Alpine ski activities should report vertical descent

There are a couple of threads about this already in the "New Feature Ideas" forum, but this really should be counted as a bug. In alpine ski activities, the elevation stat should be descent, not ascent. It's silly to call an activity "Alpine Ski" and then report data that is totally irrelevant to any alpine skier. This should be a trivial fix and would make Strava much more useful for this type of activity.

Thanks all, Alpine Ski and Snowboards activities will now show vertical descent in the Elevation Gain field. This is only future uploads (not retroactive) and will be available for devices that record FIT files and have a ski or snowboard sport selection when recording.

  • To follow up and second this, when using ski mode on my garmin device, it auto-pauses the lift rides and then resumes when you begin skiing downhill again. Because of this (being paused while ascending) there is no elevation data displayed for the activity (since there was "no" ascent, even though there was lots of descent!).

    Here is an example: https://www.strava.com/activities/792643076

Vertical descent has always been the focal metric for downhill (Alpine) skiing; linear distance is somewhat irrelevant. Ascent is useful for backcountry and nordic activities.

Is it possible for Strava to display this?

    Thanks,
    Nate

  • Third to this comment, Elle.  Changing it, presumably, would remove the elevation gained by mechanical means from the equation and only show elevation gained by hard work and big legs.  Thats what we are all after in the end, eh?

Even though it is a trivial thing to mark it descent and not ascent, one week long ski trip trickles into my profile metrics and throws the "elevation" graph completely out of whack for the whole year.  I am proud of my backcountry and XC elevation, so if you earned your turns it should count there.   Thanks for your consideration

  • The same would be very needed for Snowboarding.

BTW when recording with the Garmin device like Nate describes it seems to work for Alpine Skiing. I get 0 elevation gain. But it does not work when switching this to snowboarding.

  • I enthusiastically endorse this feature. Many of my cycling friends on Strava are also alpine skiers, but they switch to the Ski Tracks app because Strava doesn't track elevation properly. Even worse it makes a mess of elevation data gathered on the bike. Nothing against the Ski Tracks app (and definitely worth looking at for feature ideas) but it doesn't have any community features, which is a huge part of the Strava experience. Furthermore, I would much rather track all of my fitness activities in one place, like Strava!

  • How do we go about requesting that this feature be added for Alpine ski! I love using Strava but would like all my activities properly recorded.

  • Any new information regarding this being looked into?

  • Not sure, it is frustrating as the stats screw up my cycling elevation gain for the rest of the year.

  • Thanks, Elle!

Will it now ignore the elevation gain in your activity summary as well?

  • Good timing... just heading out to the slopes at Sugar Bowl (Norden, CA). I’m going to turn Strava right now. Hope it works on my iPhone. I will be reporting back! (Hopefully Strava maintains a separate category for Alpine skiing so I can see my total vertical descent for a week or a month or the whole season. If it just adds to my bike rides it’s not going to be very useful.)

  • Now it includes the skied descent as elevation gain for the week/month bar charts.  I only want to know elevation gained through my own effort, not by going up a lift!

  • Seems not working, at least in French... The activity below was uploaded as "alpine skiing" from a Fenix 3, and shows positive elevation:
