Make Activities Private by Default

When activity is created, it is by default public. I have to go edit it to make it private. I would love the option to set it the other way around. So it would be by default private and public will be only those I explicitly choose to be.

  • I'd like to see this feature and woudn't mind paying for it.

There's not much point making a ride private AFTER it has been publicly uploaded to Strava - that's not really private at all. Like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted...

  • Seems like they don't care? C'mon I'm sure to implement this costs less than the annual premium membership that I've cancelled this year because of this issue. Are we too few? Maybe make a pool to count interest? The whole web moving towards privacy management and strava stuck in orkut era..

  • I would love to have this feature too!  I'm a premium member and this is something that is important to me.

  • Me too.  Aside from hiding my poor running performance from my cycling buddies, commutes just clutter up the activity feed.  You want to record them to maintain accurate totals but they shouldn't be in the activity feed unless specifically requested.

Interesting that there has been no comment from Strava on this thread in all this time...

  • I have submitted a support request with the specifics of what is wrong and a some potential technical solutions on how to handle it and this is the only response I received (as well as my ticket being closed with no solution) - I underlined the important text:

    Hello,

Sorry for the trouble. We are currently in the process of reviewing The different privacy options on Strava. Please accept my sincere apologies and we appreciate your patience in the matter. I hope you have a wonderful day and keep up the great work.

    Best,
    Rudolph
    Strava Support Team

What I read into this is they are figuring out how to monetize and work enhanced privacy settings / behavior into premium plans.

  • @Jason, no monetizing of our privacy features on the table! I stand by Rudolph's response, we are reviewing our current privacy features in preparation for improving this area of our product.

I think this is a great suggestion to consider. It adds simple functionality to our current privacy settings and clearly there is support here. Please keep in mind that we cannot solve these problems overnight, but know that your voice is heard and will be included in our internal discussion. Thanks!

  • I whould like to get this feature too. It cost nothing to code that... It´s just a flag with a default value !
As a software developer, I can ´t belive it´s not yet released!

  • @Elle Anderson, I created this thread cca 15 months ago. so you made me smile with you comment: "we cannot solve these problems overnight".

Anyway: I imagine it like this: In setting, there would be option "I want my activities private by default" and it would be set to FALSE. And people like me would go there and change it to TRUE. And than every new activitiy (no matter the source (synchronized from garmin, movescount or created manualy) would have that PRIVATE flag set to true. I imagine whole programing and testing could take 1hour to 5 days. And you clearly see people want it. So I presume you don't. And it is understandable. Strava is posing more like social network than serious sport tool. Am I right?

  • Cannot believe after all this time that it has been acknowledged by someone at Strava as a legitimate request.

Same as Michal, I believe the issue is not a software ability one but more of a philosophical one. Strava is built on "community" and privacy settings are a direct opposition to that. I think that the decision to act on this needs high backing - hence the lack of any forward motion on this issue so far....

What I do think is that allowing this default setting would enhance Strava and allow a wider embracing of it for the people who aren't elite or necessarily improving. For those that like to use the tools and see the benefit of the enhanced tools of the paid membership, some are being put off by publicity....

However the innumerous who use strava for free and wish to promote their wonderful achievements or otherwise are rewarded with publicity....

To be frank, it's just not British

We like anonymity - let us have it!!!!

Michal - you make a very good point. 15 months is a long time for this request to be processed and is certainly not 'overnight'.

After 2 years of being a premium member I have just cancelled my membership. One of the things I really admired about Strava was that they seemed to listen to users and be driven by their needs. Perhaps now people need to make their voice known financially.

  • I also hope we'll see this in the near future and I really hope that reason behind it is not the number of logins/page views they get (because we always have to login and make activities private). Imagine what a decrease in traffic they would have... On the other side they would even save some electricity. :)

The point is that it shouldn't take more than 1 year to implement, since it's just a single initial condition that needs to be changed (inside code or DB)...

  • I joined Strava two days ago. Noticed this obvious flaw in the service. Found this thread which shows this will not be fixed. I am exiting Strava and will not look back. I suggest you all do the same!

  • I cannot believe this hasn't been implemented yet. This is literally a 30 second fix. I can say this confidently as a software engineer. If they are worried about people logging in, setting the default to private would actually drive more people to the site, not less. Come on Strava get it together!

  • Yet another mostly-commuter here.

I don't want to spam my activity feed with commutes, but still, bragging that I've managed to take the bike rather than driving or taking the metro would encourage me. So commutes could be shown in a summarized way, e.g. "John Doe commuted N days in a row, for a total of X km" (no map, no hours). Achievements could be public, provided they show the related segment only and not the whole commute ride. Lots of creative solutions are possible…

  • I was just going through my settings one last time to see if it has been updated before I delete my account and IT HAS.  This feature is now enabled under privacy settings to make all rides private by default.  THANK YOU STRAVA!!!

  • Genuinely thought Strava would not implement this feature. Further new features are selecting the radius for your privacy zones, disappearing from Strava Labs FlyBy and opting out of the heatmap. Kudos for this Strava!

  • This feature is not working for me.  I have "Make Private" checked, but when I upload my workout through the strava api v3 uploads page, it shows up as public.  This happens regardless of my setting private=1 during the upload.

  • Wow!  Wow? Wow.  It's been two years since this post was created and I don't think they're (Strava) is going to fix this issue.  I'm a new user to Strava and love the interface and features EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT IT POSTS PUBLICLY...AUTOMATICALLY.  IT AUTOMATICALLY POSTS PUBLICLY!  YOU CAN'T TURN IT OFF.  I'm not yelling with the caps, I'm emphasizing.  As an open source developer I can't guess it's probably a Boolean field that is either true or false (0 or 1).  Hmmm, I wonder is their are any alternatives to Strava...

  • Have you checked your settings using strava on a computer? 'Private by default' has been working perfectly for me since it was introduced a while back. (Syncing with Garmin Connect and uploading via Perfpro Analyzer)

  • I'm not using my computer, I'm using my phone.  There is no setting on the phone app that allows me to change this setting.  I see that the setting is available on the website via a browser and I have it checked.  Here's more info for you:
