Strava Beacon Feature with Apple Watch

The beacon feature is fantastic when used properly.  Not only is it a way to share your position with someone, which helps for safety, and for communicating where you are (in real-time).  I rode downtown two weeks ago in the dark--I easily communicated my location as I was meeting a group.

My feedback is two-fold.  First, it is dark when I commute to and from work now.  I launch the Strava app to record my trips, and I strongly want the beacon feature to automatically send the text to my wife.  I don't want to dig for my phone when it is cold outside.

Second, if the feature is not made automatic, make a control on the apple watch to send the beacon text.  I want to control this feature from my watch (if the text does not automatically go out when I start each cycling adventure).

Otherwise, I love the Strava product, and really enjoy keeping track of my efforts each week!

Athletes, thanks for your patience. We’re thrilled to have an update on this for you. Now, you can share your location with loved ones while you track your live stats, directly on Apple Watch with Beacon. And with cellular watch service, you can even leave your phone at home while you’re out riding or running and still use Beacon. We’re hoping that helps make the feature easier to use. • This is excellent feedback, Mr. Melton. I am a fellow Strava user, and echo what is expressed in this note. It is quite surprising, and more than a little disappointing that Strava is, apparently, not monitoring these boards and making some sort of reply. I would think that in the four + months since you posted this, that could have happened. Am I wrong?

  • You are correct. I continued to be frustrated with my Apple Watch's ability to post to Strava. I Craigslist-ed it a month ago, and got a Garmin Vivoactive HR.

Strava has been working hard for this eco system. Everything just works. My wife gets a beacon any time I ride automatically. I only press start!

  • I too would love to be able to initiate Beacon from my apple watch!

  • I am also missing this feature in the Strava Apple Watch app and would love to see it integrated.

  • I agree wholeheartedly that it would be great to have this as part of the Apple Watch app.

  • First time on Strava help, and why did I come here? Yep, I want to start my activity with my Apple watch and have the beacon text go automatically every trip to my partner.  Also disappointed that when I went back to starting my activity on my phone (in order to send the beacon text), my heart rate was no longer recorded (as had been the day before when I started the app with my watch).  Is it the case that I can start activity with phone and send beacon text or start with watch and record heart rate, but not both?

  • I am doing the Premium Trial period SPECIFICALLY to try the Beacon notification "FEATURE".

I like using my Apple watch to start, pause and end/save my rides, it is easy to access and a quick glance tells you everything.

I was confused when I found out that I could not start the Beacon with my Watch. So I started the Beacon (after starting the ride on the Watch) with my iPhone thinking it would sync with my Apple Watch. Nope, two separate entities and at least the Watch activity was synced and saved, the iPhone (Beacon) one was not.

I have used the Beacon feature twice and both times it said it saved the data (ride), but I can find it no where.

I came to the Support Community and was dismayed to find others had a similar request, "start the beacon, when we start the ride, ON THE WATCH!"

Mr. Melton sold his watch and got a Garmin device, so he could use Beacon. I will cancel Premium first, I LIKE my Apple Products. I am assuming that Strava programmers are writing the (Apple Watch) App code.

The Beacon feature is the only reason I would upgrade to Premium for $8 a month.

  • I agree with everyone here. Please add beacon to the Apple Watch! I am a dad with 2 young kids and would love this for my wife.

  • Well, it is quite apparent Strava admin does NOT monitor this board, or if they do, have no interest in responding to our concerns and needs.

I seriously wanted to become a Premium member just so I could use the Beacon feature.

Nothing else in the premium membership is of any use to me over any other app. I expressed my concern to the Support team and got a "boilerplate" response and nothing more.

I posted here and joined others in requesting this feature in the watch app. Still nothing. So while I welcome you to our group, sadly I think it is one more voice yelling into the void.

Who knows, perhaps one day . . .

  • It used to be that the watch app was tied into the iPhone app (adding heartrate), which was nice and would have worked with the beacon. Then at some point they separated them. Now, I can see how people might just want to use the watch and not mess with the phone, and you could add me to that list if it could fire off the beacon. If not it would be super nice if the strava app on the iPhone could just tap into the watch heartrate during the activity. That was a key impetus in getting the watch, since I was sure Strava would do a great implementation of using it within their app.

  • I have been watching everyone's responses all along. I agreed and agreed with each new take people brought on this beacon issue.

Then, the Apple Watch Series 3 came out.  It has LTE and WiFi connectivity--it does not need the weak, un-reliable connection back to an iPhone or iPad.  This changes everything.

Strava support, if you are listening, build your watch app to utilize this network connectivity and send the becon with the watch--forget the phone.  That is not working, and now, with my Garmin Vivoactive HR, it still is spotty and does not usually go out.

I would like the reliability of the beacon service to improve, but first, make the service AWESOME on the new Apple Watch (or "make hay while the sun shines"), then come improve it for the rest of us.

The Strava service is awesome as there is nothing but honesty on my rides.  I either did it, or I stayed home and slept.  I am a premium member enjoying a social network of positive, hard-working people, and I enjoy that.

