  If anything, it is more of a GPS ready and necessary  activity than, for example, swimming. Strava is alienating and the number of 'lifetime athletes' (as nordic skiesr tend to be).  That is a poor business decision. Tracking IS necessary in remote, solitary fitness activities. Next to cycling and running, nordic skiing, is that by definition. How many regular open water swimmers are their in comparison if you want to use that criteria; by far, most are in a pool (gps necessary that isn't!).  Please add another front page tab where one can choose their OWN activity or in the least, allow for customized metrics for nordic skiing in summary pages. Thank you.

  • Strava please consider adding time, distance, heart rate, splits, segments to Nordic Skiing.  It is such a huge segment of my winter training in the upper midwest.  We have great conditions in the winter for this sport and we need your support as well.  Hurry and release a new development!  Thank you!!!

  • I agree!  I'm lucky that I don't run so I can just label all of my skiing as running, but it would be nice to have everything labeled properly.  Strava could be such an awesome app but as it is, it is mediocre at best.  Maybe some year it will be good enough to pay for!

  • Strava, it would be good to be able to differentiate classic technique vs skate technique tracks because my speed is so different. It's a bit like different strokes in swimming?

But I also have to say I find it useful and fun to record to Strava every time I ski and I recently upgraded to Summit so I can see more data. What you're doing is already quite useful, but skiers just feel like second class users.

  • Nearly 2019 and still it is silly that Nordic Skiing is not a "core" sport.  All aerobic sports should be core, like duh?  Distance is not as important in time.  This rules out summit for sure -- how can properly training load be calculated when Nordic skiing doesn't count?  Disgraceful really.  I'm recording nordic skiing as running from now on so that I can track weekly aerobic time.  The only problem is my runs are also recorded as runs but at least I'll get a sensible total.

  • was wondering if there's anyway I could put nordic activity in my goals. googled and ended up here. seems like strava isn't really interested in updating that after almost 2 years of suggestions from customers. *sigh*

  • Yup.  Strava sucks.  It could be so good, but it just isn't.  Some simple changes would make it amazing and would make me willing to pay for it but they just don't seem to care.  If there was any other app, I would throw my money at them and switch.

  • Hey folks,

We appreciate your feedback and ideas. There are a lot of valid activity types we can add to Strava. One thing to remember: just because something's popular doesn't mean it'll be implemented. Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While a ton of ideas are genuinely valuable, we need to be selective and balance our priorities.
