Manually add Distance for an Indoor/Stationary Activity

When uploading indoor activities like indoor cycling or treadmill, no distance appears. Only HR. Would be useful to activate a field in wich we can type in the distance

  • Just tried the treadmill + HR monitor. A comment here recommended saving a 0 mileage treadmill activity to save HR monitor data and then manually upload the mileage as a separate activity.

Strava is not letting me upload my 0 mileage treadmill activity stating that it "needs a longer activity to upload and analyze. Please continue or start over."

Basically I lose the HR info. Now I'm disappointed with this product

  • 2 years... and counting... Shame on you Strava. Such a simple and needed feature.

  • Strava.. Wtf?? I just purchased Premium Membership and THEN I noticed how you disregard such an important request like this. What strikes me is your lack of responses here and your lack of understanding of how damn important such a simple feature is. Maybe you guys are freaking blessed with the possibility to ride outdoor every day. Good for you. For me, here in Denmark, where 5 of 12 months are destined to be inside on the home trainer the option of adding the distance manually is simply a need.

So this was a brief Premium membership.

  • Jesper. You should use Zwift. You can upload your workouts to Strava. It records the ride with all the stats and you'll have tons of fun riding with others around the world.

  • Strava: What is the use of having a yearly goal for swimming if we have no way of input the distance for the swimming activities? Fix this now!

  • This would be very helpful for people who train indoors and out and have a weekly distance goal.

  • I would like to see fields to manually add input for mileage, cadence and power into an indoor activity as I can in  Garmin Connect. I was hoping this would be available with Premiom , but there doesn't seem much extra for going premium.

  • Elle,

Thanks for your honest answer... Of course I'm (and most likely great majority of Strava users) are not happy with the decision. Before the whole flame wars start - can you please help understanding rationale behind it?

This looks like not a technical limitation because you have both functionality available - manual edits of entries and uploads of HRM/distance/etc. data. This seams like Strava team is making a call of not supporting this functionality because of some reasons even though customers are asking for that and multiple see it as a show-stopper to use your service at all.

Can you provide rationale behind your decision, please?

  • I appreciate the honesty, as now there's no need to wait around for a feature that won't be coming. Strava is clearly not a site for folks to accurately track running or cycling. It isn't a site to accurately track competition either, but that's another support thread.

Again though, I appreciate the candor. Subscription canceled.

  • Strava Premium seems to be coming more and more of just a way to subsidise the subscription-free model.  I originally signed up to Premium some 15 months ago, thinking I was investing in improvements and new features for Premium members, but I've not seen anything new, not even Premium features that were "coming soon" when I signed up.  Instead, the money I admittedly choose to pay seems to just go to developing phone and Apple Watch apps.  I think Strava's more interested in getting as many casual users as it can than providing a service but those who take a real interest in their fitness.  The thing is, Strava, if you're going to monetise all these "free" users by getting them to upgrade to Premium, you've got to demonstrate an actual commitment to the Premium service which I just don't see.

  • So what you are saying is that you have absolutely no value proposition against free services such as Polarpersonaltrainer.com?

    Polar Personal Trainer is free

Polar Personal Trainer handles all activity types

Polar Personal Trainer has free training programs for almost everything

Polar Personal Trainer has more analysis tools than strava

Polar Personal Trainer has a Overtraining/fatigue tracker that works with all activities, where strava only considers biking

Polar Personal Trainer lets you edit your work out so all reports/analysis and work out tracking reflects the training you actually did.

All in all theres no reason to use Strava for anything but two months of Zwift.

  • Like others, I'm feeling the answer from the moderator is incomplete. Those commenting have given many reasons to edit an activity: Indoor training, battery failure on Garmin (and other reasons for incomplete data. Personally, I just want my time and distance to be accurate. We need a reason why that shouldn't happen. If I ever get serious about my training again, Strava won't be the tool I'll use. Meantime the fly-bys for races and keeping track of ride buddies training are useful... but it is not a training diary without the ability to edit

  • What if there was a speed/cadence meter on the stationary bike, would it then add the distance automatically?

  • @ John Jones.  I use a Garmin 500 with Garmin speed sensor and it does record distance when uploaded to Strava.

  • This is really disappointing, I recently switched from Runkeeper to Strava on a friend's recommendation, and because Runkeeper has crashed a lot on me recently. I run a lot on the treadmill with my Apple Watch and would love to be able to enter more data about my indoor runs, and get analysis about ALL my runs.

