Calories / Kilocalories

I think it should be kilocalories, not just calories.

In German i.e. just capitalizing Kalorie does not work because it is always capitalized.

In a nutritional context, the kilojoule (kJ) is the SI unit of food energy, although the kilocalorie is still in common use.[10] The word calorie is popularly used with the number of kilocalories of nutritional energy measured. As if to avoid confusion, it is sometimes written Calorie (with a capital "C") in an attempt to make the distinction, although this is not widely understood. Capitalization contravenes the rule that the initial letter of a unit name or its derivative shall be lower case in English.

  • My dashboard only shows me kJ information, not calorie information.  Commonly food intake and energy output is measured in Calories.  So.... why is Strava telling me my output in a unit of measurement that doesn't really mean anything to me?  I haven't been able to find a way to change kJ to calorie.  Help!?

I'd just really like to be able to estimate my break-even snack-packing for long rides!

  • Right, it should be kilocalories, and i'd recommend to fix it. Furthermore, 1 kcal = 4.187 kJ.
So i wonder, how i managed to burn 1154 calories (1.154 kcal) in a 55 km ride (it was a pushbike, not a motorbike), equaling 1035 kJ.

  • I tried to discuss the topic to express in kcal instead of calories, but Strava only referred to the calculation method and not to the units used, not able to understand the difference is a factor of 1000. I rest my case.

  • Ok, lets be kcal. It doesnt fix anyway. 1 kJ=0,238 kcal. And I see in my activity 1,705 kJ and 1,44 cal(kcal) ! It should be 407 kcal

  • For my last activity the phone app shows Calories: 2,544 Cal

The same activity on the website Energy Output: 2,539 kJ

Firstly it is odd that both number are not equal.

Secondly the units seem inconsistent as: 1 Cal (or kcal) does not equal 1kJ

    For Strava's benefit kcal x 4.2 = kJ

    {edit: corrected formula}

  • No.
    Not 1 kcal x 4.2 =1kj

It should be: 1 kcal = 4.2 kj

  • Thanks Cris, you are correct, I have updated accordingly.  I hope Strava will do likewise...

  • Guys, I am new to Strava world.

I noticed that my ride on the site is calculated on Energy Output BUT on the app I get Calories instead.

    Also the data are wrong:

On the site it says 696 kJ Energy Output but on the app for the same ride it says 776 Cal !

Anyone having more insight about this?

    Thank you!

  • Why isn't Strava answering or updating the kj/kc issue? Anyone here from Strava?
