iwatch gives different distance to Iphone

Hi,  I have a new generation Iwatch, which i bought because it had its own GPS.  However, on routes (running and cycling) that i have been doing for years using my iphone the distances are different, always shorter.  This makes my times slower as the correct time is measured but reduced distance.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Ive gone back to lugging along my iphone 6.

  • Yes.  I have an old apple watch (requires using a phone), but since a new strava release the distance in running is low.  I run many standard routes and noticed that since late March my distances are shorter.  This week I ran the same route twice, once using the app on the watch, and once just starting the strava app on the phone.  Same route, with watch, came in at 5.0 miles.  iPhone by itself measured it at 5.5 -- and identical to runs done before the update using the watch.  I'd say there's something off with the app on the watch in a recent release.

  • Interesting , I have been using my iPhone for cycling and running and used a garmin 820 on my bike simultaneously. The iPhone recorded further distance than the garmin. I ran a 10k race on Sunday with the iPhone and that recorded 6.4 miles rather than the official 6.2 miles . All of my friends using garmin watches recorded a perfect 6.2 miles . I fear it's the phone that's not accurate rather than Strava or the Iwatch ? I am thinking about getting a new iwatch but fear the garmin range seem to have more accurate GPS - but unsure ?

  • I have a similar experience to Damian.

I ran a 30K race recently and my iWatch 2 read 19.9 miles and my Garmin Forerunner 15 read 18.6 miles (accurate).

Both map traces in Strava look the same - certainly not enough to explain the 1.3 miles difference.

There was heavy tree cover on parts of the run which does coincide with the mile segments with the biggest pace difference.

So my conclusion is that the iWatch 2 GPS accuracy is not as good as the Garmin F15 under tree cover. My normal training is in open terrain and I have not had accuracy issues with the iWatch 2 (running without my iPhone)

Other people that ran the same race show 18.7 to 18.8 miles in Strava.

  • Thanks for the comment Mike , I am hoping the new IWatch 3 is going to be more accurate - may wait till I’ve seen some feedback on here .

  • I've noticed the same thing. I've been doing the same run, pressing start and end at almost identical times, with my Apple Watch (series 1) and my iPhone both running starva separately. So they're actually running off the same (iPhone) GPS. I just finished a run where the Apple Watch recorded 10.7km and the iPhone 11.7km. This is a huge difference! It makes a big difference to the pace I'm told I'm running.

I had auto-stop activated on the Apple Watch. Next time I'll try deactivating it and see if it makes any difference.

  • I have noticed the same thing, did some research and found this thread. AW 3's strava app recorded about 7-10% shorter than what my iphone did. I ran 21k on apple watch and my phone recorded 23k, the other day I run exactly 10k on aw3 and my iphone recorded 10.7k.

  • I continually see the same thing and am on an Apple Watch 4th gen. Am getting really sick of paying for a premium service and the app dev’s not seeming to mind. Don’t get me going on e-bikes stealing KOM’s and Strava still not figuring out a solution.

  • I have a few the same thing. I just bought a 3rd gen Apple Watch to replace an old Garmin and the watch pace is slow. Extremely frustrating. Have apple done anything about this?
