Audio Announcement Suddenly Stop Working

Hi I've been using Strava on my iPhone 4S for several months and it works perfectly, until about 10 days ago, March 12th, when I was attending the DC RnR, I turned on Strava to keep track of my pace. But it didn't make any audible announcement. The good side is, this saved the battery and it was able to keep track of my 4 hours run.

I tried it this morning again, I checked and double-checked all the settings of "Audio Cues", everything was turned on.

Then I checked my phone, yep, it's not in vibrate mode. But it just wouldn't make any announcement. At one point I think I heard some very faint noise, not sure if that's the audio announcement or not.

The Audio Announcement works really well before March 12th. Just wonder why it would stop working all of sudden.

Any suggestion/advice is appreciated.

    Sorry for the confusion everyone.

There are no known issues with audio announcements when recording with the iPhone or Android app. See Charles's steps below for how to find the audio announcements settings in the app to turn them off or on.

If you are recording with the Apple Watch, no audio announcements are available. However we do have haptic split notifications for each mile or kilometer available at this time.

    Are there any other questions?

  • I can get them to work only if I'm already listening to something.

  • Same problem for me too - using Iphone6, and usually listening to music. It used to fade out the music to tell me my pace, now nothing.  All switched on and volume turned up.

I'll keep trying different settings, but am interested to know if someone works out what it is...

  • Having tried reinstalling the app a few times, I finally did a factory reset on my phone.  After reinstalling strava, audio cues are now back.  A bit of a radical step, but it worked!
Still not sure if the issue was caused by the phone or the application, but judging from the number of people facing the same issue on various phones, it looks like its the app.  Let's see how long before it happens again. Hopefully it won't

  • My wife has the same problem with the J5 but for me the problem only started after performing an update on my S6 Edge. I would like to get it sorted, otherwise I must consider a diferent running app because audio notifications are what keep me on the pace. Please help...

  • Ugh! I've been having the same problem and after several updates the problem persists. Has anyone heard anything? Any advice or comments from the people at strava???

  • Success ! For me at least the following simple steps solved it. On my iPhone, select record, select settings, select audio cues. Then change some settings - I turned on 'start/stop/pause' and then the demo voice prompt plays. I also changed announcements to half mile. This change of settings has then made the cues work and come on over the headphones back to normal !.... Hope it works for others.

  • I got a message from Strava support  a few days ago saying that they had removed audio cues in one of the updates and were working to get them back on.  But this doesn't make any sense.... I resolved my issue as per earlier post and audio cues have been working with out fail since then.

  • Audio cues not working on my Sony M4 Aqua either (running Android 6.01). Couple of runs ago, the tone sounded at the end each km but no voice with pace etc, tonight nothing at all.

  • I'm using a BLU R1 HD running Android 6.0 and audio announcements aren't working for me, though I do hear the segment chimes.

  • Strava has been working correctly for me for about 12 mths but lately has stopped recording to my HTC One M7.

The audible announcement of Ride Started or Ride Stopped no longer happens and neither does any recording???

  • Stopped talking a month or so ago. Reinstalling app did not help. I’d love to fix this issue. I really loved hearing the app announce my splits. Apple Watch 3. It worked great the first moment month or so I had the watch.

  • See above Vern, audio announcements are not currently available on the Strava app for Apple Watch, but you can enable haptic notifications for run splits.

  • Elle: the why was it working for quite some time before it stopped?

  • Elle: also note that the Apple Watch app has an "Audio Cues" setting section in which the "Run splits" and "Start, Stop, Pause" toggle switches are live and enabled. And haptic has stopped working as well.

  • I had this problem. Solution was to enable text to speech:

Open your device's Settings app .
Open Accessibility, then Text-to-speech output and enable this.

  • Finally found the solution: listen to music with airpods. When I do, I hear the split announcements like I used to. Apparently pairing with the airpods somehow disables the local watch speaker.

  • I got this issue only after installing a training app that linked with Strava - I uninstalled that but the audio issue persisted so  I uninstalled and reinstalled Strava - all tickety-boo now.

  • Audio announcements including splits stopped working on my Apple Watch 3 a few weeks ago. When this happened in th the last, turning the watch off and on fixed; but that’s not helping here. This was the major benefit for me of the Strava Apple Watch app for my runs

  • +1 to the person above who mentioned Google Text-to-Speech.  I had mine disabled trying to debug some other issues... Never would have imagined that it was necessary to hear the sweet start/stop and splits from the lovely Lady Strava.

A small list of these would be helpful inside the app where you turn this feature on/off.  It took me a few days to find a solution for something that is known and shouldn't be an issue.
