Expand weight categories over 200lbs/95kg for Segment Filters

I am a paying customer. I am over 200lbs. (248lbs) I would like to see the weights above 200lbs segmented like you do for weights under 200lbs. Why discriminate and categorize us Clydes as all "above 200" when you categorize weight in 10-15lb segmetns for folks under 200....? One of the reasons I pay for Strava is so I can compare myself to others who weigh as much as me. Not 20 or 30 lbs less. I just want t he same features paying customers under 200bs get. Which I think is fair, don;t you?

  • Please Strava, we need this added ASAP!    I am perplexed as to why this is a big deal to add.   This thread has been going on for 3 years now!   The data is all there and just needs to be filtered  in more finite steps beyond 200+.

I said this before in one of my posts, but if you are worried about to small a recordset , then have the filter work like this.

    200+

    215+

    230+

    245+ and so on.

Ideally I would ultimately like to see a slider bar that lets us dial in exactly the weights we want to look at.   But this might take 10 years to implement ;)

  • Strava,

Why don't you just add 1 more above 200lbs? That would make a lot of people happy. Many people consider 225+ the Clydesdale class...that seems to be a logical next step.

Personally, I don't care so much anymore...I am beyond understanding why you just haven't done it already.

I love Strava to track my rides and allow me to compare my own efforts...so it doesn't matter if I am 100 or 250 pounds.

  • I'd have a lot more respect of Strava, and continue with Premium, if they simply told us that it's against their philosophy and everyone over 200lbs is a fattie not deserving of their time, even if that time is minor.

They never will, of course.  I suspect that they do believe just that, though.

  • Going back to Elle's comment of June 15, 2016, I hope they do eventually implement this, but after waiting literally for years for this, I'm not holding my breath.

It's stupid that they have weight filters so guys who weight 180 lbs can see how they compare to guys weighing +- some small range around them, ie: how they compare to others in a similar condition.

As it is, I'm in the 270s right now, and have fluctuated between the 260s and 280s for years now. I need to start riding again hard after some real-life circumstances that took me off the bike for a while, but when I do, I know that the best I can do is compare myself with guys weighing as little as 201 lbs, which is hardly a fair comparison. As others have stated, people in the "normal" weight categories get a valuable service with a premium subscription, where they can compare their performance with others like them. For those of us over 200 lbs, anyone from someone at 201 lbs all the way up to the Guiness World Record holder for weight who requires a crane to lift him from his bed through knocked-down walls to be taken to the hospital is in the same class. That's stupid. And it's stupid that Strava hasn't been able to respond to all of the customers who have asked for this for several years now.

Come on, guys. Pres. Kennedy proposed a moon landing in 1961, and by 1969 the Eagle had landed. Apparently it will take a "moon shot" level of effort by Strava engineers to add some database filters. Uhuh. Ridiculous.

They'll have to continue doing without my premium membership. Apparently there are so few of us asking for this maybe they won't even notice. Still, it's the only leverage we have, and I intend to use it.

No premium fees until the over-200 folks get useful weight classes like the under-200 crowd get with their premium membership. If that never comes, then they'll never see another dime from me. I'm sorry, because Strava is useful to me and now I feel like a leech continuing to use it without paying anything, but this is just stupid, and so I'll act accordingly.

  • I have suspended my premium account until they show some love to clydes!  As stated here before, it is ridiculous that it has taken over a year and this has not been added.

  • I’m the original poster of this request. I’m a bit shocked when people claim they don't really care about this or would respect Strava more if they’d just say they don’t care about “Fatties”.

I stood by my claim and cancelled my premium membership. I still really like using Strava (I ride my MTB at least 15-30 miles a week) and am eager to see them rollout the change as requested. There is no reason why athletes/customers above 200 pounds should be classified and in reality treated any different than those below 200lbs.

I won’t subscribe unless there is absolute parity with the user experience for those below 200lbs.  We 200lbs+ work hard on our fitness we deserve the same level of performance from Strava as those under 200lbs. It’s that simple.

Elle, I look forward to an update on the timing of this.

  • I'm all about a higher weight classification. I'm 270lbs and ride a framed Wolftrax fat bike. I'd love to see what I rate against other bigger riders.

