Angry about dropping support for Wahoo RFLKT

I just want to express how angry I am about Strava dropping support for the RFLKT.

One of the reasons to pay for a premium Strava membership is the live segments. If we have to use the Wahoo app to track our rides, I am not getting live segments, and I'm not getting what I pay for.

Its really annoying that you would REMOVE a feature. Especially one that is working perfectly fine.

I guess I am going to have to avoid updating my Strava app as long as possible.

  • I agree. My phone auto-updates. I woke up this morning to their "Sadly..." message.

  • I agree with you.

Seems that only Garmin will team with Strava.

A Shame, as RFLKT worked seamless.

  • Agree! This really makes me mad. Had the same problem this morning. Very poor customer support. Now my choices are forget Strava, not have info on my bars or try to use Wahoo app and upload to Strava? All bad choices.

  • I'd like to echo the sentiments of others, I am incredibly angry and frustrated that support for the RFLKT was unceremoniously dropped. Boneheaded move by Strava. Also: fuck Garmin.

  • Please could somebody from the Strava team respond to our question? What was the reason to drop RFLKT support.

Many cyclist bought a RFLKT because it works with the Strava apps seamlessly. I discovered this on my last Sunday morning ride and did not have cadence displayed.

Looking forward to a response from Strava!

  • I'm not happy about this either.

I assume their plan for the RFLKT veered with the release of the Wahoo Elemnt.

Strava has made them selves into a social site and has fallen behind the pack as far as an activity recording app.

  • This is very annoying as I have updated my Starva app and now rflkt won't show Starva data please can Starva explain why this has been changed?

  • Ditto! I'm really pissed off. And to top it off, only a few days before did I upgrade to Strava Premium for the next year!!!

  • We understand your frustration, and when we made this decision we knew it would negatively affect a portion of our user base who use the Wahoo RFLKT(+) directly with Strava.

We made this decision believing that Wahoo Fitness is able to provide a great recording experience with the RFLKT(+), and that the sync from Wahoo Fitness to Strava is easy to set up and works almost immediately after a recording is finished.

The one use-case we did not anticipate, is the sub-set of RFLKT(+) users who record with both the Premium version of the Strava mobile app and RFLKT on their handlebars, thus utilizing both the RFLKT and Strava Live Segments concurrently. All other Premium features remain accessible when recording with Wahoo Fitness and syncing the data to Strava.

Since removing support for the RFLKT, we've been able to re-allocate resources and make updates to how other bluetooth devices connect with Strava, and as a result have seen a significant decrease in connection errors with other Strava-compatible accessories.

We hope you can find a way to continue using both your RFLKT(+) and Strava. As always, let us know what feedback you have for us, specifically with the Wahoo Fitness workaround.

  • Found out the hard way about this last night after I updated to get the new beacon feature this really stinks I am a premium member for a little while not sure if I will renew as this was my favorite feature maybe I should have paid attention to the support pages more  is there any way to down grade the app to get the feature back?

  • When's does support for Wahoos ELEMNT end?
The issue now is that I need use beacon fwith the Strava app and record with the wahoo app so I can use the RfLKT.  I upload the wahoo file to strava, but I must  delete the Strava file to keep the wahoo file b/c the wahoo file has the sensor data. Using two apps drains the phone battery. I do think the wahoo app is tons better than the Strava app as there are much fewer dropped connections and the screen settings are more flexible.  But after this I'm worried strava is picking Garmin as the winner and may drop live segment (or even cross platform uploading) from other devices.  This particularly impacts the decision to purchase the wahoo elemnt.

  • Elle,

You have forgotten those of us that use beacon. I just purchased a RFLKT so that I could get my phone off my bars, save battery, and actually have a readable screen in bright sunlight. Now it seems I have wasted my money. Sure I could use the Wahoo app and upload to Strava, but I have gotten used to the extra security of beacon and the peace of mind that it offers my wife.

Frankly, dropping support is a cop-out. Hire a few more developers if you feel like you are overworked. What exactly is my premium subscription paying for?

If it takes you a little longer to get it done, so be it. Don't just leave people stranded without a workable solution. Very disappointing...

  • Can Strava buy back my RFLKT since I bought it in the first place to use with Strava?

  • Strava - You lie on the reasons - Strava already worked with the Wahoo device and you took it out of Strava in an "update" (it should have been called a downgrade because it took away a feature I had).

