New post ideas

This is the place to suggest new post ideas.

As you know, we made some changes to our forum that will enable our small team to do a better job of engaging with you. One of these changes was controlling the creation of new posts and topics. If you cannot find a thread under which to post your comment, you can suggest a new post idea here.

Please make sure to 'upvote' the comments below that you'd like to see as individual topics.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • Hello!

With the growth of Plogging - picking up litter while jogging- it would be great to have a tracking feature allowing me to quantify all the litter I pick up, and challenge friends/run clubs. I think it's important to keep our runways clean, and would love to be able to compete with neighbors. Thanks!

  • I think it would be great if we could "donate" miles from a run to another Strava person.   I read stories all the time where runners are struggling with health, family, mental health and other issues and it cool to be able to donate (give them my miles) miles to them to show support.  For Example, I finish a run, post my activity on Strava, see a Donate Miles button on the page and click the button and then search for a Strava user.  Find the user, and click Donate.  This would be done as a show of support to replace hashtag.  Hashtags help with searching but donated miles can show a large amount of support in the community.

  • Can Strava provide turn by turn directions for an activity route such as bike, run or nordic ski?  I would love a turn by turn for some of the ride competitions or training routes.

  • I strongly suggest being able to switch the view of my past activities in the app to a simple one row list view with basic info (e.g. date, duration, length). I often find myself scrolling through dussins of commute rides and other to, for example, find my last time on the route I plan to repeat tomorrow, or looking for a specific ride I want to save as a route to share with a friend, etc.

  • I would like the ability to categorize my manual sport activity. In addition to running/cycling I do two martial arts judo and tkd, currently have to categorize them as a workout. But there is no way then to see time spent in each individual art.

A solution could be to have the workout category but then allow the user to tag it with their own category.

    Thanks!

  • Strava Events

I want to be able to discover a local events such as bike races. Currently event discovery is scattered amongst many places like clubs, facebook, random websites etc.

I would love to see a calendar and a few filters such as location, radius and the types of activities. When I discover the event I can indicate if I am going or interested. This should show up in a news feed so my friends/followers will be able to discover the event.

The events should allow creators to combine activity types, e.g.: triathlon and link/upload routes.
Logically events can be created within clubs or by the individuals. Anyway, only subscribers should be able to create the events. This will limit amount of spam.

Ideally activity types within events should have optional qualifications, for example average speed for bike riders or pace for runners.

Past events should have leaderboards - people who has responded that is going and set activity privacy to public. Activities should also have a reference to the event. To link activities you can use the start time, location and the route matching. You can even discover people who was there but forgot to join the event or heard about it from a different place.

Certain events can be set to be repetitive, e.g.: each Friday 6pm or first Saturday of the month.

Also, if event has qualifications and these match at least one of recent activities (past 30 days) this local event can be suggested in a home feed. E.g.: average bike speed is set to 25 km/h and the last activities had average moving speed 24.9km/h. I would also add a PRO option for professional athletes.

This should help people to find new friends and peers, grow athletic community because giving kudos to flybys feels creepy.

  • Strava has implemented some very complicated new features over the last year or so - super code intensive, data intensive, processor intensive, and many times not so value-to-the-user intensive. Yet we can't get multi-sports to display as one sport, and whenever it is suggested it is ignored. Trithlon, duathlon and aquathlon, from a training AND competing standpoint, have to be more popular than at least half dozen or so of the sports listed. Thanks for ignoring this suggestion once again.

Also, flipping to forum so the most recent suggestions show first is just common sense. Nobody is reading 30 pages of comments in order to express what's bugging them anyway.

    Thanks

  • Hi there. I use almost exclusively Strava to plan my rides. I would love to see the maximum gradients highlighted on a route and maybe the chance of putting into settings max 12% instead of Hilly or flat. Sometimes it suggests me routes with sectors with over 20% gradient. Thanks!

  • Privacy Controls > Additional Controls > Map Visibility > Hide the start and end points of activities that happen at a specific address. The 1 mile radius for this is too small for rural addresses, please increase the radius options

  • Need an option for sorting routes by distance, starting location, elevation.

I want the ability to sort my routes (Garmin has this option on their site). It will allow me to quickly find a route rather than scrolling through my 300+ routes. The reason that is important is because of organize four rides per week and I have to sort through over 300 routes that I have mapped to find a route that matches my criteria for distance, starting location, elevation.

  • Redline a road

I want be able to redline a section of road that has a bad surface ie:  pot holes, high traffic, under construction etc. It will allow me to look at my mapped routes quickly and figure out if I need to change it up for a safer ride. The reason that is important is because I have some routes that are up to 120 miles and if I can label a road then I can quickly and easily see that it needs to be tweaked in order to improve rider safety and enjoyment.

  • I think it would be interesting to have a checkbox on segment creation that requires the segment be started from a stop. I assume you could just require attempts to have the first few seconds below something like 2-5  km/h. This could help minimize dangerous routes where riders can ride through a stop sign or take a dangerous corner to maximize start speed on the segment. This would also provide a better test of the athletes performance on the segment.

  • I would like to solve an issue when a route requires to take a ferry - I would like to be able to select the part of an activity, which would then not count into distance, time, elevation, segments. This part of the activity could then be marked by dashed lines, for instance. This feature could also be used for areas, where you take a ski lift....

  • I would like to be able to combine various data feeds. It will allow me to merge my heart rate and distance from my Apple Watch with my on-bike power meter. Also, some users may have similar problem with other devices - e.g., phone for recording distance and GPS and a watch or a heart-rate monitor. I don't like that I need to choose which data feel I would like to see on Strava or that I need to merge them via 3rd party website...

    Thanks.

  • It would be nice if scuba diving was added as a sport in strava.

When diving, you log dives (depth, depth profile, length, location). That would be awesome for a Strava integration.

I know numerous athletes/Strava users who log their dives in other apps - why not with Strava?
    Thanks

  • I want to be able to chose what my default map. The 3D map for mtb, trail, hiking does not help me in giving a good view of my track. I don't think the only way to not get the 3D map as default should be to cancel your subscription, but this is what I have done. Right now, I am waiting for my renewal day to get rid of the 3D maps! I might reconsider my cancelation, but not before it is possible to chose what default map is used.

  • Suggestion: be able to set gear defaults per activity type. Currently, I can only set 1 pair of shoes as my default. However, I wear different shoes for road running vs trail running vs hiking. Right now, I have to manually remove my road running shoes (currently set as my default) from every trail run/hike that I upload. It'd be great if I could set a default shoe for each type of activity so I don't have to manually update the gear for every activity.

  • Grade on Routes

When using the Routes tool, in the "Elevation Profile" pop-up area, I want a toggle that will shade the elevation profile based on grade %, or some other similar way to visually depict the grade of the mapped route (maybe a separate plotted line for grade %).

Currently, I have to move my mouse over the entire prospective route to view the grade at each point, and that's pretty tiresome after just a little while. This often pushes me to use other route mapping providers (RidewithGPS, Komoot) that do offer this sort of information when creating MTB routes when I'd otherwise rather use Strava.
