  • Strava on the Apple Watch worked fine until you incorporated the HR Monitor and made it mandatory. Some of us don't need it. It DESTROYS the battery. I used to be able to run for hours and still have well over 60% battery left. Now, my watch cannot make it through a 20-25 mile run without dying. It's because the HR sensor is always on. I have it disabled, so it doesn't record.. but it stays on and kills my battery. Not sure how this has been so overlooked. You're crippling the device by doing this.

  • I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, as all/most of the main features seem to work as advertised. I can start/pause/stop workouts completely from the watch - no phone intervention necessary. I can also switch from running to biking, as well as get HR data and haptic feedback (e.g. every kilometre), all without undue stress to the watch battery - I've been on multi-hour rides or nordic skis, and the watch still lasts until I go to bed.

    Things I'd like to see:

    1) Customization of which fields are shown on watch face

    2) Writing of Strava data to the Apple iOS "Activity" app as a "workout"

    3) Lack of duplication of workout data in the Apple iOS  "Health" app - Over time, I find that previous workouts get cloned - sometimes many-fold - though I'm now seeing (knock on wood) better behaviour by resorting the priority of sources for a particular "data card" in the Health app

    4) On a larger scale, and not watch-specific, the ability to "choose your favourite three sports" (e.g. Run/Bike/Ski as opposed to Run/Bike/Swim).

Otherwise, keep up the great work guys!!

  • Please improve the battery usage of for the heart monitor of the apple watch app - so many great features, but this really kills the usefulness. Thanks.

  • Hi Ben Tsui (or someone else who knows),

How did you to manage to get haptic feedback for every kilometer. I tried everything, but I didn't succeed. Which settings do you use?

    Best regards,

    Gert

  • 1) please add more activity options! I cross train many activities, but Strava only lets me select running or biking. I would love to see hiking, yoga, walking, INDOOR RUN/bike, weight training, "other" etc. Otherwise this app only captures a portion of my workouts. Bummer! Especially need to be able to launch these activities from Apple Watch.

    2) Apple Watch app: need ability to turn off GPS for indoor activities or for when we don't want to drain the phone battery running GPS. Essential feature!

  • Hi there,

I recently updated to a Premium membership thinking that it would allow me to see current speed on the Apple Watch as opposed to just average speed, however it did not change.  It would be great if you could make this update to the Apple Watch app so that you can view current speed which, a lot of the time, is much more informative while you are riding than average speed which you may want to look at after the ride.

I also have a very hard time getting the heart rate data to work properly.  Most of the time when I look at the watch it doesn't have a reading, and when I view the heart rate data after a workout there are huge chunks of time where it seems no data is being recorded.

Thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback.

    Kyle

  • I would love to be able to use the Apple Watch app in an indoor mode. I run a lot on the treadmill, and would like to have the watch track my heart rate and estimated distance and save to Strava, with a step to input the actual distance from the treadmill on/after save.

  • Hi all,

I am having issues similar to others (e.g. Gert).

I run with a Wahoo TIKR HR band. I've been using this combo (iPhone, Strava App and Wahoo) for nearly a couple of years with no issues. The moment I added the Apple Watch into the combo, I started having HR reporting issues.

I have the impression Strava, when started from the Apple Watch, still keeps collecting HR data from the watch sensors. Which, BTW, are not as good as the HR band in my experience. I typically have wrong HR data for the first km. But recently (after resetting completely the watch after the last OS update) HR is completely screwed up.

    I did this test:

     - Run a 5K with Watch+iPhone, but removing the HR band (Wahoo). The HR data came from the watch and are completely wrong. The run can be seen here: https://www.strava.com/activities/534169140

    - Run a 10K using the complete combo (Apple Watch, Wahoo HR band, iPhone) and starting the App from the watch. The HR data are screwed up, please see here: https://www.strava.com/activities/530629850

     - Run a 10K not starting nor using the App on the watch (and check if I had any issue with the HR band, like batteries. All good as it used to be, data here: https://www.strava.com/activities/535488491

I have to say this is very annoying. Very likely my Apple Watch is gonna fly in the trash bin and I am gonna revert back to my standard sport watch. A pity cause starting and stopping the activities from the watch can be handy. But I want to see reliable HR data reported to use it.

Gert - I did nothing to set this up. I though it was default behaviour. I get haptic feedback on the watch every time it posts a new split, which seems to be every kilometre.

  • In no particular order:

    1.  Improve the updating.  You can only hold the watch in view mode for a second before it becomes difficult to run  or worse ride.  Distance pace and heart rate all lag.  It occasionally will show some outdated information, which is better than nothing.  But when it does not update over the course of the next mile or 2, it's useless.

    2.  General connection.  Seems to lose connection often and generally more often the longer the run or ride.  Symptoms are inability to see updates on the watch, actions requested on the watch going no where.

    3.  Knowing that the connection is terrible, update the watch app so that user can tell each request has been received, so he can stop hitting the stop button over and over wondering what is going on.

    4.  Grab heart rate from the watch when using the phone app even if the watch app is not on.

  • I'm having lots of frustration with my watch app. It often will get stuck trying to finish a ride. It frequently doesn't start a ride when I click start, or it starts and immediately pause a the ride. I've lost data for a lot of my rides because of this. I also find it will randomly start rides, even when I'm not wearing the watch. I hear "starting ride" from my phone, unprompted. My activity feed is cluttered by 0 mile rides. I hope these bugs can get better. There's so much promise with this app, but the execution has been underwhelming.

