Hide Start time of Activity to Followers

Attention to all those who exercise when others think that should be working!   Sometimes, I sneak out in the middle of the day - after I've done lots of work in the morning or accomplished a really big task.  But, my friends give me grief because they see activity start times in the middle of the day.  Consequently, I have ceased inviting others to follow me - all because Strava reveals my start time. I would love to expand my connections/followers, but I cannot.

So, I would like there to be an option on my profile to show/no show the time of the exercise to my followers. (it's on a variety of screens)

 - Note:  To those who think that hiding the exercise is the answer.  I do not want to hide my exercise, I want to do the opposite - I want to broadcast it - just not when I'm doing it!

  • Yes the needs to happen. It should be easy for your techies to add the feature of turning of the one stamp.

  • +1 for this feature as well - I cannot imagine the creation of a user defined parameter in your profile to control the visibility settings of start times is that difficult surely?

Privacy is becoming more and more of a concern to many and a "social" business requires the "network effect" to continue to grow, if customers and users feel privacy concerns are being ignored, it will only lead to one thing...

  • +1 on that!

No one needs this information but the person who did the ride.

First, there's a personal safety aspect to the issue -- if you follow a routine schedule for certain activities, people can find you: they don't need to know where you live, just where you might be at a certain time.

Second, to echo others, I don't need my co-workers or other professional colleagues seeing that I cut out early to enjoy a ride  :-)

  • Use Mapmyrun, you can do this here no problem. The arrogance of strava is annoying. Not listening to their customers... Will be the downfall of the site.

  • I’ve previously commented on here, asking for some action on this matter from Strava. Nothing has happened, so I took action myself.....and stopped paying for a Premium membership.

  • +1  on this, currently on a premium 1 month trial. The lack of this feature is a glaring omission from what a premium product should offer.

  • I cancelled my premium membership because of this, now I'm cancelling my account. If I must hide my activities from friends and colleagues, why have the data in a social platform at all? Goodbye Strava.

  • I feel obligated to continue this thread and ask for what I would consider a needed privacy or premium account feature. I am also considering canceling my account for not being able to hide time of day information.

  • Surely this can't be overly complicated to achieve. Its much needed.

  • This has been going on way too long Strava.  How can you ignore the requests and the valid reasons and give nothing in return? We love the platform but it won't take much for your user base to walk.

  • Hi Elle,

You've been giving us that reaponae for way too long a time. Original request was in 2014.

When will Strava give us a REAL explanation on this subject? Enough with the BS non-response answers. Your loyal premium customers are asking for something that seems relatively simple. If there is a reason you won't give it to us, than you should provide us with a genuine explanation.

Strava's service will have real competition eventually. Hopefully Strava will start paying attention to its customers before then.

  • The privacy features should include the option to hide the start time! This should be a simple fix. I am contemplating discontinuing my premium subscription if this basic change cannot be implemented.

  • Elle Anderson,

To me this is more of a safety concern. If I run the same times of day in the same locations, for example parking at a trail head, I do not want someone following me to see patterns in my runs. I'm essentially advertising when I will be out by myself, possibly in a remote area, or when my car is unattended. This has been a request for FOUR YEARS. It should be a simple fix to display only the date.

Strava obviously thinks safety is a concern or they wouldn't have taken other security measures. And this should go right along with it. What else needs to be done? We are paying $59 per year and yet we can't control who sees the exact time and place where we are running. You're essentially making us choose between having private activities or public. The real solution would be to have public activities without showing all our cards.

  • Feature needs to be included asap. Lots of members looking for it, and for some time. There are times I don't want the time of my activity shown for a number of reasons, but I still want to share the activity. Currently and for some time, I either have to hide activity or not log it. Please Strava, sort this.

  • I first commented on this years ago.  This is really frustrating.  And the fact Strava doesn't even drop by and share its point of view is also frustrating.  What's the crime in getting this done??

  • Feature is still missing after many years of asking. More troublesome, there is no good response. I am wondering if they will respond on their Twitter account.

  • The most irritating thing about this this is Strava’s unwillingness to provide a rationale for non-action. Strava has put a lot of thought into almost everything they have implemented over the years. It stands to reason that the decision not to add this feature is also deliberate. Why leave paying subscribers in the dark?

There is clearly a simple path to enabling this feature and a there has clearly been a decision not implement. Strava should have the stones to tell us why.

  • I’ve previously commented on this thread. Due to lack of action and certainly lack of comment from Strava, I had threatened to remove my premium membership, to which I stopped paying many months ago. I would encourage those serious about this to do the same.

I still believe this to be a serious security and privacy issue. Regardless of whether someone follows you or not, patterns can still be seen in your exercise regime, whether through Strava flybys or friends of friends.

Strava.....give your users the right to choose if they want to display their exercise start times.