  • Any news on this Elle Anderson?
When you said you were "planning to work on additional weight filters later this year." in june last year, I was really hopeful that it we really could use it before the end of last year. Would love to know how I measure up against my peers.

  • So it's been 2.5 years and still no official word on when you'll make this change. This isn't a significant feature request. When will it happen?

  • Elle Anderson if you guys really are not planning on doing this within the next century, maybe you could just let all of us know so that we can finally put this to rest.   There are so many individuals requesting this feature and it boggles my mind that it has not been done yet.    So please Elle can you comment on what the status is ?

  • Come on Strava.  Give us an intelligent, thoughtful response to this request thread.

Can this happen?  If so, when?  If not, why not?

We're your customers.  Show us the support you claim to pride yourselves on.  Do it now.

  • There was a response a while ago.  It was deleted.  I expect that speaks volumes for what they think of this request and it should guide us on whether or not we pay for their service.  I canceled my premium--what's the point?

  • This is a planned development for 2017. Your patience with us is much appreciated and we look forward to delivering new weight and age categories for our segment leaderboard filters.

  • My response encouraging people contact Strava management for an answer was deleted, or so it seems. This, too, sends a message.

Elle, if there's a plan for 2017, please share an approximate timeframe - quarter would be a good start.

  • 'Planned in 2017' - hmm, wonder why that was deleted? It was already promised for last year. Your programmers must be getting some long miles in, because they're certainly not sitting at their desks coding.

The sooner you do it Strava, the sooner I will start using (and paying for) your service again :)

This and the ridiculous metric/imperial units set up are what's stopping me at the moment.

  • Sorry about that Andy - I didn't want the personal work emails of some of our Strava management out in public, especially seeing as work is moving along on this request! I hope you understand.

It's hard to commit to a timeframe, but we're hoping for a release in the next few months.

  • A promising update Elle, thank you.

We've heard it before though so please excuse the slightly jaded tone when I say I'll check back in June. Fingers crossed this time!

  • Elle, I understand your perspective, though realize from the outside, whether work is moving along now or whether it isn't, the communication about it has been infrequent and fairly vague. You have provided a target date now, and if that slips substantially, I hope you will also let us know.

  • Elle, Happy to hear that this is finally on the roadmap! Please let us know when this happens. I will reinstate my premium membership. And really looking forward to this feature. Thanks to all the comments helping advocate for this.

  • Bonjour,

    Merci

    Jess

  • 285 Lbs checking in. I'm waiting for the additional weight classes before I sign up for a subscription. There's no reason I should be comparing myself to people that weight almost 100 lbs less than me.

  • Yay! At least Elle announced the changes. I just looked, and yes, there are now the additional categories. They must not have gone live yet, because I did a ride this morning, and yet looking at the weight categories over 200 lbs there are no results yet for the 200+ segments for, say, the November distance challenge.

It could be that there are no results yet because they literally made these new categories live right now, who knows?

I'm about to go on another short 13 mile ride right now, and I'll check the categories again when I get back. Who knows, maybe I'll be #1 for a few minutes in the over-250lbs category?  :-)

  • First, thank you to Strava for getting this done.

However, this doesn't look quite right with historical data.

While I definitely appear in the 250lbs+ segments, so do riders that we've confirmed are listed < 200lbs (they looked up their profiles).  So some of the sorting may not be accurate.

  • I went for a 2nd ride, a couple hours after Elle's announcement, and still there are zero results in any of the new weight categories. I only checked by looking at the November distance challenge and one of the other November challenges.

Apparently the new weight categories are in there, but they're still not hooked up or something. Hopefully it'll go live for real over the next day or so.

I'm really curious to see how many folks end up in each category. I was watching the October challenges and just off the top of my head it seemed that something like 8% of the participants were in the 200+ weight category. My prediction is that 200-224lbs will account for 4-5% of participants, 224-249lbs will account for 2-3%, and the 250+lbs will account for 1-2%. It'll be interesting to see how close that is.

  • Thanks Guys!!! Had a quick look last night, and some of my results do seem to have been sorted into the new grouping - I'm listed on Strava as 242lb. Although if I'm honest, I'm running a few extra lb at the moment!!!
