Manually add Distance for an Indoor/Stationary Activity

When uploading indoor activities like indoor cycling or treadmill, no distance appears. Only HR. Would be useful to activate a field in wich we can type in the distance

  • Will Strava EVER resolve this issue?

  • I just smashed a half marathon PB, and I am missing 100 meters on Strava. I would not even need to have it recorded vs the other runners, but I would still want the actual distance recorded, even if this gets excluded from my records on segments.

There is absolutely no decent reason this can't be implemented. This is also why I will never suscribe to Premium. I was a paying member to the far inferior Runtastic in the past until I moved here. But this lack of consideration is a clear deal breaker.

  • ^Strava simply refuses. They are a social media platform which just happens to include some extremely basic run/cycling features. Metrics which matter are not in Strava's wheelhouse, nor will they ever be There is a mass exodus from this sham of a platform. The water is perfectly fine in a world without Strava!

  • Very unlikely that I'll return as a premium customer if this is not fixed :-(

  • strava just made some cosmetic changes, i think they are too busy to make it look pretty rather than functional. makes sense no?

  • I don't think I would re-subscribe to Strava Premium without this feature.

This is an easy option to implement and long overdue.

Strava, why aren't you willing to provide this feature?

  • I would just like to be able to upload my trainer data directly to Strava. Not asking for anything manual. It automatically uploads my rides, so why not when I'm locked in on a trainer? I get that they're worried about the manual aspect of the other ones, but there would be nothing manual about this and should be simple. Doesn't make sense to me, please fix this

  • I had no idea how many people are unhappy with Strava until looking into "how to edit activities" and finding out you can't. I thought I was the only one unhappy. I regret joining premium when I feel the free version was great (when compared to paying for very little additional benefits) It appears that "STRAVA is about to jump the shark" What Apps are people using and really liking?

  • On a bike, if you have a speed sensor, it will still record your distance and heart rate on a trainer no problem. I just turn off the GPS on my Edge500 (it works even if I don't there's just squiggly lines all over my living room as it tries to fit 30 miles of speed data into the space where the GPS was stationary the whole time) and it uploads to Strava no problem. The problem is really just on treadmills, there's no way to get your heart rate data in Zwift for the Fitness and Freshness algorithm to take it into account. Even with a Garmin footpod (which the Edge 500 won't recognize...). I think if I had a run or multi-sport Garmin that recognized the foot sensor, instead of the bike-specific Edge it would work and upload fine. That's more Garmin's fault than Zwift's though.

I don't think anyone is actually leaving Strava over this (maybe 4 or 5 people who want to trim their nose to spite their face). If you use Zwift on your trainer, it pretty much gets rid of this problem, but you would tend to use Zwift in conjunction with Strava, as Zwift is horrible for looking at any past ride data. It's great for making the time pass by quicker on the trainer and helping to motivate you to get on the trainer though. They added running to their iOS apps, so it could be used to get treadmill runs in Strava for Apple users.

  • @Don in my case the treadmill runs are not a problem - with my old FR405 i just used foot pod and with 920XT dont even need that it will record the distance and speed correctly. My problems are spin bike rides where you cant install speed sensor. All activities are zero km. I have to delete them and create new one with correct distance.

On my last run I had to restart my phone mid-way. The second half of the run was lost. I just want to be able to edit it and put in the real distance and time, for my personal tracking.

Strava, if you're worried about cheats, it seems simple to me:

     - If you manually edit/input an entry, put a label next to it to show it's been manually added/edited

     - Use manual distances for overall mileage counts etc - as a separate entry, or with a label to say it includes X manual distance

     - Don't use manual entries for eligibility for medals, competitions etc.

  • Such a simple solution and such a shitty company for not implementing it. One of the most pathetic customer service issues I've seen.

  • Not sure if anyone on this thread participates in National Bike Challenge but Strava is the only app that NBC allows for 2017.  Not cool for anyone who may need to make a manual adjustment.

  • Well it wouldn't be a very fair challenge if people could just make manual adjustments. It would throw the doors wide open to cheating and make the entire thing a farce.

  • It is simple, if it has been edited you are taken out of any segments or challenge!

  • Exactly. We know it, they know it, everybody knows it. Years of people complaining for 5 minutes of coding time. They just do not care.

  • My vote. I cannot upload a treadmill activity with HR data due to this. Quite limiting and useless.

  • Awesome. I thought you were making app for US. Which satisfies OUR needs, all the more so because we pay for it. Meanwhile, for the past 3 years, you can not wait for such a silly thing as manually adding distance.
    Be ashamed.

  • +1 for manual distance. This has been such a long standing oversight. Needed for treadmill runs and when gps fails. Or for when you just dont. They could separate it out so it doesnt contribute to "challenge" totals if that what tgey are worried about.

  • Hi. I have the same problem when importing indoor swims from Endomondo (either via gpx file or using tapiriik.com).

Distance just shows as 0m (time is ok). Not being able to edit this distance is a severe limitation. I would strongly advise to allow editing the distance (at least in cases where it is set to zero). What's the point of having an activity in Strava with 0m distance?

    Thanks.

  • Keith: Yes, Strava has seen this, but since strava is only consisting of billing and marketing department, nothing will be developed.
You can do like I and a lot of other people have done: Just cancel your premium subscription.
    Don’t support this company.

  • This is from the admins a couple of years ago: "Thanks everyone for your feedback. We recognize that this is a long-standing request in our community forums, but we have no plans to incorporate manual data fields for activities on Strava. You're welcome to record your indoor distance in a manual activity - unfortunately that's the closest solution we have currently.

We'll keep you posted if anything changes!"

Basically, it's really really complicated to incorporate this change. It involves computers and coding and some other stuff that's really hard to explain. They have had their greatest minds hard at work for years. It's obviously harder than sending a man to the moon. Join the club and cancel your membership.
