Activity Search doesn't find existing activities by keywords

I wanted to get more information about a low key trail running event so I did activity search by a closest city (that is a trail event that starts at a trailhead) and event name. Surprisingly I got back no results even though I know there must be some. To verify I went to my friend profile and found the actual last year event activity record there. From there I looked at segments and found more activities from the same date. Many of these activities had the exact event name but still no much.

I am sure that isn't the problem with location because I was getting pretty far away activities when I searched for a more general keyword.

We've updated many of our search features since this discussion was created, including activity search. At this time, keywords are required for searching activities and entering a location is optional. Searching by location only is not possible at this time.

Get in touch with us directly if you're still not finding the activities you're expecting when using the search.

  • Hi Stanislav, Sorry to hear. We know that our search feature can have trouble indexing keywords. It's on our list to address in the future, and I'll be sure that your example is added to the list to examine. Thanks.

  • Same problem here. Very frustrating.

When i ride a particular trail, i save the activity by the place's name, following by the date. When i search for activity by this name, i don't get all activities, and, sometimes, zero at all.

  • Same here.  I do an Activity Search and search for words in the name of the ride, and Strava doesn't find it.   Very frustrating.

  • It is VERY frustrating, how can you not search by name? I look for Tennis and it gets me all activities. Seems a quite basic programming task. I'll do it for you if you like

    Elle,

and it still doesn't work as it is supposed to... The search works only with whole words, no wildcards are accepted. You can't search for the part of the word.

I know in English there are not many uses for that, but in other languages it makes a lot of sense. For example: if I have activities "From home to the lake" and "From lake to the home", if you search for "Lake", the search will find both activities.
But in other languages for example Slovenian, you have two activities: "Od doma k jezeru" and "Od jezera do doma"... there's no way to find both activities with partial word jezer*. You have to write "jezeru" or "jezera" and it finds only one activity.

And please don't give me the answer: you can find both activities if you write "doma" ;)

  • Will it possible to search activities by date?
Mostly I don't change default name on an activity.
At this moment I have no chance to find a specific activity.

If the search take only affect to tour name. Are there some wildcards for adding date and time to activity names?
For example "Tour [date]" creates a tour with name "Tour 2017/10/19"

  • Hi Lucas, If you're just searching your own activities, you can use the Training Log to go to the year, month, week, or the date that you're looking for. However, if you're searching all Strava activities, the option to search by date is not available.

  • Yes, you are right. I want to search my own activities.

The interface of the trainings log needs to much mouse clicks. A simple search would be faster. ;)

  • I suddenly don't see activity search at all anymore - only segment. Did they get rid of this functionality? I really hope not, this is a hugely helpful part of Strava to study races and find new places to ride..

  • I have been trying to find "Activity Search" function on the website, but it has disappeared. Its been one of the most useful functionality of Strava premium accounts. Please restore this function asap!!!

  • I used to love searching for trail routes around me depending on what i felt like doing. I can’t understand I can’t even search routes around me... or even get the search activity page to come up.

  • I need to cancel my subsrciption. You could disable searching at some locations... Or there could be other solutions, but taking away one of the most useful features, its not accaptable.

  • This is so annoying. For me, it was one of the great things about Strava. I was able to check the course of the races I had signed up. This is definitely a very bad decision if they decide to get rid of it. Another reason not to use Strava.

  • As I have already asked, how do I get a refund, I have purchased something under false information, Strava did not let me know this feature had been remove when I purchased premier!

Please let me know how to get a refund!

  • The function is very frustrating. I like to tour and do different parkruns here in the UK and before I go I like to find out what corner of a park the start is and the elevation etc. Mostly when I search activities the results I get are a list of my own activities rather than what I want. eg: "Sheffield Hallam parkrun" or "Humber Bridge parkrun" I get either no results or just my activities.

  • That was a great and very useful feature.  One alternative is to segment explore, look at the leaderboard for segments, and see what ride was done to get on the leaderboard for that segment.  Then you can find the entire route someone rode to get on the leaderboard for that segment. Fortunately, I knew the date of the race and was able to somewhat filter the activities based on dates.  I just had to do this.

  • If you paid via PayPal then claim for refund through there, I got refunded today. The app isn't fit for purpose anymore

Does anyone know of any other apps that have a search feature?

  • Unbelievable - just because some dumb grunt used strava whilst running around their 'top secret' installation means everyone has to suffer - this was one of Stravas most useful features. Please just put blanket Privacy settings around sensitive places, and restore this function?

  • Terrible decision to get rid of activity search. People THEMSELVES should take care of sensitive info. TURN OF STRAVA if you dont want to have other people to see what you are doing. Strava will kill fun by disabling activity search.

  • Being able to search activities in new areas (and download the gpx files) was the only reason I have a strava premium account. Can you add back this functionality?

  • Agreed - please bring back the ability to search ALL activities by keyword or location.  Not just mine.

  • Seems like searching activities now only returns a list of *My activities*. Has the search feature been eliminated? Or does it now require premium membership?

  • Just do what I have done. Cancel your premium subscription, request refund via PayPal, hopefully if enough people vote with their feet and leave then they will do something about it 😊

  • Agree that the pre-2017 activity search was fantastic. That is, until it was watered down which showed only your activities or you had to enter special keywords to get it work. So frustrating.  I would like to see Strava bring back the full activity search to it's pre 2017 glory.  An easy fix would be to set everyone's account to "private" and you would opt-in to make it a "public" view.

This would allow the idiots and bone-heads that are incapable of changing their settings to keep bumbling through life. Along with the Create-your-own-route and Beacon, the Activity search (full version) was a fantastic tool.  Don't see why one should continue the Premium membership if all these features are disappearing.
