What is the best GPS watch for Strava?

Hello All,

I'm fed up of carrying around my iPhone on runs so I'm thinking about investing in a GPS watch. I'm considering the Garmin Forerunner 35, Tomtom Spark 3 (GPS & HR or no HR.) or Apple Watch series 2. Just want to know people's personal experiences e.g. How easy was it to link the watch to Starva and how well did the GPS work?

Thanks,

Sam

  • Hey Sam, I felt the same way about my phone. I ended up getting the Garmin 235 with HR and I love it.  A few people I also run with have it.

Overall it's accuracy in distance, time and heart rate seem spot on, and it's lasted in both extreme heat and cold.

I have the Garmin app which you can enable to auto-sync with your watch and Strava.

  • I have a Garmin Fenix running the latest software. It’s worlds away from when they first released it. Brilliant watch. Don’t use my AW series 3 anymore. Fenix 5 is great for running. It’s great for hiking. It also tracks weight training with a great deal of accuracy. Worth every penny. It looks far superior to any other Garmin watch on the market. I bought the leather Garmin strap for wearing with suit etc. Awesome

  • Hey Samantha,

Thank you for the recommendation, I'll probably go with the Garmin then. Particularly helpful knowing about the auto-sync!

    Thanks,

    Sam

  • Hi Mark,

Just had a look at the Fenix, a lot prettier. If money was no issue that would be definitely be first choice.

    Decisions, decisions...

    Cheers,

    Sam

  • I know you have probably purchased the watch already, but since you are going from an Iphone to a watch, the apple watch has been pretty reliable when it comes to running. The only downside I've seen is inaccurate running distance when tracking indoor runs through both the Strava app and the Apple Activity app. Outdoor running has been spot on though. It also tracks your heart rate through your wrist so you don't need a pesky chest strap. Lastly, even though Strava hasn't released the feature yet, it also lets you swim with it so you can track your progress while swimming. I've been very happy with this watch. I haven't had a newer garmin smartwatch to compare with, but I had the garmin 610 and compared to that, the GPS tracking on apple watch is much better with performance and accuracy.

Best of luck in your Purchasing and Training!

  • Hi All,

The watch has been purchased, £115 for a Garmin Forerunner 35. Works really well, looks decent, not  too bulky and the battery life is excellent. Definitely would recommend.

Only slight issue I have had is once it took 5 minutes to connect to GPS, but other than that I have had no problems with the GPS, appears accurate to me. Only thing I wish it had was a "workout" mode, but that's not why I got the watch.

Thanks for the review anyway Justin - hopefully will help someone else.

  • In the same boat. Apple Watch 3 (AW3) or Garmin Forerunner 645.

@Mark Greaves LOLWould love the Fenix but my wife wouldn't :-)

I've got an iPhone and the upside of the AW3 is the Apple ecosystem, but I just want to tell the time and track all my activities, not particularly interested in looking like Michael Knight from Knightrider!

I'm on the fence though... Garmin plays nice with iOS/Strava through Garmin App? Records steps, runs, rides? The features on the Garmin look pretty loaded. Garmin Pay, GPS/GLONASS etc... Looks better than the Apple Watch too, but on the fence. Comparable pricing.

  • Update.

So I've spent a week with Apple Watch 3 (AW3), a week with the new Galaxy Watch and finally ended up going with a Garmin #Fenix5. @Mark Greaves

The new Galaxy Watch is a great watch, but despite claims to the contrary on it's promotional website it DOES NOT support Strava either natively or through a Connected Service in SHealth. There is also no integration to Apple's HealthKit using Samsung Health on iOS. On balance the Galaxy Watch is the best unit overall (price/hardware), but with absolutely NO Strava/HealthKit support it's next to useless. :-/

Switched to the Garmin Fenix 5. Amazing looking unit, also got leather straps. Amazing Strava/HealthKit integration through Garmin Connect. My only issue with it is the screen type. Galaxy/Apple are OLED so in low light they have great visibility/contrast (but, it drains the battery quicker). The Garmin units all use sunlight-visible, transflective screens. In low light you have to use the "backlight" which really washes the contrast/display out. Outside, in direct sun, much better. I guess it was a trade off. Less contrast/visibility in low light for longer batter life vs. the opposite you find in Galaxy/Apple watches.

    Other than that; great unit.

  • Thought I’d give a little update. I missed Apple Pay too much and the ability to make calls, via AirPods, whilst out and about. So I went back to an Apple Watch. The HomeKit intergration is also a real bonus for me. I do miss some elements of the Fenix 5. Mainly it’s indestructible. However please with AW 3. For instance while on holiday me and my daughter we’re swimming and I’d forgotten her bands. I was able to text the wife from the watch and also pay for the new bands with the watch too. Garmin can’t do that and in the UK Garmin pay is still very limited. Such a difficult decision though. I get the dilemmas

  • I just wanted to add that I have a suunto watch and you have to download activities to another app before Strava for the sync. Garmin sounds much easier with the auto-sync!
