The Ability to create and save route from Segment explore

e.g. I found a segment that I like in "Segment Explore" and want to be able to save the segment, as a route. Would be nice to have an option to click and "Save as a Route" and or control click multiple segments and create a route from "Segment Explore"

From the Strava Route builder, you can enable the Segment Explore feature to appear as a visual map layer. It's not the entirety of this feature suggestion, but it may help.

To do this, go to the Strava Route builder an create a new route. From the left menu bar, click the segment icon (third from the top).

You can then create a route along any number of segments to combine them.

  • I want to take other "Athletes" segments to piece together a route.

  • I was very surprised to discover this isn't already possible. In fact I had assumed that's what segments were for.

  • Yup, exactly the same. I pretty much thought the point of Strava for cyclists was to share routes and make it easier to find trails/places to go....

I'm completely stunned that such a crap app has made it so far, yet they seem to think we should pay a premium for something that can't even do the basics right?

So uninpressed with strava i can't even put it into words.

  • Route Builder is a real disappointment. Still! Is Strava working on making it less clunky and useable.

Why can the route line not just follow the GPS track, when using athletes already completed runs and rides? It seems to have not progressed at all in the last few years. still the drawn route just attaches its self to random places and paths. building from scratch is worse than useless. Its So Frustrating.

  • @Nathanel and @J Sewell,

Can you clarify your comments, and elaborate on how creating a route from the Segment Explore feature would improve your Strava experience? Any further details and explanations would be helpful.

  • When I want to train over a whole race route for example, especially a fell or hill route that I don't know I. Can sometimes find a GPS track that someone has Strava'd. I'd like to make a route for myself to train over.

When I run a route frequently and want to save it as a route. At the moment I have to faff around with clicking along a rough line along the GPS track. It took me an hour today to do a 7 mile route! As the only way is manual the auto route is useless as it sticks to every road and odd places not along the GPS track already made by me.

It would be obviously easier if it just followed the GPS track on the map, that way itwould be quickly done.

  • Thanks J Sewell, Sounds like your feedback is more towards improving our basemap to be able to map more of the trails you'd like to run or ride.

You are welcome to send us feedback by reporting any missing trails: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216917827-Strava-s-Maps-How-to-send-Feedback

Alternately, because OSM is an open source mapping service, you can create an account and add the missing trails. We update the Strava basemap about every month to add new road and trail data.

Sorry I don't have a better solution for you at this moment, but work is always in progress to improve the mapping experience on Strava.

  • Hi,

I was looking to use strava to set routes to follow via GPS, either on my phone or on a garmin.

I have mountain biked for nearly 20 years now, and although a lot of the fun is in finding your own new places to ride and trails to hit, in this modern day and age sharing routes and trails is becoming more common as tech allows us to.

I thought strava was meant to do this, yet it seems this is a "it happens to be able to" feature rather than core content that it should be for mountain bikers.

There's nothing worse than going somewhere to ride what's meant to be an "epic trail" then getting lost, I was hoping strava would provide a simple tool to stop this.

Example:looking for routes near me I found "summer lightning, full" (see my starred segment). I couldn't get this to load as any kind of route on the app, I couldn't import it into the route builder as it didn't come up no matter how I searched. So the segment isn't a route and I can't follow it... when it's already a favourite I can't just click it and load it out on the trail?

Just typing that out again makes me nuts, it's palm through the back of the skull levels of infuriation when you find out the app that everyone goes on about seems to be missing the most simple functionality, is there a plan to fix this??? It's not even a complicated thing to fix in coding terms.

  • I'd like to re-iterate that you should be able to load a starred segment as a pre-set gps route to follow.
The idea that you have to route build it yourself is nutsIt's worse when the route builder can't find a segment that you've specifically starred.

  • there is a local 60 mile sportive that another athlete has saved on Strava as a segment. i want to be able to load this onto my garmin as a route for me to follow. is this possible?

In an ideal world I would also like to be able to edit the route particularly to move the start / finish of the route (which is a loop) as I would not need to start it fro where the sportive event started.

  • If you want to download a Segment as a Route on Strava simply:

    1. click on the big red "Compare Efforts" button on the Segment screen

2.Click on the KOM link just below the athletes name on the right hand side of the Effort Comparison screen

    3. Click on the spanner symbol on the left hand side of the Ride screen

    4. Select "create route" option from the pop up menu

    5. Save the route

The Strava segment is now a Route in your saved routes

  • Although this is an interesting solution, it does not apply to individual segment but to the whole ride. It would still be useful imo to have the same ability for individual segments like the original poster indicated.

  • I tried Brian's workaround but the spanner from the KOM link only has one option - 'Flag'

I have tried to use Segment explore within create route but its hard to predict which segments it will show. In my case I know the name of a longish segment that I want to add but there's no name based search once you're in create route.

The segment in question is quite long (super six, sevenoaks) and has a few turns so I'm resorting to having it up side by side so that I can recreate it correctly as a route. Doesn't feel very 21st century!

  • So, one of our locals posted a new trail on his Strava.

I looked at that online and "starred" it.

Next: I can see on https://www.strava.com/routes/new that if I look at my local area map just SOME segments show up, but not all, whats that about?

why can't I see all the segments in my local woods? Is it just ones I rode already that show up? I don't think that can be it as lots I know already and ride aren't there.

If I could it looks like I could save one of them as "a route".

or maybe its just not possible.

    thanks

  • This entire thread is frustrating.

There should be a button on the page of any segment to "create route".

    The workarounds are ridiculous/ incomplete.

The comments are entirely accurate that strava is stale and appears to put zero effort into development.

Hire some programmers who are cyclists and make this product better - there's so many basic, excellent suggestions in the user boards that are 100% ignored.

  • I was looking for that, I want to participate in a challenge but it is only a segment, and I couldn't create a route with it for my watch, even in the route builder (it doesn't show that segment, and even with the segment it show, you can't add them, only see them)

  • Yeah, the Brian O'Connor tip doesn't work any more since they changed route builder.  It sort of works on my own ride but when doing it for an MTB trail, Strava snaps to the nearest road and does not allow me to drag the waypoints.  This feature is not even at the beta level; Strava should just take it down.

  • I am still looking for the capability that has been covered on this thread for four years.   Is there any update?

    Desired use case:

    - Find a segment on Strava.com (in my case, a 40-mile segment as part of a bike shop challenge - done)

    - "Star" the segment (done)

    - Convert the segment into a route (??? Not possible?)

I need navigation on my Garmin 530 to follow the 40-mile segment.

I can convert another rider's ENTIRE RIDE into a course, but apparently not this one 40 mile segment.

    Help?

  • As Reid Jackson posted in April, I am having the same concern. I would like to use a segments on a very intricate single track to begin creating my own route.  I then want to add another segment that is attached, and then continue my route, connecting segments, to make a 100 mile route to run.  Manually entering points are not efficient for this project.  I just started a 30 day trial just to check this out. If it is possible, I will gladly continue to pay.