  • I came here for all the above reasons.
I want to have phone and watch sync, monitor heart rate and set the beacon. I also upgraded Strava expecting these things to work.

  • I heartily second this request & the feedback provided by the others here.  As a premium subscriber, Beacon is one of the reasons I upgraded.  Not to be able to initiate it from the watch makes the feature, less useful.

Strava, any feedback on if this is in the works, or when it might happen?

    Cheers,

    Mike

  • I also agree. I would love to initiate Beacon from the Apple Watch, especially now that the watch has cellular. I would like to not have to carry my phone to use this premium feature. If not, it feels like a waste of money...

  • Same here. I love using my Apple Watch to start add stop the rides. But the beacon is important to me. Hopefully they can do something to fix this.

  • This thread has been up here since November of 2016 and we have had NO response from Strava on this issue. They don’t monitor the board or just don’t care to add this feature to the watch app.

I use the Strava app along with the Map My Ride app and while I prefer the Strava app, the Map My Ride app does also have a similar feature called Live Tracking. I’ll check it today and see if I can start the Tracking with the watch and let y’all know.

I really wish the Watch enabled the feature, the Strava Watch app is so perfect otherwise!!

  • We hear you. Because both Beacon and Strava Live Segments require continuous cell data communication, the redesigned Strava app for Apple Watch could not support these features while working in standalone mode using the watch's GPS only. There is a way we could re-introduce these features to the Apple Watch experience if your phone is with you. We hope to pursue Beacon for Apple Watch in the future, but at this time it is not in development.

  • Come on Strava, get the finger out and include the beacon on the Apple Watch otherwise I’m cancelling and using something else.

  • FAO Elle,

"There is a way we could re-introduce these features to the Apple Watch experience if your phone is with you."

I have an Apple Watch series 1 so always have my phone with me on a run.  Regardless of where I send the beacon text from, can you please re-introduce the necessary features so that I can have a beacon text (from anywhere) AND a heart rate from my watch on the same activity?

I have scoured so many help pages and forums but come to the conclusion it is no longer possible.  Happy to be proved wrong!

    Many thanks.

  • The whole purpose of signing up for premium was the safety feature of beacon since I ride alone most often. Now I’m resorting to Life360 to have my family monitor where I am and cancelling my premium service now that I have my new apple watch to track my rides while saving my phone’s battery life for emergency calls. Obvious Strava is pro Garmin and not supportive of Apple users.

  • Agree. As a long-time Strava premium user, it's a great disappointment to hear this isn't even on the roadmap. Providing live tracking to a spouse or designated support crew is absolutely critical when I'm on long distance runs and rides. And the purpose of having an Apple watch with GPS is to carry less stuff while out on those adventures while still maintaining connectivity. It would be nice to see safety features carry more weight on the development roadmap at Strava. In the meantime, I'm deleting the app from my watch... It just doesn't give me anything that a half dozen other apps can do--including the ones that came free with the watch. :-/

  • Apple Watch - Strava Beacon Work-Around:  Upload rides to Strava from the cycling app called Cyclemeter. Cyclemeter has a beacon-like feature (link sent to e-mail instead of text) that will let friends and family track your progress.  When you start a Cyclemeter workout from the Apple watch, e-mails are sent to family and friends.  When you terminate the Cyclemeter workout from the Apple watch, your ride data (speed, power, heart, cadence--everything)  uploads instantly to Strava.  The Strava beacon is really cool, but this trick of using Cyclemeter to upload data may be the next best thing for Strava users who want to keep friends and family informed of progress.

  • +1 to this entire thread — I’m starting to get pretty upset with Strava. First i bought a Pebble watch specifically for adding heart rate data to my Strava rides, only to discover Apple and Strava had some sort of deal that only the iWatch could do this. I tried a Microsoft band next, and still the experience was horrible. I finally caved and bought an iWatch, soley for use with Strava, and I find that (1) if i start a ride on the phone, my watch does nothing to indicate speed/distance/heart rate and (2) my beacon text doesnt get sent or even prompted to send.

Please, please, please make this premium (paid) feature just work the way it should. This should be your bread and butter, but instead the free version is nearly fully functional for my purposes due to these glaring flaws.

  • Everyone, Apple is likely giving Strava troubles. Since posting this original thread I Craigslist-ed my Apple Watch and got a Garmin Vivoactive HR. Any Garmin watch reliably sends the beacon and records your activity. I love my Garmin!

  • This is a serious problem. In order to record heart rate you HAVE to start your ride from the Apple Watch, and for some reason I cannot possibly comprehend, the Watch app doesn’t actually communicate with the phone app at all... so there’s no way to use both heart rate tracking AND beacon at the same time unless I start separate rides from both my watch AND my phone at the same time and then delete one of the duplicates when the ride is over. This is stupid and deeply undermines the two major features I pay monthly for. This needs to be fixed, and the fact that this simple request is getting close to two years old is shameful.
