Apple Watch app with cadence sensor?

Hi,

not sure if I understand the current situation correctly: With an Apple Watch I either can either use the Watch application and get heart rate measurements or I can use the iPhone app and get readings from a cadence sensor.

But I can't get both, readings from the cadence sensor + heart rate readings from the watch?

That is correct Jürgen. Our engineers are having a difficult time connecting the apple watch to the cadence sensor, or the apple watch to the phone app for recording just the heart rate. We're still trying to investigate a solution.

  • I don't think connecting the watch directly to cadence sensors is supported by Apple currently.

As said here the best way probably would be communication between the two apps. This would, sort of, allow the second scenario you describe, but also more.

  • Yeah, I just started using Strava in the last week or two and was confused about the feature differences between the watch and the phone.

I figured it was a challenge between getting the watch to get bluetooth data from the main phone or passing HR rate from watch to phone.

It sounded like previous versions of Strava watch app used the watch as more of a display for the phone itself. That was my expected behavior.

I've started just running Strava from both devices so I at least have a realtime speed sensor and HR monitor during my run but it's kinda frustrating and confusing.

  • This is a shame as the first generation Strava app used to connect to the phone almost as an extension. So you could have cadence and so on connected to the phone and use the watch for heartrate.

Now that Strava is stand alone on the watch it's limited in how it works.

But then having the Strava stand alone on the watch is so much better in other ways.

  • Ditto.  Just spent some time trying to figure this out yesterday evening.  Does not appear to be possible.  And, the data does not seem to get merged when it gets to the health app.

  • The current situation gives double rides. I would like to be able to choose: heart rate for the iPhone app or stand alone.

  • I have a iPhone 7 and a iPhone Watch 2. My problem is - I cannot see my heart rate on my iPhone 7, when I start my run on the iPhone. When I start my run on the whatch - i can see the heart rate but i cannot hear my time every km.

Today I start a walk for 0,8 km at the same time on my watch and on my iPhone. After ending the walk at the same time I can see both runs on Strava.

This is the way to see the HR and to listen the times every km - BUT

The time for the run with the watch is 11:15 Minutes.

The time for the run with the iPhone is 10:55 Minutes.

?????????? - why, there is a difference in time?

For me - it wood be better to start with the iPhone and I can see the HR on the iPhone.

  • Yesterday i walk slowly - after my workout - for 1,1 km. The time was 15:52 (iPhone watch 2). The active time - after sync to my iPhone 7 - was 11:27! I was allways going! It would better to start the activity in the phone and there you van see the HF Grim the watch!

  • The old AW1 app used to do what you want, although the phone was running the show, but at least you could get Cadence and Heart Rate, all in one place.

STRAVA decided to update the Watch app when the AW2 came out, and broke this functionality. Worst still they raved about it!

At the end of the day, a stand alone AW2 app is great for runners. STRAVA clearly prioritises runners over cyclists.

I've been posting similar comments everywhere I can, but my posts don't get approved of and I never get a response.

  • Hey Elle,

Any chance you could give an update on this development? It would be great for all mountain bikers as we rely on the speed sensor to compliment the GPS for distance as measurement can be off with the GPS.

    Would appreciate any more info.

    Thx, Matt

  • Hi Matthew, we have no plans to support the speed or distance readings from a speed sensor from the Strava mobile app or compatible wearables. Cadence data + the Apple Watch is a different topic, that is still on the table.

  • I would also very much like to see heart rate AND cadence data sync from the Apple Watch app to the iPhone. I hope you good folks can make it happen!

  • I was pretty disappointed to find out I can’t use my watch for heart rate while also using the GPS/maps/cadence on the regular app. Would love to be able to add heart rate data from the watch while still letting the phone run the show.

  • Elle, what do you mean you are having trouble getting the app to talk to the phone. This worked with Apple Watch 1 app. Get your developers to dig out the old code and have a choice when the Watch app is started, to connect to the phone, or stay independent. Ridewithgps do this already!

  • This whole debacle is like you've sold me a Ferrari (AW1 app). Then announced a major upgrade and swapped my Ferrari for a Fiat Panda with 4 wheel drive (AW2 app), when I don't need 4WD, then said hold on hold on, we'll be upgrading you to a Fiat 500 soon...... Give me back my Ferrari!!!!!! And by the way. Before the Ferrari, I had a Porsche (Strava, with Wahoo display and Heart rate monitor), but I sold it!!!!!!!!! ..... and you've got me paying for Premium, because I need Airbags (Beacon)!!!!!

  • Any new news on this? New to Strava for cycling. Having cadence and HR on the Mobile App would be the perfect solution for me. I prefer using the phone app on a phone mount so I can see data during rides. Having HR and cadence on the screen would be my perfect solution.

