Reverse an existing Strava Route

Hi,

Is it possible to reverse routes on Strava? I'd like the option to reverse routes I've ridden or created on the Strava route planner.

Regards, John

21.06.16 - So, two and a bit years later we're still no further forward with this development. Absolutely crazy!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

08/0217 - Well I've literally ran out of time waiting for this feature, having now being diagnosed with a terminal cancer. I find incredible that such a fundamental requirement for all cyclist in a cycling app simply isn't available.

  • plus 1. routebuilder is still in beta mode. as a premium and summit member for years I expect more from strava than this.

  • Earth to Strava - surely this is a quick and easy fix to implement, even in beta?

  • Aaand another vote from me, even if only to save me from running the route in reverse to generate the segment ...

  • lots of people telling us how to export and do in another tool, but there's no import to stave from what I can see so what use is it. it's shocking this is not available. the route planning in dreadful is really poor: can't even highlight the address you entered.

  • appalling this still isn't implemented. Show's Strava continues to not listen to users, and they don't have the technical capability to implement this

  • This feature would be amazing! Especially when you find out you'll have more tail wind when you reverse a route.

  • How long can a routeplanner be in Beta....luckily there are a lot other tools to choose from and maybe i stop with Strava overall. Nice to fingerdraw a route on the mobile app, but i expect more in 5 years of Beta...

  • I agree -- it does seem poor that you, Strava, haven't got onto this.  I'm trying to map out a multi-day cycling trip, and am doing this by working backwards from the end as well as working forwards from the start, to make sure I get the right amount of challenge.  The rides at the end of the trip I will need to reverse.  Yes, I can run them through another tool, but that really is a drag.  Surely this is a really easy fix?  I also agree that saying, "oh, this is in beta" is a bit slack at this point.

  • Its been 3 years and Route Builder function is still in beta mode? Are you going to commit to the Route Builder function or excuse it as beta forever?

  • Why is ANYONE still bothering to waste their time commenting on this feature request?

    Does anyone actually still believe Strava employees either

    1) Read these comments; or

    2) That the company management actually gives a $h!7 what its users want / need / request?

    As with all these (cycling) companies which achieve a significant degree of market dominance, as soon as they do, they abandon, ignore and abuse the very user base that got them there and all-but-ignore its members/users, even the paying ones (cf the recent debacle concerning Relieve - as though THAT decision was taken in order to look after anything but Strava; it certainly wasn't done in its customers' interests).

    Let's face it, as soon as another platform appears which competes head on with a functionally-rich feature-laden app - or if Garmin, Endemondo or MapMyRide get their collective acts together - many of us will willingly jump ship.

    Arrogant and contemptuous behaviour from Strava.  Time to ignore them and, where possible, abandon them ... THAT is when they'll start to sit up and take notice, not contributing to their manifestly ignored forums, being grateful for whatever crumbs they leave us.

  • @Stephen Crane, spot on. Simple feature enhancements are constantly ignored, very frustrating. It almost reminds me of Garmin, sitting back and waiting for someone else to show up. Reversing a route should be a simple enhancement. Or how about just being able to sort routes you have created as a start? Or an activity search function that actually works?

    But yes, this will be ignored too...

  • Hmm, 5 years on and still no basic ability to reverse a route? I'm a summit member and love strava, but please, this is ridiculous. I'm a software engineer so I totally understand how things get pushed, but this is route planning 101: get me back where I started.

  • Planned a route using Garmin Connect this weekend. Yep, you can reverse a route with it, why not Strava?

  • Ugh.  Built a route foolishly assuming I could easily reverse it (for some reason I thought I had before) only to find users have been asking for this for 4 years!  The base logic must be a handful of lines of code!

  • The closest I got is to download GPX file from the created route, then reverse the lat/long list, save it as a new gpx, then upload it to https://labs.strava.com/gpx-to-route

    Same idea is used to create a loop.  I just appended the reversed list of lat/long to the original route.  That way it completes the loop.

    Here is the Python script to reverse the lat/long list.

    ```
    import sys
    from lxml import etree
    with open(sys.argv[1]) as xml:
    doc = etree.parse(xml)
    NSMAP = {'ns': 'http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1'}
    gpx = doc.getroot()
    # remove metadata
    metadata = gpx.xpath('//ns:metadata', namespaces=NSMAP)
    gpx.remove(metadata[0])
    trk = gpx.xpath('//ns:trk', namespaces=NSMAP)
    for k in ('name', 'link', 'desc', 'type'):
    ke = gpx.xpath('//ns:{}'.format(k), namespaces=NSMAP)
    trk[0].remove(ke[0])
    # get the list of lat/lon
    trkseg = trk[0].xpath('//ns:trkseg', namespaces=NSMAP)
    # reverse them
    trkseg[0][:] = reversed(trkseg[0].xpath('//ns:trkpt', namespaces=NSMAP))
    print(etree.tostring(gpx, pretty_print=True).decode())
    ```

  • For Strava to say the route builder is still in Beta mode feels a bit rich given it is has been available for over three years and they have introduced many other less useful features in that time.

    My advice, buy a Wahoo GPS, which offers the functionality out of the box for free from the head unit, or link in with Komoot, or ride with GPS both of which provide excellent route builders.

  • A 5 year Beta period :) the only thing that has changed in these 5 years of Beta "testing" (or was it 6?), is that they've taken out google street view integration, which was an incredibly useful feature...

  • I would like this feature too.

    Why do we have to wait six years for such a simple function???

  • Here is a simple method:

    1) Export your Strava route as a .gpx.

    2) Read it into GPSPrune (download the JAR at https://activityworkshop.net/software/gpsprune/download.html).

    3) Click Range > Select all. Then Range > Reverse. Then File > Export GPX.

    4) Use Strava GPX to Strava Route tool to read it back in to Strava (https://labs.strava.com/gpx-to-route/).

    Happy running/riding one and all :-)

  • This is even more relevant now. The new auto-generated routes feature on iOS is AWESOME but often times I want to reverse the loop it generates due to winds etc.

    A one-touch “reverse it” button during route generation/saving is needed.

    This topic should be merged with https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/213073727-Reverse-route

  • Yet another reason (at least for routes) to switch to komoot they have a simple reverse waypoint order.

  • Yes please!! Especially with the new sync function with Garmins. You could just reverse it, save it, sync again and voila, all the correct course details in a pinch.