This missing feature has me second guessing the move to Strava.

  • It truly boggles the mind why the Strava team would resist such a simple change with obvious benefits and clear support in their user community.  I was considering Premium, but since this functionality gap is my biggest issue with the app/service and Strava's recalcitrant refusal to address the issue has made my decision much easier.

  • I have yet another example of how absurd the "accurate data" reason given by Strava is for not giving users the ability to correct their data so that it is accurate.

Yesterday I did an indoor run on the treadmill, using a Garmin Forerunner 310XT. As it is set to automatically sync its internal date/time (from GPS), because it was unable to communicate with GPS satellites indoors, my watch recorded my exercise activity as occurring on March 31, 2007. So when I imported this new activity, it now shows as the very last activity in my feed, in 2007.

Exercise date and time also happen to be fields that Strava doesn't allow you to change. So while I can change these fine in Garmin Connect to correct the error and get accurate exercise stats for the month, I cannot in Strava.

Bottom line -- the dead horse of supposed data accuracy has been beat to death -- this not a valid reason, in fact, just the opposite. Whether it has to do with not allowing activity that occurs on stationary bikes or treadmills (without GPS), or not allowing people to correct errors in dates, time, or distance, while at the same time allowing computerized programs that generate false GPS data so that you can upload an exercise that Strava accepts and shows that you rode the Alpe de Huez or ran a marathon in Kona while never leaving your living room, the "accurate data" reason is just ridiculously bogus. Data on Strava is inaccurate in a myriad of ways, and preventing people from making it accurate just for their own personal use makes Strava completely useless as a training tool. I've already canceled my subscription....though I've hung with Strava for a few years hoping they'd wise up and try to become an actual go-to fitness tracker site, rather than a buy-a-new-gran-fondo-achievement-kit site. I use Garmin Connect now....they allow all of this stuff to be tracked and edited as necessary. They are also now adding social features and segments, so any difference or value-add in Strava is quickly disappearing.

  • My guess is that strava fired all developpers and only kept sales guys. Which may or may not be right decision. Well i guess the sales guys are in programimg 101 course for past two years. But when they are back i am sure we will see a lot of new features. Lets just be patient for now.

  • Strava just lost another Premium subscriber. The 'social' aspect is not worth a subscription fee. When a group of people have to PAY in order to simply interact, it says as much about the group as the bloodsuckers trolling for revenue dollars. Strava REFUSES to even acknowledge the fundamental flaws in its data collection, editing of workouts, etc.Unresponsive companies go the way of the Doe Doe! Riddance, Strava!

  • Hi, surely if there is a demand for what appears to be a simple addition to the Strava platform then this needs to be acted upon. I've been a premium member for a few years but will be moving over to Garmin Connect where the ability to add treadmill/bike distance manually to an indoor workout can be done.

Is it really that much of an issue adding it to Strava?

  • Have to agree with the latest comments. I work for a software company and monitor a feedback group like this one. When we don't act on an obviously necessary feature it's because all our development resources are allocated elsewhere. In the case of Strava, I'm not seeing the amazing new features and the interface is generally a bit clunky. Come on Strava. I want to:

    - Manually add distance for an indoor activity
    - Edit an activity that I have created manually
    - Add additional time and distance to activities where my Garmin battery has died before the end (I don't expect the manual stuff to get me segment times - just keep my training log accurate)

  • Elle,

Google this..."1969, man lands on the moon". And you can't add the requested simple feature. Really!? With all your paying clients, your solution is a 'polite reply' telling us to make it a manual activity. Sounds more like 'go to another site that offers service' to me. See ya later Strava

  • Is the reason this issue is not being addressed that people could then cheat on challenges? I am much more concerned with being able to keep an accurate account of my own training than worrying someone will a site like this and fake their data. The top time on one of my bike segments shows an average speed in excess of 90 km/hr, so as long as people have access to cars, they can still fake some data.

  • I've been trying out Strava at the recommendation of a cycling friend... and it works great for outdoor cycling and running.  But you don't support stationary rides or runs even though I have an Apple watch collecting heartrate data?  Or seem to care about other sports (kayaking and SUP in my case)?  I would pay for a membership if you had any support at all for these requirements, and so would a lot of others I'm sure.  You really are going to be surpassed by the next thing that comes along in this space.
