Designate between a "Group" and a "Solo" ride on Strava

This would allow Strava cyclists to tag a ride as a group ride or a solo ride, and also be able to sort segment leaderboards by those filters.

  • Will Vousden sprach: "most of them aren't affected by whether the ride was a group ride or a solo ride".

    As much as I wish that were the case, it's just not backed up by the facts. Go look at a handful of flat segments. Usually, you'll find (from checking the dates and elapsed times) that about a full half of the top-10 on the leaderboard are from the same group ride. They are hugely affected by whether the ride was a group or solo ride.

  • I support a tick box to mark rides as ITT's, but any auto-sorting will just lead to bad data.

    Further those with knickers in a twist about groups taking your KoMs, chill the fudge out and find steeper climbs where group efforts can't help or join your local club. Seriously around here we use the term "windfarming" for when someone goes out on a 30km+ windy day and mops up KoMs. I descend like Andy Schleck but I've got a downhill KoM (solo for what it's worth) thanks to being pushed by an impending storm. I TTT'ed the same segment with my strongest friends the other day (one of whom would be a Cat 1 in the American system) and we all came up 3km/hr below my KoM, so being in or out of a group is sometimes only half the story. On the climbs around here I generally do better solo than with my friends because I can pace myself instead of going into the red responding to and instigating surges and attacks (the real time win is always more important than the Strava time).

    Yes I race, yes I have more than a page of K0M's, no hardly any of them were earned on a group ride.

  • 4 years and this is still going on? Just checked in to see if there has been any progress—nope!

    Strava obviously doesn't attach any importance to it so I've given up.

  • It's a shame this feature hasn't been implemented... I'm sure that most people who do group rides would say something along the lines of "I wasn't even taking any notice of the Strava segments, I was competing against my fellow riders on the day"... which makes it even more annoying that they have accidentally taken away some of the fun us solo-riders have trying to beat other solo rider's times.... As more and more group rides take place I can see this problem being a reason I don't bother with Strava any more (I'm currently a Premium member of Strava)...  Of course, it won't be fool-proof as anyone could ride with a "stealth" (non Strava-User), which I guess is the reason why it hasn't been addressed?

  • As someone who rides a lot in a variety of different condition, but will never care about achieving KOM's (unless it is in the combined older heavier 55-64 age group, 180-200 lb category, and even that is a long shot unless I pick a really obscure segment where the whole leaderboard consists of just me).

    So many factors affect KOM's in addition to the inherent fitness of the athlete: self reporting, weather and wind, where a segment falls in a ride, group size, equipment. It seems hard to take them too seriously given all that variability.

    Segment performance data can be interesting and valuable if you know its provenance. Certainly one's own rides and efforts fall squarely into that category.

    So better attribution supporting better selection, filtering, and analysis of my own data over time is what I'm looking for.

    For instance I like the color coding in the training log based on ride type.

    As I'm sure many do, I consistently use certain keywords in the activity title as a poor man's classification scheme: group rides start with LH (for the club I ride with), "solo", "family" for leisurely rides with the kids, default titles "morning ride" and "evening ride" cover my commutes, for organized events and races I use their names.

    What would be of value to me is

    • a few more pre defined ride attributes, logically organized, such as this request, "group", "solo"
    • self-defined categories/tags in addition to the pre-defined attributes
    • ability to filter segment results by multiple criteria simultaneously
    • ability to filter segment results by more criteria than are currently provided

  • Agree with this - very old - idea. And well, the group / solo filtering option on segment leaderboards should be pretty straightforward to implement:

    1. If a user has ridden with others - which Strava detects - an effort is marked as a group-effort.

    2. If not, but the system used to link rides of calculate the rate of match in the flyby-option can be used to check if an effort was set together with others. If yes -> mark.

    3. If 2 is too difficult, check if an effort on a segment roughly matches another effort (say, like, 98% or so) that started at roughly the same time (give or take a second).

  • YES, we need this so badly... if I see the all time records of a segment for my group members I cannot distinct between a solo ride or a group ride ;-(

  • Kevin, only thing I can think of is naming convention: I always include "SOLO" in the title of a trip I did alone.. but how to distinct in stats en segement best times etc... I don't know... Tell me?

  • @petertoes, including "SOLO" is a decent convention, but still it would be trivial and way more helpful for a single checkbox or a few radio buttons to differentiate group vs solo rides. That way you could compare apples to apples. It just to be seems like a no brainer for the Strava folks to implement, and would literally take 5 minutes. Here, I'll halp, gratis

    Add this to the app/webpage

    <div class="solo-group">
    <label for="solo">Solo Ride</label>
      <input type="radio" name="solo" id="solo" value="solo"><br/>
      <label for="group">Group Ride</label>
      <input type="radio" name="group" id="group" value="group"><br/>
    </div>

    Then add to the dao/db object

    {
    "solo_group": "<input value>"
    }

    And boom goes the dynamite. I'm a wizard.

  • Totally agree with Larissa.

    Someone pointed me to this ride in my area: https://www.strava.com/activities/1046177320 . I really don't mind that people are riding these loops in a group, even calling it 'KOM Hunt' is no problem. But: imagine someone riding solo, working hard to get a certain KOM, then a group like this comes along and boom: you're no. 5. Or, when you look in to it, 9th, which is the position of the current fastests solo rider.

