Create a Route and send to Strava Mobile App for navigation

Hi Strava, I'm not sure if this have previously been discussed but its a feature upgrade that personally I would find very helpful.

I've recently noticed that one of your competitors has the ability to create a route on their webpage on a PC and then send this route to the iPhone app. I can then ride the route using the map displayed with the route shown and my current position using the iPhone's GPS facility.

Quite often I plan a route before a ride but have to stop to check a map app. I know your app has the option of displaying the map and the route you have already ridden but have you considered/ is it possible for a predetermined route to be displayed?

Many thanks

  • Strava,

Please also allow the ability to build a route from either my own or someone else's route.  Allow the route code (e.g. 1053207, i.e. http://www.strava.com/activities/1053207) to be searched for and then used to build a route.  This way I can plan and ride along popular cycling routes in new cities by looking at other people's ride histories.

I support the desire to have route viewable (with turn by turn instructions) on your mobile phone apps.

  • Endomondo user here - I think this would bring me over to Strava for good! Please give this feature the importance it deserves!

  • Creating and following a route would be great, but I'd also like to be able to follow a gpx route via strava on my iphone. That way I can grab a route from antwhere and load it.

  • This feature would be fantastic, I was looking at getting a Mio Cyclo but decided £300 was a little too much and so decided to look for a solution on my phone and wasn't too keen on leaving strava, so this would be brilliant! Any chance of an update on when it might be likely to appear?

  • While Strava does not have this functionality, I plan in Strava, export gpx and import it on viewranger app. Then I have a turn-by-turn navigation. I hope one day have all these functionalities in Strava.

  • Hi Elle @ Strava.  Any update on the inclusion of Strava Routes on iPhone  from your 7th Feb post (including the ability to upload GPX onto the website and then download to mobile device)

    Thanks

  • Hi Mark - This is a project that is on our list to work on next, so I guess you could say it's currently in development! I don't have specific details about what features will be worked on first, but the overall goal is to bring Strava Routes features to the mobile app.

  • The most interesting possibility would be a turn by turn voice or even just simple left turn/right turn directions like the garmin 510 does, I like to plot quite complex routes and find new roads to cycle to keep things fresh  - this would allow me to do this.

  • Absolutely agree with Ross Hulford. A turn by turn voice navigation is what's needed. When I run I cannot look at a map!

  • I use a convoluted path to navigate for my commute and I would really appreicate having this feature on Strava.

Turn by turn navigation of a pre-planned route is a must.

It would be great if you could optimize certain things on a route, in my case, the least amount of elevation gain, and the ability to avoid certain streets (school zones that are busy, main streets, etc.)

  • I' have been using Endomondo where you can easily create a route and follow it with the Endomondo app (free version). I mainly use Endomondo as Strava still don't have an app for the Blackberry Z10. After completing the ride, I upload the GPX file to Strava. I think Strava is still the better tool and use this online, but there is a gap here in terms of being able to define and/or upload a defined route and follow it (even before having an app for the Z10).

  • Ive been using an app on my iphone for turn by turn directions that I have been happy with. You create your own route and get a verbal turn by turn direction with lengths of each segment. Ex: "turn on so and so street, you will be on this road for 2 miles"

    Its called Mapkin

  • Hi Bruce, how do you import a Strava segment into Mapkin?

  • Strava really should have had this feature build-in from day 1.

This is the most obvious thing for an app like Strava to have.

And if there are legal or API issues precluding them from supporting this, then Strava needs to make .tcx files [with cue sheets] or similar available so the route info can be imported into another app.
To tell the truth, this is the reason I became a paid member, to try get this kind of turn-by-turn functionality, or at the very least a workaround.
The gpx data I can get as a paid member is pretty much useless to me, so I'm considering cancelling my subscription.

  • P P,

Unfortunately you cant upload strava data to it. Its an independent app. I dont think the strava builder is worth any sort of time or effort as it doesnt give the user anything back that is of use (at least for me). I think it would have been a great feature if thoughtfully planned out and implemented but unfortunately it was not.

I just create a route in mapkin and simultaneously run it with strava so that I am recording my ride as well as get my directions when trying a new route.

  • I agree with all the above. Currently, RideWithGPS get my monthly subscription as they have a much better route editor with turn by turn navigation. Their maps also handle footpath data which is excellent for a bit of offroading. Strava is still secondary for me -i only use it to check on my section times by exporting from RWGps and importing into strava.

  • Elle mentions "routes" a lot, and they would be useful, but I think that segments are the more Strava specific issue.
Srava's big deal-breaking attraction is the competition on segments, but they are difficult to follow.

There are often a lot of ways that one can get from A to B so without some sort of navigation people
will find it difficult to follow the segment and stay in the race.

    For the time being
    > Hi Bruce, how do you import a Strava segment into Mapkin?

Is a good question. Is it possible to export segments as gpx files so that we can put them in MyTracks (Google Maps) or another navigation program?

  • I was looking for this last weekend. Discovered that I couldn't see my routes in the Strava app.

  • +1 to this idea. I can't believe it's been a year since this request and it hasn't been implemented yet. Having our pre-planned routes viewable in the app for mid-ride double checks or to share with someone who wants to import the route to theirs would be awesome!

  • It is possible to download segments to a Garmin at least, using the procedure detailed here
    http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/use-your-garmin-virtual-partner-to-get-strava-koms/

Perhaps the same files could be loaded into iPhone or Android navigator.

  • Timothy, this looks awesome. I got to the point where I created the course in CRS format. But I can't find an iphone app that would let me race against the CRS file in real time, with audio indications such as "you are 6 seconds behind/ahead, 2 miles to go".

  • +1 to everyone else's comments on here. Just joined Strava and quite possibly wouldn't have with this not being a feature. Should be a simple enough update considering you can export to Garmin.

  • As a temporary measure I have been using Co-rider for Iphone with TCX files generated in RideWithGps.  Use Strava too for segments but is a bit of a battery drain.

Strava why do you not approach Anders the developer and see if you can strike a deal - with some more cash behind Co-Rider sure  it could be integrated into Strava.

  • Currently I use iSmoothRun for my rides. But if Strava would have navigation support for your routes, I will switch immediately.

  • I echo the comments of most of those users above, having been used to viewing my selected route on either RunKeeper or MapMyRide iPhone apps.  This is a feature that is currently severely lacking on Strava so I hope that it'll be added VERY soon!  Turn-by-turn voice prompts would be extremely useful too for following predefined routes.

  • This is my number 1 most wanted feature!
I love find the Route creating portion of the website (along with heat maps) super useful for finding the most direct/popular way to get to a certain place. At the moment my solution is to write down instructions on my arm in pen and look at it as I ride, then cross reference google maps if I get lost. It would be amazing if you could just create a route on the website, hit a button and have it all sent to your iPhone.
Please get this one done and I will love you forever, Strava team.

  • I struggled with the Route Builder for about half an hour yesterday. "Undoing" cleared the whole route completely and "redo" did not redo anything it. Plus it kept adding extra squiggles on the end of the route beyond the point where I had clicked (unless I swappwed to manual mode). But I had forgotten I would not be able to use the route even if I had complete it anyway, so it is a good thing that I did not complete it.

One can export to GPX and then load to the IpBike android application. Ipbike, created in spare time non-commercially, shows speed (cadence and heart rate if you have the sensors) in real time too.