  • I love my Apple products and strava, however running a Garmin with a HR chest sensor with Speed and Cadence on the bike sorts all the problems out. Garmin synchronised with strava. However, keep going strava would be nice to just my Watch and loose a few grams of stuff off my bike.

  • Hi Folks,

Could someone explain me what is the advantage of using cadence with AW?

I am using AW with Strava and love it.

What additionally it will bring me when it will work with cadence?

I understood from your discussion that currently it is not yet implemented, correct?

    Thanks

  • If you're asking why a person would like to monitor their cadence, it's to ensure that their pedalling speed and gearing is optimised. You would use a cadence monitor to establish your optimised pedalling speed (everyone's different). Your optimised cadence is variable, based on objective (climbing, sprinting, endurance ride, etc.) and you might encounter training exercises or recovery exercises which require you to pedal at varying speeds (e.g. fast, moderate, slow, 80%, etc.). All of this is hard to even guestimate without a monitor.

Personally, I use mine more casually. For example, during a ride I'll glance during a longer flat to ensure I'm not under/over-doing it, therefor giving undue bias to either my heart or legs. For me, this means aiming for around 85-90rpm. I also use it to try to increase my cadence over time, as I've heard that 96 is a golden number (which I know is nonsense but w/e)..

As for why it's advantageous on an Apple Watch? Same as any other feature ported from the phone app. 1) It saves having to carry, use and monitor an additional display, and 2) The data will be recorded with your activity on Strava. As far as I know, there's no way to merge data after the fact.

  • Hi Simon,

Thanks for the clear explanation.  It sounds very attractive to me because  I am completely new cyclist.

I am thinking to buy a cadence and use it with my AW via iPhone app. Btw should iPhone be all time with the rider or it will simply could sync with it later?

Also I am impressed that data could be integrated into Strava.

Could you point where I could get it. I am about to buy it and try.

    Thanks again

  • No problem at all. If you're using cadence then recording via. the Apple Watch is out of the question. The Apple Watch itself doesn't support this (for now). So, to answer your question, you'd have to carry your iPhone with you during the ride and use the iPhone app, rather than the Watch app. At that point, the Strava app on your Apple Watch is useless - as it won't even act as a mirror for the iPhone. For me, this is unfortunate but fine. I use this a QuadLock (https://www.quadlockcase.com) to keep my iPhone's display handy and love it. You may also look at a Wahoo Elemnt range of displays, which essentially mirror the iPhone's stats, meaning you can keep the iPhone tucked away, keeping it safe and saving the battery (display isn't on).

Back to cadence monitors. You'll want a Bluetooth one, as iPhones don't support Ant+. Personally, I wanted a monitor which supports Bluetooth and Ant+ in case I upgrade to a Garmin computer (Ant+ only) at some point. I got a Cadence + Speed (a monitor which tracks wheel revolutions) monitor from Wahoo, and it works perfectly with the iPhone Strava app. It's also fairly inexpensive. https://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/bike-sensors/wahoo-blue-sc-speed-and-cadence-sensor

You'll also find these devices on wiggle.com and chainreactioncycles.com

  • Hi I was just curious if there has been any progress on using the iwatch for heart rate along with a cadence sensor connected to your phone? Am very keen on this idea and would like to see it in the app as a possibility.

    Many thanks

  • I've been frustrated by this since the first update to support GPS on the Series 2 took away the functionality. I know it has been said since this time that the engineers are working on it, but it doesn't sound like we are any closer to regaining the functionality. But is it possible to side step any issues that are baked into the watch app code?

Would it be possible to devise a way that I could record the session on the watch app AND on the iPhone at the same time, and then the app could merge the data from the two sources into a single workout that has both the cadence and heart rate data? Or would it be possible for the app to read the heart rate data out of the health app?

  • I agree. Either merging two concurrent sessions' data OR reverting to the AW1 version (making the watch a controller for the phone, and the phone connects to all sensors) seem to be the best solutions.

Hopeful that Strava can find a way.

  • If fitdigit with the iBiker app can grab the HR from the Apple Watch (at a one time cost of $6.99), why can't Strava??

  • I've stopped my Strava Premium subscription because of this issue.

... and just to be clear. This used to work, before the Apple Watch 2, the iphone and watch worked together. Strava do have the skills to fix this, they just chose to implement a running friendly app over a cycling friendly app!!!

I no longer care if this gets fixed in the future, I do not intend to pay for Strava again!

    Have fun y'all

  • Hi is there an update regarding pairing cadence sensor / footpod to apple watch for tracking my run data? There's some great footpods on the market at the moment but such a shame if I can't sync my cadence data along with my run in the same way you can with Garmin devices.

  • Either Strava doesn't really give a shit and has this functionality on the phantom backlog/graveyard, or their engineers are incompetent. Their apps are pretty good quality, so it's definitely the former.
