Create interval workouts for Apple Watch

One of the features that will keep me tethered to Garmin watches and their web interface (Garmin Connect) is their workout creation and playback. As a serious runner, it would be great to use Strava and my Apple Watch to create and run interval workouts. When I'm running I want to be focussing on my run, not trying to keep track of my interval workout in my head. I imagine many athletes would find a feature like this helpful and it would help establish Strava not just as a tracking app, but as a training app as well. And being able to make workouts that you have created public seems like it would be a great new social component to Stravas endeavors.

  • I find the ability to program workouts to be of fundamental importance.  What is a running watch for if not to allow this functionality?  As of now, for anything other than LSD runs or other steady pace runs, I end up wearing my Garmin.  I've worn _both_ the Garmin and the Apple watch but this is clumsy at best.  Even in steady pace runs - I find myself checking my watch too often in order to figure out if I'm going at the right pace.

On a related note - it would be great to be able to have configurability of the data shown on the watch face while using the Strava Apple watch app.  A second data screen would help as well.

I bought my Apple watch under the expectation that software people would be able to use its hardware power to make it into a multi-function device.  The Strava Apple watch app. has some critical failures at turning the Apple watch into a running watch.

  • So want this feature. I love the Apple Watch, but the Strava app is lacking features.

    - Ability to modify the screens and configure the data fields like Garmin allows.

    - Workout creation (Intervals, tempo runs etc.), either on Strava web app and let it sync (like Garmin does). Willing to live with this one. Or let it be part of the iOS app, that works too. This needs to have things like setting target pace (even if it is a range like Garmin allows), distance/time etc. with repeats. Garmin web app though a little fidly does allow this.

    - Bonus points if pace calculations can be autogenerated on target times etc. (I have to go around find a pace calculator and find paces sometimes :)) Hence why this is a bonus point :).

  • I agree 100%.  I am torn between the functionality of a Garmin Watch and Garmin Connect for creating intervals and other targets for running workouts and the versatility of an Apple Watch for everything else!  It would be great if Strava could create an interface similar to Garmin Connect allowing customization of workouts.

  • Yes yes yes yes yes. Without being able to create interval workouts the app is just a tracking device. Strava wants us to enter goals on their platform but then doesn't provide the training options to follow through

  • Last couple of months I have been using WorkOutdoors beta on the apple watch! This app uploads directly to strava and has intervals (and a lot of data metrics (even more then garmin). Havent used my Fenix3HR very much since.

http://workoutdoors.net check it out, maybe it can help some of you :)

The intervals are currently in beta and the dev is trying to release next week with IOS13.

  • I guess that an app called ismoothrun will do this now with the Apple Watch but I do hate to have and pay for multiple apps almost as much as I hate to wear two watches.

  • I am using ismoothrun and this works too...i have also looked at workoutdoors...but okay not the beta. so i didn't see the interval feature.

Unfortunately both apps doesn't support the strava beacon or any kind of live tracking, which i need. I want to share my position with my husband at home. ismoothrun says that it supports runkeeper live, but it doesn't work so it waisted money for the runkeeper pro licence :(

  • You already feature a Training option. How difficult is it really to allow us to combine with a user definable schedule (e.g. 1 min running / 2 mins walking with 6 repeats)? Of course with audio guidance, so you get notified w/o having to look at the watch...

Come on, Strava! Make it happen!

  • Completely agree.  This is the ONE functionality that is preventing me from moving from Runkeeper.  Every other running app allows for this, except for Strava.  It feels like such a small thing to add, but it would provide so much more to my training

  • To perform complete running training schedules with strava and the apple watch, this is an essential function. Unfortunately this feature idea was already placed here in 2017 and the feature is still not implemented, this is very disappointing and an important reason to dedicate to other apps for all training except endurance running.

  • I switched from runkeeper to strava for it's competitive elements (segments etc). One of the key features of runkeeper (pro) is the ability to create workouts (i.e. 1x 400mtr fast - 1 x 100 mtr slow (repeated x times)). During this workout, my Apple watch notifies me (audible ping) when to start to next segment. I get updated on the progress as well with previous interval times.

I recently switched to Strava pro expecting the same feature as runkeeper on workouts, finding that there's no such thing in Strava. Even worse reading from this post, it's been brought to their attention 3 years ago. Come on, this should be a key feature in an app like this.

I'll skip the Summit (pro) version since there's little extra over the basic version.