  • Strava has never opened on apple watch. Just infinite loading and it force quits

    I've tried:

Deleting and reinstalling strava on both watch and iphone.

Unpairing and repairing phone and watch.

Leaving strava open while trying to open it on watch.

Trading in my watch for a new watch at the apple store.

  • Is the Apple Watch Strava-App able to show cadence and average speed?

  • I recently noticed that when i use Apple Watch HR app to show HR before i use strava i get more accurate HR in strava and it is monitorem from the very begining of the run. Unfortunately the First Km issue is still there. Last run is 13 min for first km and belive me i didn't crawl.

    https://www.strava.com/activities/558451655

I open strava on the Watch from shortcut menu (slide from bottom like native HR) and it shows me detali every time i bend my hand. The hepatic info works only when after i start the run i minimize app with crown.

Both iPhone and Watch have latest iOS and Strava.

  • I did a run today, started from the watch, and the first mile was correct! I wonder if it was something they fixed on the server?

  • I also have problems with the stava apple watch app.  Frequently, when I start it, i get the "dancing dots" and it never gets to the "start" screen.  Or it will get to the start screen, then I press "start" and and get the dancing dots for a long time - eventually it will tell me to "check for prompts" on my phone - of course there aren't any.

Does anyone from strava check these forums??

  • I tried out the live segments on the watch last night and noticed every time a segment finished the strava app would close. When I looked at the watch it was back to the watch face instead of strava which was slightly annoying!

  • For all these reasons, compounded by the fact that tech support is completely useless, I cancelled my Premium subscription. Maybe if they fix some of these problems, I'll re-consider giving them my money. Right now we can't even get them to acknowledge them.

  • I have an open issue with them on incorrect splits for the first mile when starting the activity from the apple watch. Here is their latest update:

"No engineer has been assigned to the matter as of yet. It will likely be some time before it gets some attention due to the low number of users effected. Unfortunately, that's the state of things for now. Any updates can be sent to you directly."

  • Always works fine for me when running. I can start/pause/end without issue.

Haven't tested it for cycling yet, as I tend to use the iPhone itself as I use the navigation/maps part of it.

  • I do not quite understand heart frequency data with apple watch. one very good thing, is that you now have a MUCH better response that shows data within 2 seconds when lifting the wrist. BUT whilhaving around the same HF while running, the values shown AFTERWARDS online vary from low to high A LOT! And I can not understand why they should, running on a flat area, with a pace that does not fit to frequency either. Anyone with the same issues?

  • This has been mentioned in the past but the only critical functionality that I see which is missing is the ability to take a manual lap. It would be great if one of the physical buttons could do that but a force touch would also work if need be. Doing a workout like 400 repeats is impossible to accurately record in the current app.

  • Feature suggestion. Would it possible to allow the crown to control the music volume whilst using the watch app?

  • I was able to use strava on my watch earlier in the year, however, not for the last few months.  I am having the same issues as Audrey Axt. Usually, it won't start at all or I get an error: Check Strava on your iPhone for prompts. (Of which there are none.) Once in a while I can start strava up from the watch, however, the strava display won't appear on the watch.  So much for that.

  • Hi Jeremy

Since the 15/8 update Strava is now running fine on my AW with iPhone 5c, except that the display will only show split pace - can this not be toggled to show average pace or current pace, or speed? On the strava.com/apple-watch site one of the photos clearly shows the watch in Recording mode with "AVG 15.6MPH". How can I change this? (All other running apps offer this flexibility, even the Apple Watch workout app, so I presume Strava does too).

    Thanks

    Colin

  • p.s. actually I am also having the "1st split" problem.

On yesterday's run the GPS map looks like a drunk staggering back and forward across the road for the first 100m! And the pace was 4.30/km whereas I was running at about 5.30/km.....

  • Colin Smith,

i had the same problem with first split when i start activity with AW. Try to use Apple Map on the AW. Wait for the position fix and then go to Strava and start activity. That works for me. Strava said that they are aware of the problem and working on it.

  • I continue to be massively frustrated by the inconsistency of the sync between the watch and the phone.

If I start my run or ride on my watch, then it starts the app on phone automatically. If I try it the other way around, the session does not start on the watch.

When I am running and glance at my watch to see my pace times, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I am forced to go through several taps to get back to the app on the phone and even then, it shuts off after that instance.

If I turn on Strava on my watch I want it to take precedence on the watch. Not have it disappear.

Even when the watch shows data at a glance while running, this seems to change of it's own accord. I have had four hour runs/rides where the app stops functioning on the phone mid-session and I can't get the information I want because the touch screen doesn't work with sweat on my fingers. The app on the phone switches from showing pace for the last kilometre to showing the time.

The app fails to pick up the heart rate data from the watch about 25% of the time, often only recording part of a session.

The app on the watch looks like it is starting so I set off on my run or ride only to discover afterwards it turned itself off.

FIX THE FUNCTIONALITY YOU HAVE STRAVA. Stop messing about with new functionality like Beacons until you have everything else working. Right now Strava on the Apple Watch is a huge disappointment.

  • I just finished a ride on my watch, yet it didn't upload. Why? Also, strava app on iPhone automatically starts a ride when I open it. How can I prevent that?