    I use Strava for some TT-training and comparing to other solo rides helps this, comparing with groups is useless and getting better and faster means that comparing in the default ride-view doesn't work anymore; many of the other riders are group-efforts. I really don't need a KOM or a top 10 position, I want to compare with other solo riders.

    So Strava, just make it a simple option: add 'group ride' as a tickbox. Or another very simple solution: add the choice 'group ride' to the list of ride-types.

  • I agree that group rides with KOMs/QOMs should be categorised as Group KOM/QOM or should at least not be taken from someone who has achieved it solo (although it's not actually possible to verify this if the people they're riding with don't have a tracking device).

    BUT! I think something has changed.  I am not getting notifications generally (although I did for a sportive) of group ride QOMs being taken on the whole, although I occasionally. Maybe Strava have begun work in the background or maybe they just don't want to alienate a whole load of users who really care about trophies and will do whatever they can to get them...

    All of this said, it feels really good if you can get a crown back solo from someone who got it on a group ride - makes you work harder and become a better cyclist!

  • Maybe they've started but want something smart to cover the cases in which an effort looks like a solo effort, but isn't? Anyhow, a short update "we're working on it" would be nice :-)

  • It would be great to be able to sort between solo and group but overall between "race" and "training". Indeed, it is almost impossible to ride as fast as a bunch during a race and consequently, you can find yourself very very far in the ranking in case a race took your road...

    I suggest a general classification and adding some new filters options on the left side pannel such as race, group, solo.

  • Graeme - that is exactly my point. I want to easily identify which of my OWN efforts were done solo or with the benefit of a draft. Both require effort, but one gives deeper satisfaction!

  • We don't need self regulation, let the users regulate.

    Add a solo/group switch which is set to group when Strava detects a group (which it does pretty well). Then add the 'Group effort set as solo ride" option to the flag-option. When you can be flagged when you don't set the group option people will start to set it correctly.

    Groups can still have their KOMs, no problem. We just want to compare solo rides to solo efforts.

  • so... for one of the most chatted topics... it's interesting to see that it is still not available.

    I would like to do my laps of richmond park... but then separate between solo and team rides... solo is a boat load harder and something I really struggle to improve.  But this means that if I do a ride with a mate, I'll smash the solo effort and then never be able to incrementally improve it.

    I appreciate there will always be dishonest people who will get their PB's by drafting a moped/motorbike, but candidly, that's their loss, not mine as I'm never going to be that good that I'll be competing against them.

  • Separate solo and group ride segment-logging and leaderboards needs doing. Rather than being a manual tick (open to abuse) it could be assigned as a group ride based on how many people you rode with and how long for - Strava already has that data.

    Currently there's essentially no point in me looking at my times when I've been out on my own because I'm never have going to have come close to times on segments I've ridden with a group.

  • Just want to add one more voice to the request. A KOM in a group is meaningless and discouraging to those who get it on their own.

    It is a MAJOR flaw in the whole ranking scheme for cycling. Eventually they all become irrelevant in areas with lots of riders.

    Personally I don't think it needs to be overly complicated. A distinction between group/individual would be interesting but unnecessary. Who cares who was hanging on at the back when someone drove the group over the line?

    Limit KOMs to those riding alone, period. That is the point right? It promotes healthy competition rather than discouraged abandonment of certain segments.

  • When the notification popped in my computer screen and I saw the title... for one GLORIOUS moment I excitedly clicked on it and thought "here is the final answer that makes strava brilliant".    Then I just saw that it was a continuation on the thread.

    I have ACTIVELY said no to friends to join me on certain favoured rides, (for example Richmond Park London), because I know that all it takes is a couple of cars to force us into single file and next thing we're drafting.  If I smash a few segments together, then I'll never be able to beat myself again SOLO.

    I'm not saying DRAFTING rides are cheating, but if I beat someone, I want to know that I did it because it was clean, not because I was in a group.  Likewise if someone beats me and I find out they've been cheating, then it spoils Strava.

    :-(....

  • YES< NEED THE GROUP/SOLO feature!!!! Please, Start forcing a user choice before press "START", you must select "SOLO" or "GROUP" then START

    if strava detects two riders doing the same exact segment within a meter for more than half of a segment, over-ride any user "SOLO" setting to GROUP , cause THEY BE BUSTED! haha...

    Personally: i plan to create a second user -  2nd user name: "Rob Group Ride" only used for bragging rights over beers after... (i have never turned on my strava in group rides before)

    "Rob Solo ITT"  = is much more important - my own PERSONAL ITT BEST times... screw everyone else, the wind, the better bikes, the folks following pace cars (ive seen it!) and other cheating methods. I only do closed circuit comparisons to eliminate wind and ignore groups ahead of me... PLUS, a lot of folks are using e-bikes now, so funny, especially on MTB singletrack...

    I also dont want my group rides to mess with my personal ITT best times... dont mess with my personal goals!!

    For me "DONT let this group ride MESS with my personal Solo Best!" is the most important issue and why this feature is a must. Strava should autopopulate the group or solo field from comparing same time/day rides from past years. And yes, that wont be 100% accurate cause many road with folks that do not have strava recording from 2015 and before.

  • More elaborate: ticking a box group or solo, and when in group link it to a club.  That way all rides, ridden in a club, can be grouped and used for statistics and totals.  That way, for instance, you can see which team member joined the most trainings of the club, etc.

  • I think this is a great idea. There's s few segments I've ridden which I know I'll never get KOM as they're won during a group ride. I could try getting my wife to drive in front of me and draft her though.... hmmmmm
