Strava Drops iPhone 4s

I think it SUCKS that Strava is dropping support for iPhone 4s. This is just another example of Apple running our lives and taking grabs from our pockets. I'm very disappointed!

    Hi Rafael,

If you downloaded the Strava app to iTunes prior to when we ended support for iOS 9, you can still install the last supported version of Strava on your iPhone.

If you have not previously downloaded the Strava app, there is a bit of a workaround. See this support article. If you have access to an iOS10 device somewhere you can download Strava on that, then it'll be one of your "purchased" apps (even though it's free). From there they can go to your list of "purchased" apps on your iOS9 device and download it. The App Store will at that point allow you to install a previously compatible version (v9).

  • Ellie, this doesn't seem to be the case for me. I had it on my phone an had to remove it temporarily and now I can't add it back. What's more, I have it downloaded on another Apple device.

  • Hi all !

...... is this why I can no longer see my older ride data on my i4s?

Actually, I cant see it on the Stave site either :(

Is there a fix/? Have I  changed a setting somehow?

    Cheers

  • Just give us back a version that runs on iOS9. Just make it available and allow us to have it.

  • Hi Richard, I wish we could but Apple does not make it possible for previous versions of the app to be available on iTunes. Have you tried the tips above?

  • Sorry, can't do that Elle. I don't have any other Apple device, and didn't have it on my iPhone while iOS9 was still supported. Like Edika wrote, I only want to use my iPhone 4s as a cycle computer with Strava.  I believe it is possible to sideload an app from outside iTunes, if only you can get hold of it?  I don't care if it means jailbreaking the phone, in fact I'd be delighted to do it.  Couldn't you make the earlier versions that have become unavailable through the official stores (ie. iTunes or Google Play) available on your own website, with suitable caveats?

  • Hmm, I wasn't aware that Apple would only allow each company to release one app.  Sure is a shame, because if they would, then someone at Strava with two or more functioning brain cells could rename a previous version to something else and release it as a different app.

Of course, if they actually cared about their customers, backward compatibility would have mattered far more than sucking up to Apple in the first place.

  • Here is how to do it. You can install the old versions.

Download Itunes 12.6.3 to your PC. Download apps using Itunes including Strava to your phone. Go to the Apple Store and search for the app. It is now shown as downloaded. Click on it and it will say you need 10.0OS however it will ask if you want to install an old version. Install it and your done :)

  • It is the overview screen which does not show your rides anymore. You can still view your own ride on a 4s as soon as you receive a kudo. Via the messages screen the ride can be presented.

There are still many 4s users. The value of Strava is the community. Very unfriendly to drop support a large number of users..

  • I have Strava installed on my iPhone 4s, but it doesn't work.  When I run it, the splash screen comes up, it pauses for a 5 seconds, then it dies and I'm returned to my iPhone home screen.  The app store shows version 108.00, but doesn't show an option to update the app.  Is there anyway to downgrade the app to an older version that will run on iOS 9.3.6?
