Ability to Set Private Goals

I would like to have a "private/public" option for goals.  When I set goals I don't necessarily want anyone else to be able to see them.  Having goals is part of my training which I prefer not to share.

  • I also would like to have a "private/public" option for goals. When I first set some goals to have them appear in the activity feed for all to see on the strava dashboard was highly disappointing, my response was to immediately delete them as I have no desire to share this kind of information.

In fact forget the 'public' option and just make all goals private as I am sure this is what most people would prefer. It is potentially a great feature, but is just not going to get much use as it stands.

  • Also chiming in to add I would like to set private goals - since it's a personal goal, I don't understand why it's being broadcasted to begin with.  When I'm bored at work, I have a tendency to go through and add some goals, though i don't need dozens of them added to my dashboard feed.

  • Strava recently stated they have no immediate plans to address this. Weird. I simply don't use the feature since it was built broken. I really only need about 1 more reason to nix my premium account.

  • they want to encourage people to share things... which is ok...

what they dont want to see is that allowing people to keep some stuff private allows people to use the site as its only training tool instead of using it just for the social part of it....

if they provided this private-goals option as a pro feature, this alone would make the pro subscription worth for me

  • Seriously strava, just place this in an upcoming sprint, surely this must be a low hanging fruit to develop. The personal goal-feature is tightly connected to the garmin device integration and I DON'T want to spam my social feed with 50+ updated goals whenever I want to update the info in my devices, nor am I interested in seeing the same spam from others.

Also, as a competitive rider I want to keep some cards to myself. Such as specific training goals. This is a major oversight.

To hear that you're not even considering this is a huge let down for me personally. One of the most important features of a social network is being able to control your level of privacy - you're not giving me that control in this instance.

I urge you to reconsider putting this back on the agenda.

  • Perfectly stated Christoffer A.

I have been requesting this change for over a year. It truly seems that Strava wants to loose all of their Premium users.

  • I was shocked and very annoyed when my personal goal was broadcast to all. As an older rider, I am working on improving my fitness, and certainly did not need the rest of my large riding group to see that goal for a popular climb. Totally poor design to have it broadcast by default, worse, no ability to control it. I have let my premium membership expire, since it has too little added benefit. Such a shame.

  • To everyone on this thread - Given that Strava has made it clear that they will not implement private goals I've decided to write a goals app using the Strava API that works with your Strava data and will allow complete privacy plus a feature-rich set of goals options.  Please let me know if there are any features in particular you would like in such an app.  Initially it will be for iPhone only (I'm an iOS developer) but if the iOS version is sufficiently popular there would be an Android version as well. You can send your ideas and opinions to me at cscummingsiiiATgmailDOTcom.

  • +1 from me. Please add this option. Especially for premium users this option should be available!

  • Just set my first goal and now see it spamming on everyone's feed, absolutely ridiculous!! Why they can't give a privacy option beggars belief? Listen to your users Strava!

  • I would like to add my support to the request for private goals. Not necessarily as an option, just make them all private, I'm sure that is what most people want and if it makes it easier if might get done.

  • Well I was excited to see this post but very disappointed to see that there is not likely to be any action from Strava. I would love to set Goals and am sure it would be a great way to improvemy cycling but I don't want to bombard my followers with what will be essentially totally boring for them. I am not a competitive cyclist but I can see that if I was there would also be a serious problem of letting my competition know what areas I was working on.

Please Strava understand that this is important, you have just been promoting live segments so that we can watch how we are going in relation to our goals but make setting them up impossible.

  • This is disappointing. I'm on a premium trial currently, added a goal and promptly deleted it as soon as it showed up in my activity feed. Best times up hills - of course I want to share and compare, but goals - absolutely no way. Strava as a social app is great, everyone uses it and I like being able to see what my mates and the pros are up to. Am I going to pay for that privilege? No!

No premium features (apart from heatmaps) have me considering it beyond the trial. This is exactly the kind of thing, if implemented properly, that would get me to consider parting with my hard earned cash.

Live segments in their current guise are annoying and unhelpful, this is the kind of feature that makes them helpful.

I hope you re-consider. Until then I'll be going back to free plan.

  • Come on, Strava tech folks. I post 99% of my rides publicly and "usually" have nothing to hide. But as a Cat 1/2/3 level racer, I occasionally need to keep a few rides private when peaking for National level race events so other competitors don't see if I'm in amazing (or not so amazing) shape. I NEED the ability to keep my ride posts private every once in awhile, but still want it to be saved with my overall accumulated data for training purposes. PLEASE add this feature ASAP (now, not 2,4,6 more years from now) if you want to keep many of us Premium members around. Thanks in advance for being a professional, customer service based company & adding this to your features.

  • I agree.  Really?  Can't make this private? I think everyone would agree, just make all private goals private.  Seems like a simple code fix.

"Our focus at the moment is on social features." Is Strava a training application or a cycling Facebook?

  • Echoing comments made over the past 3+ years, I too would like to be able to set private goals.  I just received a free trial after purchasing a Garmin 520.  I'm not going to be setting KOM's so the goal setting looked like a meaningful way to benefit from the live segment function.  But I have no interest in broadcasting my goals to the world, so after setting two goals and then seeing them show up in the public feed, I immediately cancelled them.  I suspect I will be cancelling my membership too.

  • The lack of a private goal options really makes Strava a second rate platform.

  • I'm trying to regain fitness and setting goals is a good move but I don't want to broadcast it to the world so the goals feature is useless on this platform.  Goals should absolutely default to private or at least hide the target value (i.e. show that I have set a FTP goal but don't say what it is).

From a programming perspective, this is really trivial.  There are no crazy calculations or such, just a visibility toggle.  Truly, this would take a minimal amount of effort and would satisfy a large number of PAYING users.  Get it done.

  • Simon Cotton - you've found the easiest and best solution. Since Strava has had NO interest in adding a public/private setting for goals, over the last three years, just change the default from public to private, as most, if not ALL Strava subscribers prefer. Surely, even Strava's over-worked programmers can handle is simple task.

  • Bob, Strava seem very determined to push the platform as a social one and completely ignore users requests for what would be a simple fix. Does anyone really want to broadcast their goals anyway? I thought originally I could just delete the goal after uploading to my garmin device (other manufacturers available 🤗), however from recall the goal once set still appears on all my followers dashboard (highly irritating). The only way I get the goal to be private is by losing all followers first and making everything private, i then use the feature nicely and set up a non premium account which I transfer all activities too one by one afterwards. I then re follow all my strava buddies and hope they do that back to me. A lot of hassle but feasible?
