Remove "Suggested Follows" from the feed

Please take "Suggested Athletes" out of the Activity Feed.

This was irritating even when it lived on the right hand side of the screen.  Suggesting local 'pros' who I've never heard of before.  Now suggesting people like my old fraternity brother's daughter and others that I'd never want to connect with, etc. but taking up valuable space in the Activity feed every time I visit the page.

Please please please remove.  It's like an advertisement that has nothing to do with my workouts or those of my community.

Or at least remove for premium users.

Thanks

Mike

  • Sure, still testing...since March. I have requested the same as is mentioned here in #788164 and still nobody cares.

  • I also can't stand the suggested athlete thing in my feed. I came off all social media because I prefer to keep myself to myself. Now I am paying Strava to publicise what I do to the world. I just want to be able to follow a few people I actually know and share an interest with. Sort it out strava or I am going to just stick with Garmin Connect.

  • Please remove it or allow to disable it. Another premium member here and I will look elsewhere is this is made permanent.

    Thanks.

  • Please remove this feed. You provide a search option already.

  • After at least 3 months of "testing" this feature I'm fed up with it.  If it's still in my feed when my membership is up for renewal I will absolutely not renew.  For me this is now much more about the poor direction for the site and the extremely poor responsiveness of Strava support to the strong desire to get rid of these unwanted features.  The excuse of "testing" is lame, all sites do A/B testing and are willing to judge the effectiveness of a feature within days, it doesn't take months to test a new feature.

  • I am not happy with this level of intrusion.  I don't care people I may know have joined.  I have a limited amount of people that I want to let know that I am exercising.  This isn't facebook and shouldn't act like it.  There's an anti-connected social media revolution coming and Strava isn't part of that.  So for that reason, as a paying Premium member since May 2016, I'm out.  Well done for ruining it.

  • Strava: Don't forget that this st***d feature is redundant. The same suggestion can be seen in "Find and Invite" screen and this is only place where it should be. So please be so kind and remove this "feature". Really, it is not so difficult.

  • Totally agree with all the posts here, to the extent I wanted to add my vote. I hate this feature, I click the X to remove the suggestions for people I don't know, only to see more arrive. It's cluttered, annoying, and pointless. I'm a paid subscriber and I'd like the ability to turn this off. Can't believe anybody liked it.

  • I'm so completely annoyed by this feature and more so by Strava's ignoring our requests to turn off this feature and BS-ing us about "testing" the feature.   Maybe they're testing how many of us don't renew, who know.  I've been a member since 2012 and I've decided that I will not renew my premium membership when it comes up.  Good job Strava with ruining what was once a great site.

  • Hi, another premium customer annoyed by this unremovable clutter from my feed. Please provide an option to disable.

  • As a Premium user I find this very annoying and would like the option to turn this off, I won't renew my subscription if this stays, same goes for the 'jumbled' timeline, total mess. Strava is trying to turn itself into a Sporty Social app and I believe this is the opposite of what most athletes want.

  • I have cancelled my premium subscription and will not renew it until this feature has been disabled.

Strava's simplicity is also its greatest strength. Not only does this feature clutter my feed but it has suggested I follow the teenage daughters of some of my cycling crew - this is highly inappropriate.

  • Thanks to all for your patience.

We have work planned to show Suggested Follows only occasionally based on criteria yet to be defined. We appreciate the feedback shared here and hope we can make this happen soon."

So still no option to completely disable the suggested athletes option, like most users in this topic have asked for. Wondering what this forum is about when Strava is appreciating feedback but isn't listening to its customers. Privacy settings as high as possible and no paid subscription anymore for me then, looking for alternatives.

  • I would also like the ability to turn this feature off. I can figure out who to follow on my own and I don't want my profile auto added as a suggestion for others. Surely this should be a PRIVACY switch? I'm not in need of a social networking app - this is the kind of thing which will lose me as a premium member.

  • I've been a premium member since May 2012.
I think the suggested athletes feature is annoying and a breach of my privacy. Hence I've just cancelled my premium membership

  • Hi Elle.  So, more than 5 months have passed and this feature is still "being experimented with," "being discussed," and "being evaluated and fine tuned."  Ugh.

Here's a thought:  I follow about 75 folks and have about the same numbers of followers.  Only one of them is a Premium Member.  That's almost nobody.  Obviously, there is not enough perceived added value for this.  Why not offer a free 1-year Premium Membership for riders with more than, say, 150 rides/10,000 miles, or swimmers with more than 50 swims/ 25 miles of swimming?  No manual entries.  Maybe in a year you'll make this better, your "evergreen" athletes will use it, like it, and renew, and word will get out that it's worth something.

And, if you would just turn off that pathetic Suggested Athletes that would be great or allow your users to do it themselves if they wish.

Stick with the basics:  maps and data.  Leave the matchmaking to your grandma or favorite aunt.

  • Strava please remove this annoying "suggested athlete" feature and let it be optional. Right now the only way to remove it is to unfollow my friends which I don't want to do. I can't believe this thread has been going on since March!

  • Agree. It's obvious this annoying feature is not wanted. Please get rid and stop trying to be Facebook.

While I'm here, please put the feed back to chrono-order. Most annoying when I can't even track my own workouts chronologically. You're turning the feed into Facebook-style, and who wants that in a training record? These are not "stories" and you do not know what is of most interest to me. I will not be renewing my Premium membership as I'm not interested in funding the social media-driven policy Strava seems to be adopting. Shame as I really liked the site at first, now it's just getting annoying.

  • Turn this pain off, I've never heard of these people. I was going to go Premium, but if this is what you are going to do I'm not now!

  • Today I followed through and downgraded my account from premium to free because I'm still seeing this suggested athlete feature.  We've all asked to have this removed or at least have the ability to optionally turn it off for premium users.  But this has fallen on deaf ears.  So goodbye premium membership.

  • Simple fix guys, just use adblock and block that particular portion of the feed if you don't like seeing it.

  • @Cuttsy returns: Easy to "fix" when accessing Strava via a browser, but impossible to do it on Android/iOS app.

  • Once again I'm having to dismiss many suggested contacts.  It is a pain.  It is unwanted.  I am a paying customer because I want to support your company.  Are trying to force your social network on me by suggesting people I do not know and do not want to add to my feed?  Where do you come up with this seeming random group of people?  In the hundreds of suggestions you have made I have only recognized a couple of people. It is a joke.  And annoying.  Please, please, please allow me to turn it off.  It is irritating.

  • I should add that on my iPhone the little 'x's to dismiss each suggested stranger are very small and inevitably I end up mis-clicking and opening an one of the strangers profiles with requires me to go back to feed and start deleting again.

  • The most recent update appears to have fixed this - at least for Premium. My wife's non-premium app still has the recommended follows. That's the way it should be. That said, it could be that it will pop up occasionally even on Premium. The update brings a nice update to the feed too.

  • 6 months later and the problem persists. It is apparent that Strava has no intention to fix this.

Out of pure desperation I have changed my profile so that I'm no longer following anyone. Will I still receive notifications after this? I hope not, because if I do I will have to consider deleting my account.

  • On Premium. (IOS11 most recent app version) Love the upgrade, but... suggested follows still there. Still irrelevant. Have cleared twice.

Strava - If there’s a fix to turn this annoyance off please say how. If not, please say why?

  • Yes, I moved to a new city, and updated my location in my profile, yet I'm still primarily receiving suggestions to befriend people from my previous city. Frankly, I want to hide suggested friends completely since I use Strava for workouts not socializing.
