Ability to Set Private Goals

I would like to have a "private/public" option for goals.  When I set goals I don't necessarily want anyone else to be able to see them.  Having goals is part of my training which I prefer not to share.

    I'm sorry everyone, this feature request is not planned and is not currently being considered.

    We have the difficult task of prioritizing the work that can be done at Strava to build new features and functionality with our current engineering resources. Our focus at the moment is on social features. So the ability to set a private goal has not been chosen for development.

    However, please do not lose hope or consider this discussion a waste of time. I report on trending topics in our community monthly, and if this topic continues to gain traction among our members then it is more likely to be considered at a future time. Thanks.

  • I agree with Charles completely.   There are quite a few very valid reasons why a member might not want their goal(s) to be displayed publicly.  This should be an obvious, no brainer, and I would guess it's a feature that Strava can add quite easily.

  • I agree. I like the feature to set segment goals but I don't like it that I cant make them private. I tend to use a basic excel file instead now.

  • Agreed, its feels like bragging posting these. No need for others to see this info at all. Seems a strange decision to me

  • I am sure this view is shared by many others. Come on Strava, enable the feature so that we can keep our goals to ourselves - not "someday", but now. Thanks!

  • Elle, you must be joking? Two years have passed since this request was originally posted.

    Setting a Training Goal for myself is PERSONAL and there is not reason why I would want to broadcast it to all my followers. This is an issue that needs to be addressed A.S.A.P (but with 2 yrs. gone) we can forget about that, can't we?

    Please MAKE THIS HAPPEN

  • +1 from me.

    Due to the lack of personal privacy and desire for competitive advantage I cannot use any of Strava Premiums goal features.

    In this light I would encourage Strava to look more closely at the utilization of this feature among premium users.

    For example, I am following 63 people, 40 are premium users. While most use the weekly mileage goal, I have only ever seen 3 use training and segment goals in two years of Strava use.

    I understand that Strava may view the current compulsory follower notifications as a form of advertising for Premium, but please check your stats on this.

    Fortunately I got a 90 day Premium free trial with my Garmin 520 so at least this hasn't been a rude awakening.

    If this is remedied within 88 days I will me more than happy to keep my subscription and use the full features.

  • There should absolutely be an option to make goals private!  I don't want to share my goals so I keep them off Strava, but I've just bought the Garmin Edge 520 and am using live segments on solo rides.  For those unfamiliar, your current effort is compared against a 'target'.  That target is determined in this order:

    1) Strava goal if you have one.

    2) If no goal, the person of either gender that you are following who's ahead of you on the leaderboard.  If you're the KoM / QoM it uses that time.

    On the Garmin Edge 520, you can go into each segment that is on your unit and change the 'target' from either of these to your PR or the KoM / QoM, but you can't choose from anything else or enter a goal time!  So, if you want a goal time, you basically have to use Strava goals, but you can't make them private!

  • It's been two years, can we please get this! Otherwise features are being wasted and you don't want to waste your customers money do you?

  • Simon, thanks, but what a horrible work-around. I just stopped setting all goals two years ago. They are worthless when broadcast to all my followers. Stupid move Strava. You have the fix, change the default to PRIVATE, nobody wants their goals to be PUBLIC. Perhaps we should follow "George Deacon" and LEAVE PREMIUM until this is fixed?

  • Has this happened yet?  I do not want everyone to see my goals.

  • Goals should have a private option. They are personal and sometimes even aggressive in the sense that you want to beat a friend. I have resorted to keeping paper notes because Strava does not allow this.

  • Yep Strava, its time to give us the option of making our goals private or public. I like to set goals but I really don't want to tell everyone I have these goals.

  • Yes, this option is definitively necessary.

  • Oh come on Strava - this thread is ancient and the fix is easy - you've finally promised to look at filtering all those stupid challenge notifications out of peoples feeds. Surely you can add a simple public/private setting for goals????? I'm done with Premium until you start listening to your users.

  • Please reconsider the option for private goals. The reason I don't set Strava goals is because they are public.

  • I am one of the oldest in my riding group, and am trying to get back in shape. After I set a goal for a popular climb, I was a bit shocked to see my (lame by comparison) goal was broadcast to everyone. Thanks, Strava, that sucked! I am very impressed by my Wahoo Elemnt after using Garmin for years, super psyched about the live segments to hopefully compete against my own PRs, but after finding thisis a long standing problem/request, Strava is clearly not responsive like Wahoo is to their users.

  • So I just deleted all my goals - will wait for Strava to implement privacy until I bother with them again.

    This really is an epic fail own behalf of strava - as a developer myself this should not be hard to implement on top of existing logic. Here's some pseudo code to get you started:

    class Goal {

        boolean isPublic;

        ....

    }

    void renderGoals(List<Goal> goals) {

      foreach (goal : goals) {

            if (goal.isPublic) {

                renderGoal();

            }

        }

    }

    Hope this helps Strava !!! Ping me if you'd like any other pointers

  • I finding it shocking that personal goals are displayed to all my followers.

    This was raised in 2014 and it's now 2019 !!!!!!!!

    I'm reasonably new to Summit and can only assume none of my followers use goals as I've never seen their goals posted.

    This is great training option which is probably being avoided by many members.

    YOU CAN DO THIS STRAVA, DIG DEEP, BE MENTALLY STRONG AND KEEP BELIEVING.  Or you could set yourself a goal..

  • Just signed up to Summit and added a goal for a couple of segments, was then shocked to see that they had been posted in the feed for all to see!

    Googled to see if there was a way I could make them private and came across this thread.  I cannot believe that this feature is not possible on Strava, as others have commented, seems a no-brainer. That it has been an issue for 5 years is simply astonishing.  Seriously don't understand why this is the case.

    Makes the whole Goal feature pointless - I wont now be using it.  There may be goals that I want to share, but most I would like to keep to myself thank you very much.

    Strava, if you do read these posts, please fix.

  • This seems like an easy fix, right? All you need is a toggle for the user in the code for private/public. A half days work to keep your paying users happy....

  • I too need this option to make better use of my training plans and garmin 820 without showing the whole world where my ambitions are. Surely this should be a rather low hanging fruit for your talented developers?

  • Dear Strava Community Moderator,

    Having been a Premium Member for 2 years now, I think I have to agree with Juan (above) that after three years of asking for this feature, that NOBODY at Strava really cares about what its membership desires in the way of new features & improvements (even simple ones like this "private option" on our goals or the "reverse route option" on Course Creation. Apparently this only a forum for venting our frustrations and not a source for suggested improvements which will benefit the membership to be implemented in the near future. It's too bad, but it looks like we all need to look elsewhere for a social/network for our physical activities which actually listens to it's membership and responds. (I am open to suggestions)
