Export Elevation data in Strava Routes files

Currently, exporting routes via GPX does not include elevation data. This means that if you use the GPX file for navigation on a Garmin 800 (or similar) the route is shown with no elevation profile.
Adding elevation dat to the GPX files would be trivial, and improve the utility of this feature.

As Elle eluded to, tcx & gpx route exports now have elevation. If you get a chance to try it out, let us know how it goes.

  • and speed data for virtual partner. It would be good if the expected speed (from my last 4 weeks average) was also exported to the garmin

  • Other sites allow this and its really useful

  • I was surprised to see this omitted from the file.

  • Hi there, any update as to when this might be resolved? When riding hilly routes it would be really helpful to have elevation data in the GPX file.

  • Is anyone at strava working on this? I really like using the global heatmap on strava, but then I have to re copy the route in a different site to get the elevation data.

  • Add me to this list.  I just found out this evening that there is no elevation data during a BKool demo.  I'd planned on buying a BKool this evening at an demo put on my my LBS when one of the BKool reps said that exporting from Strava will render a "flat route".  Since I'd actually create a few routes in BKool from Strava route exports we tested this out and sure enough flat.  My "Southern Maine Hill Tour" was completely flat!

This  should be part of the standard export.  My next search is going to be how I can fix this up in the interim (like reading the route into Google Earth then exporting from there?).

  • Glen, if you come up with a workaround, please do share.  Or better still, Strava might just add the data to the export....

  • The work around is pretty simple but annoying!!!

    Create route in strava
Export as a gpx or tcx
    Import gpx into Ridewithgps.com
Export again as you favoured type
Hey presto elevation, not rocket science. Come on strava, get it added.

  • I cannot add much to what was already said. Elevation data should be saved in the GPX file, just like other sites are doing. Would give us elevation profiles on the Edge device. Also while at it it would be trivial to include the course summary data - total distance, total elevation gain, etc. Hope Strava will listen.

  • Please, as soon as you can, add the ability to export elevation data from my Activities. Cheers,

    Mark

  • And from a different direction, I just did a short test ride today on a stationary tacx trainer with Real Live Video (RLV). This was part of Grand Alps i.e. all about the hills! and the segment I did was only 100m climb. On export from Tacx TTS to Strava, the rides now show up in Strava as having 2300ft of elevation!!!, so not necessarily an omission of data, but certainly incorrect data.

  • as a workaround I use the free online tool http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation to add elevation data to a .gpx file

  • This is really annoying but such a simple thing for Strava to do. I have another work-around, which is to use bikehike.co.uk (if in UK).

Using bikeHike also allows you to set the speed for the virtual partner. I notice that the default speed from the Strava tcx file means my VP appears to be drug fueled.

    1. Create Route and Export tcx file from Strava

    2. Open bikehike.co.uk and 'Load Route' .. loading the Strava Exported tcx File.

    3. Click 'Save Route' and resave the file (as tcx), setting the 'Average Speed' value for the virtual partner at this point if you like.

    4. Load the BikeHike tcx file to your Garmin.

  • Hi Julie and Paul,

Can you post the link here to the Strava Route where the elevation is not exporting as expected? Thanks.

  • Hi Elle,

Here is Julie's upload that didn't work.

    https://www.strava.com/activities/460844653

It was down loaded from my ride here.

    Thanks

  • Hi Paul, the elevation export feature is only associated with the Strava Route builder. Exporting the GPX from an existing activity is not the same as creating a route in the Strava route builder. Hope that clears up any confusion.

In this particular case, Your Garmin Edge 1000 has picked up elevation data using the Barometric altimeter, but the GPX version when uploaded as an activity uses an elevation service to calculate elevation which has estimated no significant elevation gain for the activity.

  • Perhaps I am doing something wrong. Elle made the point that routes created by using the Strava Route Builder should include all of the elevation data. When I export my routes to my Garmin 520 , using .tcx as directed, and then ride the course on my Tacx Vortex trainer, I can see the course contour, but no record of elevation change when I upload the activity back into Strava. It acts as if the barometric sensor is perhaps overwriting the course data. My route and my activity are below- I am uncertain how to attach the .tcx which was exported to the Garmin. Any suggestions?

  • It is easy to find instructions on how to import gpx and tcx into your Edge device. Here is one place. You could find similar how-to on Garmin, Strava and other websites. Just picked the first result from Google.

    Cheers.