And then you closed comments on most pages announcing the removal and word the announcement in a dirty way that it it just needed resources to add support (for it when it worked for years and someone approved resources to remove it from being supported).

Dirty on both counts and you know it. Strava upper management needs to step up and just say it worked and you took out support and unlock comments on the announcement page. Only makes people madder.

Hello, I just read the following from Strava and I could not comment on the post so I am starting a new thread on the following:

"Sadly, we are dropping support for Wahoo RFLKT/RLFKT+, the Magellan Echo, and the Timex Run x50 in the next release of the iPhone app."

I bet either Wahoo didn't pay Strava or Strava didn't pay Wahoo. Or maybe it was some other tiff which caused Strava to take out the code supporting my Wahoo Rflkt.

However, the reason I cancelled my premium membership months ago when you did this (I urge others to do the same) is because you were sneaky about it.  Put your name on it Strava.  Quit closing comments on the topic and note the removal in the app - it would only take a line on the device screen where my Wahoo Rflkt was listed, and say "We are sorry support for Wahoo Rflkt removed" or something along those lines. Hiding it from me after an update was completely disgusting behavior.

And now I can't trust Strava with the blanket "Ok, it is fine to update the app" now I have to think, hmmm, do I trust this new release of Strava or did they take something out?

I had such a high regard for both companies I am simply disgusted with whatever tiff caused this.

  • I have been using the Wahoo app and uploading my data to Strava after the fact. Strava used to be the center of my ride. It's now more of an afterthought.

  • This is annoying, but such is life - I've been using a Rflkt+ with the Wahoo app and uploading after the fact for ages (and also a Magellan Echo, for which support has also been dropped, since the beginning of 2016). I've also been using Find My Friends on the iPhone to let my Better Half know where I am since way before Beacon came on the scene. This isn't a deal breaker for me at all. What is annoying is the fact that over the last month, my uploads from Wahoo to Strava have not been playing nicely - I do the same commute every day, 15 miles (to the nearest .1) on Wahoo every time, but Strava shows it as anything between 14 and 15, and the active time varies from the app by up to a minute - where'd my missing miles an minutes go? Would love to know what's changed, as it used to be soooo close...

  • Agreed. There are a lot of riders who use the Wahoo Rflkt who need Strava support. Come on Strava, bring back the support for the Rflkt!

  • I just downgrade my membership ... And I'm not going to buy a Garmin!! The RFLkT do almost the same for a fraction of the cost!

  • The answer seems obvious folks; Strava is gearing up to sell itself to Garmin and so they drop support for all the competing devices. Garmin doesn't want to support the competition. Watch for the announcement of the sale next quarter.

  • Just got one of these units and was disappointed to find out this once worked together and now doesn't. The Wahoo App has been dropping info/ gps far more often then the Strava App does. Rather just stick with one app - same reason I don't really want a Garmin.

Hopefully if enough people keep commenting on this they will bring it back, even if this technology is now "dated".

  • Just adding my bits of anger on this. Another subscription that'll be lost because of this poor judgement decision. I hope the subvention from Garmin is providing enough stream to cover these losses.

  • I use Cyclemeter as it is very configurable and plays very well with Wahoo sensors and in particular the RFLKT. It uploads results to Strava automatically so I can analyse segments etc. I don't use any if the live Strava features and won't until it supports as many Bluetooth devices as Cyclemeter.

  • I was considering premium. But seeing " Stravaperspective". I wont. Strava free i will use. But the customer is paying the annual fee but Strava is paying attention to other voices and making excuses.

  • I use Cyclemeter Elite, with the Wahoo sensors and RFLKT   it's the way to go if your not to worried about the live segments, it gives way more info then Strava does, Loads to Strava with no problems and can be used with RFLKT with out any pairing issues. This is pretty much my go to cycling app every time .

  • I learned the hard way that Abvio Cyclemeter elite only supports RFLKT on IOS devices, NOT android. Abvio support walked me through setup and then refunded my purchase. I tried this because the Wahoo fitness app has stopped working for me--it constantly crashes now.  Wahoo support has done nothing with a 2-month old ticket.

Since Strava does not support RFLKT either, Wahoo has successfully closed off all app support for this legacy device, leaving me to decide which new computer I shall buy. I also have the sensors and tickr heart monitor. I thought I might consider the Element Mini so I can still use my sensors, except the reviews are so bad for it that such a move seems foolish.

Wahoo, seems like the end of the road for us.
