View all Segments in Segment Explorer

I'm always looking for new segments to conquer and many times there are some good ones already defined that just don't show up on the segment explorer.  Is there any way to have a "see all segments" option?

  • Good Idea @Justin Brubaker.  Strava just doesn't seem to care much about new features. There are so many simple things that could make it better. Athlete searches limited to an area for instance.

  • The fact that Strava seem so oblivious to the customer need regarding segments explorer probably explains why many people (including many at my running club) are leaving strava for Garmin in their droves.

I find that Garmin Connect have much stronger UX emphisis to their app with greater focus on the end user.  If Strava can't get their act together, they'll continue to lose market share to the others.

  • As of May 2019 this is still an issue. I find it odd that even if you zoom way in, say in a fairly remote area where there's one and only one created segment on an awesome road, if that segment isn't popular enough it won't appear, and your search will show NO segments. This is also upsetting as there's no way to override this with a "view all segments" or "show hidden segments" option.

What compounds this issue is that someone may see this on Strava, then attempt to create a new segment where the hidden one exists, or overlap it, without even realizing it, wasting time, and bandwidth.

  • Totally agree with Phil Anderson. If the segment is there, it should appear on the map. There's a small group of riders in my remote part of the world, and our segments are now invisible to anyone wanting to ride here. Starting to question why I pay to give Strava my data.

  • Yes extremely annoying, if you want to make your environment a little more interesting for other athletes

  • Hiding segments that aren't popular seems like a hacky solution to data sensitivity.

If you really want to keep military areas out of strava results, why not track down known military zones and exclude from everyone? That seems like the real solution rather than this hacky popularity feature which just makes it so that road rides account for 90% of strava explorer results.

If you are in the military and you create a public segment on military land then it's that persons fault. They can create private segments or simply not create segments in strava if they don't want those locations exposed to the public.
Heat maps are a separate issue altogether. You can turn them off for your rides/runs/etc.

Lastly, the privacy zones feature should allow privacy for customers who want to use strava but don't want certain areas included in results.. It's really not that complicated. The software should give customers the ability to track what they want and hide what they don't.. Hiding based on popularity just makes it difficult to find segments if you aren't a roadie.

  • It's super annoying you have to find somone who has gone on the segment to view it because it does not show up in explorer 🤨 like why even have explorer... fix this asap I mean alot of the ones that don't show up are pretty damn popular aswell....😤

  • Also quite sad that those "hidden" segments are not even visible using Strava's API. :-( Otherwise somebody could make an custom segment explorer application which would show every existing segment...

EDIT: Actually got response from Strava API support that indeed if your lat & lon bounding box contains say two segments and you create a third new one (that nobody has ridden) to the area => it is not shown since it's only ridden by one person and hence not recognized as a "top ten"- segment?!

Quite weird policy indeed...how can a new segment become a top ten- segment is nobody is seeing it in the Segment Explorer?

  • Jaako, that actually makes sense IMO. They want to show segments where people actually naturally ride, vs segments that are unique to an individual or created just so someone could get a KOM (which should probably have been private to begin with). I've seen people create crazy weird segments that wouldn't make sense for anyone else to ride that specific sequence (like 3.5 laps of some big trail followed by a road ride back to the person's house).. People like KOM's so they make dumb segments to get them.

My issue with the popularity thing is if they're only showing the most popular segments it won't show hardly any off-road  segments in areas that are dominated by road biking since they won't be as popular. They should have an option in the search to show the less popular segments (excluding perhaps ones where only a single person has ridden) or something so we can find new places to ride.

  • Dear Strava developers, please, make a option to see not-so-popular segments. Thank you.

/You know, the army should prohibit the soldiers give their data and information public; it is up to them to order it and to follow this order. You are not repsonsible for it./

Or PLEASE at least lower your algorithm - so the less (not the least) popular segments can be viewed. Because now it is quite high.

    Thank you once more.

  • this is still a very frustrating issue and it's really sad and disappointing that it has been an issue for YEARS. Stupid US soldiers, yes, but also a STUPID response to it by STRAVA.

my version of what we need (in no particular order - all are number one):

    1) next n segments - user choice of 10/20/50 segments to appear in view

    2) toggle on/off segments that cross my current view but don't necessarily start and end in it

    3) filter by segment total ascent or descent, segment length, relative popularity within view (high/medium/low)

    4) ability for the segment creator to mark it as needing higher precision (ie. a narrower range of results can match the segment) eg. for when you get that situation where 2 segments are close to each other but are different length/ascent/profile/terrain underfoot

    5) provide the ability for validated organisations such as the US armed forces to create an over-riding privacy zone for specific GPS co-ordinates and prevent segments that cross those zone from appearing at all (or they could just train their personnel)

    6) ability to list my starred segments in a sortable order, and more than the top 100 - page thru all of them

  • Yeah... here in my city of 250k+ I have segments with 50-100 efforts from a dozen+ people and they don’t appear on explorer.

    Strava, this sucks.

  • My Segments don't appear in my small town of 9,000.  I created 20 segments and they don't appear so all my running friends don't even know about them.  are you fixing this issue?????

  • This has been an ongoing issue and Strava does nothing! I was once a Premium member and cancelled due to this. Retired military with 25yrs service and I can tell you Google Earth is a much bigger force protection issue than Strava. The military can/will enforce it's own control measures if it's that big of an issue.

I have created routes in hopes of enticing other MTB riders to come try a certain area that I've ridden but of course due to the stupid popularity policy they dont even show up. I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of great segments created by others as well. However, I do see hundreds of road bike routes that I'm not interested in but can't filter.

Nice job Strava at making the Explorer useless...and not listening; Brilliant!

  • The segment search / explore is atrocious!

I just want to see my local trails, but no. Can't even find what I created. Piece of shit software!

Thank god I don't pay for this...

  • Crazy. I made a bunch of segments, trying to get all the good climbs in the local area. There aren't many road riders but a decent number of tourists and I thought it would be a good resource for them. Now most of the segments don't show up because they haven't had 10 riders... kinda defeats the purpose.

  • Have to agree, the search function really needs some attention.... hopefully it will be part of the recent attention to other issues.

  • Yep I'm echoing everyone else here but it would be a lot more fun if you could explore and find every segment or at least be able to search for it.

  • Since the recent Strava e-mail says they are going to focus on their athletes, I'm adding my input to all of these threads about needed fixes in the hopes that maybe something will finally be done about them.  The Segment Explorer as it stands today is pretty much useless to me.  I try to use it to either find new segments to ride or when I want to find one I know I have ridden before but don't remember the name and the tool can't do either.  Even if I remember the approximate start point and zoom in the map there it doesn't show up, I assume because the end is no longer visible on the map.  If I zoom out so that it would cover the full segment, it doesn't show up either, I assume because other "more popular" segments fill the returned results.  Instead I have to search through all my old rides until I find one where I covered that route to locate the segment.

  • When visiting small towns, I have found that many popular tracks are not showing up at all in the segment explorer. This seems to be an achilles heel for the whole application if you ask me.

Furthermore, reading this thread kindof pisses me off as it seems Strava doesnt give many f##ks about community requests. It's abundantly clear that this is an issue that a large part of your community cares about, and yet 5 years of moaning have passed, you have provided no fix, and hardly even responded. The f##k am I paying for? Pathetic. Get me out of here.

  • What Ryan said...

It would be great to have the ability to toggle to all segments.

  • I guess nothing is changing for this segment exploring feature for a few years, based on this thread going on and on with no resolution.  Shame because I liked this app too.
