  • I very much prefer the route creation on RideWithGPS.  Also, RWGPS integrates seamlessly with the Bike Tracker app.

  • Hi Michael.

The extra app, RideWithGPS, rather than Strava, for a couple of reasons.

The Bike Tracker app connects directly to your RideWithGPS account and all your routes. So getting your routes onto your phone is - start the app, select Menu, select RideWithGPS, select your route, and its downloaded to your phone. Then press GPS and Start and you're good to go. Maybe 10 seconds to do all that. Quick and easy.

Bike Tracker also works with TCX files from any source. So Strava mapping is definitely an option to use. To get the TCX file from the laptop onto the phone, I connect mine via a USB lead, then find the file and copy it over. Only a minute or two, but a bit of a hassle, plugging/unplugging leads, and not as easy as the automatic download.

I agree with you - Strava mapping is very good. Easy to use, but for me, it has two major flaws.

    1. I don't like some of the cues it generates. For example, when approaching a fork in the road, it generates a cue "Continue on .... Road". I'm approaching the fork. Is it the left or right hand fork ? I don't know. I'm now looking for a sign saying "... Road". I'm not concentrating on the traffic around me. I'm an accident waiting to happen. In contrast RideWithGPS tells me exactly where I'm going and will give a cue "Turn slightly left/right onto ... Road".
    2. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I export the route to a TCX file, none of the turn by turn information is included. So the file cannot be used for navigation by Bike Tracker. TCX files from RideWithGPS include all the cues, as do others that I use (Plotaroute, cycle.travel, ...)

But, fix these issues, and add turn by turn navigation to the Strava app, and life would be wonderful. Until then, anything else is some sort of compromise. I have looked at just about every Android navigation app, and Bike Tracker is now my app of choice - mainly because it works and its free. As the saying goes "You pays your money and takes your choice". Amazingly, sometimes you don't pay money !

  • Excellent explanation!

Sometimes you pay your money and are not happy with what you get. You can pay for RideWithGps Basic and get voice guidance, which I did try for a month. But it didn't work so well for me (probably the phone) so I didn't commit to a longer trial.

  • I use Strava to generate the routes (either form rides or with the route generator) and then I export them to RideWithGPS. I pay for RWGPS Basic ($6/month, do you hear that Strava) for this one feature. If it were included in Strava I would be willing to pay more just so that I wouldn't have to do all the exporting and then tweaking of routes in RWGPS.

  • RunGo seems to work the best.  i travel some and it is really nice to not have to memorize your route.  RunGo does not help much when you are off the route as far as how to get back but usually you can figure it out.  And it lets you know when you are back which is great.  I tried RunGo in Venice and it did fine on the easy big roads but really was not much help cutting through the small alleys but this was going to be a huge challenge for any program.  Had to stop a few times to look at the map.

Also, is is great that RunGo works w/o having your phone on the phone network.  Saved a lot of $$ overseas as you can program a route on WIFI and run w/o the phone on network.

  • I can get audio notifications that I'm on a Segment, how well I'm doing on the aforementioned Segment, but can't be told to turn left in 1 mile? What's up Strava...?

  • Strava needs to get on top of this! I just downloaded RunGo app to create a route, which was so much easier than the route builder in Strava.  The RunGo route will also upload to the RunGo app on my Apple Watch AND give me turn by turn directions. RunGo will also synch with Strava for those who want the social aspect and analytics.  I'm doing a real life test for a race next weekend, so I'll be back to comment on that experience.

  • Yea, it's hard to believe that people pay for Strava Premium when there are so many alternatives that are so much better.

  • I paid thinking this would work but hasn’t.

And have now sent emails and found this page.

Strava fail. Fix this or lose another customer that pays

  • Given the good route creation feature the vocal turn by turn navigation is absolutely missing!! C'mon Strava!!! Or do you keep not adding this feature like the heart rate alarm?!

  • I will become a premium member if this is an included feature

  • Hi..get an Edge 820 which has audio alerts via Garmin connect on your mobile. It can tell you average speed, HRM etc and also turn by turn directions, for clarity it is best with an earpiece though it is possible to hear the phone when in your back pocket.

  • I was just about to buy Premium because I thought this was a feature, but decided to double check. Glad I did. I won't be paying until this becomes a feature.

  • This is a feature that has been asked for for at least six years and is readily available in God knows how many other apps.  How is it not a priority?

  • I just moved to a new area. I’m trying to follow local routes people have loaded, but I don’t know where I’m going. I have my iPhone mounted on my stem, but I can’t figure out where I’m going when I’m cycling & looking at my phone at the same time. I’ve tried using ride with GPS or Map My Ride at the same time - I have to follow their routes and strava gets reduced to an activity log. Dangerous and a disappointment to try using strava for directions.

  • Try Route Pepper or Race Peps for audio turn-by-turns. Both work same time with Strava, so no need to sync and hassle. And the insturcions are just as good as you make them! :)

  • After exchanging with Mikko offline, I found that in Route Pepper, you have to add audio cues ("turn right" "turn left") at precise points on the course (called "pep points"). It does not act like a car GPS that would automatically tell you "in 20 meters turn left", and if for some reason you go off course, Route Pepper will not re-calculate the course and put you back on track, like a normal car GPS would do. However it is indeed an interesting app, provided that you tag the turning points with audio in the app or on the site.

  • How has this not happened yet? this will turn Strava into an all-inclusive app as soon as it happened. I have been wanting this since 2014, and have often gone to other apps, and stop paying for Strava, or just use an app, causing me to stop/start too regularly. PLEASE can you implement!

  • Please make this a feature. I have recently started using Strava and am gobsmacked that this isn't a basic feature.

I have spent so much time crafting perfect routes on my desktop for them to be redundant when I get on my bike.

  • I'm currently paying for, and running, RideWithGPS for turn-by-turn guidance (on routes created in Strava but migrated to RWGPS) and WahooFit to track my heart rate (just in case RWGPS loses its connection to the HRM). I do have Strava running during my rides but only as a backup. If everything works correctly, at the end of a ride, I upload my RWGPS file to Strava and delete the Strava recording. Mind you I am a Summit member of Strava, so I'm paying for that too!

I originally wanted just turn-by-turn guidance to be added to Strava, but now, since they've removed BT and ANT+ sensors, I now need a separate way to track HR. Why am I still paying for Strava!?

  • Please please implement this feature! I can't use the routes I've made, without having to stop multiple times on my ride to check my phone with difficulty.

I thought this feature would be a basic feature of Strava when I first joined! Not so! I'm having to use other apps instead...

  • I too would become a premium member if this functionality is included. Can't understand why it isn't, as routes are pretty much pointless on Strava otherwise, if you can't be guided on them.

  • Update from Strava support on 5/18/2020:

"turn-by-turn notifications for route navigation is not currently planned at this time."

Come on Strava! This is a safety issue. What good are routes in the Strava app if you have to keep looking at your phone or a cue sheet to see where to go? Even at that, iirc, the direction arrow in the Strava Route doesn't turn to point to the direction of travel, so figuring out which way to go is fuzzy at best. As someone mentioned above, we're accidents waiting to happen if that's how we have to use Strava Routes! Please add this NOW!
