Kitesurf distance in km instead of NM

Although distance while navigating on the water is traditionally measured in Nautical Miles, kitesurfing isn't exactly an activity in which we are doing any navigation. The number in km would be a lot more meaningful to pretty much any kiter I have spoken to about this so far.

I can't imagine this is a complex programming issue, as the same tracking data used for runs and rides is used to calculate kms too.

I'd be surprised to see any uproar from the kiting community if you guys silently switched to km; on the contrary, it'll most likely be universally applauded.

We've launched a fix today that removes nautical miles as the unit of measurement for kitesurfing activities on Strava. Instead, distance will now be displayed in miles/ km depending on the athlete's unit preference.

  • dito! My 30 km look like nothing in NM. Data on Movescount works proper, just the transfer to Strava...

  • Sometimes it shows nm, sometimes it shows km... For the same activity. Suunto shows km... What is up with this...

  • Agree, kiters measure distance in kms. Best example is if you look at the kite races, it's always advertised as kms.

  • Hi Katie

Great update and thanks you guys have listened to your users.

I checked the kite session I did yesterday and indeed the distance has changed from NM to km.

I do see that the speed is still in knots, which is not the speed unit we kitesurfers typically use. We use km/hr or MPH instead. If you'd be able to change that too, it would be perfect. Thx
