Strava Challenges for Indoor Training

It would be awesome to have challenges that are for training rides only I.e. No manual rides and not real rides. I'm currently injured at the moment and I'm sure lots of people are also. The restricts me from going out on rides but I can sit on my trainer at home. For extra motivation during the tough times of an injury it would be awesome to have TRAINING CHALLENGES.

  • Personally I think it is ridiculous that there is no way to cater for those of us who are unable to cycle outdoors for whatever reason. Mine is medical, and a static trainer is the only way to get the miles in. Strava is supposed to be encouraging people to ride, putting this restriction is a disincentive, and is discriminatory.

  • Surely the answer is simple? If the log includes absolutely no change in altitude then it's an indoor ride? Unless folks are going to carry their bike up and down stairs of course

  • Personal i have let my pro membership run out as i also now have medical conditions that prevent me from cycling outdoors and was not getting any value from the pro membership.

  • There are all sorts of reasons for training indoors and it is a real shame that those of us that do use turbo trainers do not have access to challenges.  On a turbo trainer you can rack up miles and elevation why can't these count towards challenges?

If it is because these are not considered "real" activity, then strava could have separate turbo challenges for turbo cyclists.  Come on strava be tech friendly....

  • I agree, whilst I appreciate somewhat, not including virtual rides into the real world riding challenges due to the perceived differences in effort, how difficult would it be to have the same challenges added for virtual rides only?

  • Due to work hours i'm not able to ride many  km's outside during the winter season but i do quite some workout on the trainer. It's pretty frustrating that those km's / miles aren't taken into account for challenges etc.

If you don't want to spoil the real challenges just create some pure for indoor. I also saw you integrated Zwift into Strava. So you have a way to detect if it's a Zwift ride or not. So having a Zwift challenge should be possible.  And if you don't want to spoil the cycling stats, including and indoor cycling category (like you have now additionally swimming/running) could also be a solution

I'm using Strava quite for some time now and still have the feeling that you don't tend to have things for the average/beginner rider. Only hardcore seems to get the real focus. I'm riding 250km - 300km a week now (most of it indoor due to work) and there's nothing rewarding in Strava. Please have a look at this and try to fill up this gap in some way !

Tnx for reading and considering this

  • I just completed a 101 km ride on Zwift and was disappointed to see that it doesn't count towards a century on Strava. There is current research from the University of Nebraska that suggests that one hour of indoor training is the equivalent of an hour and 15 minutes of outdoor training. (Ihttp://mobile.journals.lww.com/nsca-jscr/_layouts/oaks.journals.mobile/articleviewer.aspx?year=2014&issue=08000&article=00029#ath) it was a brutal workout, and as a new subscriber in frozen Edmonton I literally cannot ride outdoors for 100 km's as it is too cold and very difficult to bike in the snow. That doesn't stop me from hopping on my fat bike and spending two hours to go 30 K, but I come back really really cold. I wish you would make it reasonable for people to self select that they have completed a 100 km challenge, and have outdoor data, or appropriate indoor data to prove it.

  • In northern country where outside ride are not possible in winter, Virtual training is one way to keep the form.  Challenge should include Virtual training done on smart trainer like KICKR, CYCLOPS, TACX where power is set by the route and not by the individual.

  • I am also in this boat due to my work and family situation the only time I can workout is in the middle of the night from 2AM-7AM. I live in Colorado and trying to train for multiple Ironman races I can only utilize my indoor Kickr trainer where I average 150 miles\wk . It's very disappointing for us that train indoors on trainers that our times and miles are not include in the cycling challenges.

  • I forgot to add this would be also for treadmill runs where I use the iFIT systems where I can do virtual runs. Training indoors is as much training as outside and there should be challenges for indoor training folks. Where indoor bike trainers and treadmills are times and miles would be acceptable but no manual inputs would be acceptable. Just my 2 cents.

  • With modern trainers now interacting with maps to make training more realistic, the distinction is becoming more blurred. I use a Proform TdF trainer in winter and since just recently I can to save the workouts in a Strava compatible format, the result being that some spurious KOMs have appeared which seem to have annoyed some people as they got flagged. Should I mark these rides "private" or not?

  • By all means lets have some indoor challenges; but keep them separate from the regular challenges.

If you chose to ride indoors, fair enough; but 100k in your living room with the central heating on is hardly comparable to riding 100k in lashing wind and rain. Lets not pretend otherwise

Glen's original suggestion - (separate) Virtual Training Challenges - makes a lot of sense.
