Feedback for Annual Achievement Awards

December 22nd, 2015:

As we go into the new year, where annual achievements would reset, we wanted to let you know that annual achievements have been deactivated.

We're grateful for all your feedback over the course of the year, positive and negative, and we will continue to explore and develop other ways to celebrate and incentivize Strava athletes. Thank you for understanding and have a great holiday season.

Starting in 2015, annual achievements recognize your accomplishments on running and cycling segments during the current year.

Full explanation found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

We'd love to hear your feedback on this new feature, so please leave your comments below!

January 30th, 2015 update:

To summarize what Strava has done so far to address the feedback we've received:
  • As of today, we've disabled annual PR achievements on your activities. Those activities uploaded in the past will see 2015 annual PRs removed in a few weeks once the caches have cleared.
  • A few weeks ago, trophies for 6th-10th place for the 2015 overall leaderboard were disabled.
  • We fixed how we prioritize significant achievements as highlighted in the Activity Feed, Top Results (Activity page), and Recent Achievements (Profile Page). What was happening initially after the release is that annual achievements were appearing among the 2-3 highlighted achievements in the Activity Feed and in the Top Results section of the Activity page when there were more significant overall results later on in the activity. This was simply due to faulty logic, and we changed the logic to surface the most "significant" achievements instead by prioritizing all-time achievements.

  • The Annual Achievements that remain are KOM/QOM/CR and trophies for 2nd-5th place.

We are not going to develop an opt-out feature for annual achievements. Despite the overwhelming support for such a setting, we have chosen to take other steps to address your feedback instead, allowing us to work to make this feature better. By turning off a significant number of the annual achievements we hope that the clutter will be improved, and that it will be easier to view the achievements that are most important. As you can read below, we still have a number of projects coming later this year that will also improve the situation regarding too many achievements and visibility into annual leaderboards. Please continue to share your feedback with us here.

  • please change the color of annual awards to green so we can easily distinguish the real all time awards apart from them. also, please present a tab or box just beneath the all time leader board box for the annual leader board. the way its is now is cluttering, diluting to the all time and makes it dis-interesting to look at rides. everyone I've interacted with so far has a similar opinion. thx

  • Firstly I want to say I love these new yearly KOM, it will really add some friendly competition this year :)

I wonder if the easiest way to solve the "clutter" problem to not issue any KOM/Top10 trophies to segments that have fewer than 10 people who have ridden the segment. Because yes if you go riding on Jan 1st you are going to get the KOM for every segment, because you are the only person to have ridden the segment.  By ensuring that at least 10 people have ridden the segment will greatly reduce the amount of clutter, and really you shouldn't get a KOM for a segment with just a few riders on it :)  (PR is fine the way it is, because those are your best efforts)

    Just a thought.

  • Please listen to all these opinions!!! FFS. if people care about their best times on a year they can just look at their results....it wasnt broke so dont fix it!? annoying to say the least, clogs up ride reports with "useless noise"

  • My initial reaction was that it floods out useful info in the early part of the year, but hopefully will be more useful by summer.  Overload for my easier ride today where I hit a lot of segments and most were nowhere near my best effort.

I don't really care much about the feature since I could already filter by time ranges as noted above.  What I personally think would be more useful is being able to look at segment records by year.  Like the "this year" filter, but I could put in 2012 and see how all results on it from 2012 shook out.

  • I find it all too confusing, and that it dilutes the achievements of people who have the outright times on the segment. I can understand the impetus by Strava to have yearly records for a segment, but it shouldnt be the most obvious thing on a page; maybe make it similar to the dropdown list for Overall/Men/Women/I'm Following/My Results, or maybe have another column so you can see overall and yearly in the one view.

At the moment it feels like a 5 year old running race where everyone wins a prize.

  • Getting a yearly KOM is like a useless paticipation award. My son's wardrobe is cluttered with these stupid plastic awards. You should make awards more prestigious rather than less. In my Activity Feed on my computer it showed my latest ride, where I achieved Yearly KOMs but dismissed the real KOMs I achieved. One only found out if one expanded hte ride and went through all of the segments. I find this new feature a retrograde step rather than an improvement. All of my colleges appear the same looking at the comments that are posted in our rides in hte last couple of days. You should review the titles of the rides in the last couple of days. It is damning.

  • Thank you again for participating in this feedback discussion! Your comments are being reviewed and shared and we appreciate that you took the time to send us your thoughts on Annual Achievements.

We anticipated that at the beginning of the year this new feature would be noisy and award many Strava athletes with yearly achievements. However, we believe that as soon as more 2015 segment efforts are posted, this feature will provide value and motivation throughout the year.

  • I like the idea of the annual KOM/CR PR I am just not sure about how it's being displayed. I agree with others that this should be an option you can turn on and off and that maybe a different colour would make the all time gold ones stand out more. The other odd thing is on the activity feed the mini leader board is the All time list and not the annual one? If you get an all time top ten then show the all time list if you only get an annual one then show the annual one if I get neither then the annual one will be the first target time so that one. In general I don't go for every segment I target a few and try to improve so the annual KOM will be a good starting target which will hopefully get contested harder as the year progresses. I also notice there is no annual KOM tab on the profile to list which ones you have?

I think the 2015 KOM/Top 10 storm will quickly die off as the weather picks up and riders shed their winter cloths and winter bikes and then I think this will be more useful. I have seen all the only the overall counts comments but come on that is like saying winning the World Championships or the Olympics is meaningless unless they break the world record at the same time. This is just a new annual competition nothing more or less than that it's just that the option to not enter is missing.

  • I think the best way to mitigate the 'new year negativity' is to consider implementing the following:

    (1) "Start recording the 2015 times; but the trophies only get "introduced" after a week or so. That way allows for a grace period of sorts... for everyone to not get bombarded with KOM's for simply rolling around on 'refreshed' segments." For the cyclists you could liken this to the start of a road race—where there is an initial neutral zone. For runners; it's the warm up period.

    This could be combined with;

    (2) Not issuing any 2015 trophies to segments until more than 10 [X] people have ridden the segment, and/or it has been ridden Y amount of times (HT: Andrew Smit).

Whether that will be worth attempting to implement asap or not—given the first week is nearly complete, I don't know... but it is something that certainly needs to be amended otherwise it'll be an issue again next year, and the year after that...

    Regards

  • Please add myself to the list to opt out of this new feature. I understand you need something new to add users, but hopefully you listen to existing users before we drop Strava for Garmin Connect. My suggestion is to make this feature available for premium members only and see how many actually pay for the feature. If you cannot make the option to opt out, I will then gladly cancel my premium membership I've been paying for since 2011.

  • Please loose this feature. poorly implemented.  No need for yearly KOM categorization IMHO.  a KOM is a KOM,  the year really doesn't matter.  Please turn this off.

  • Annual achievements and KOMs do not work well.  At the beginning of the year, you get a lot of nonsense clutter on activities just because certain segments have not been ridden much since the new year.  I recommend eliminating this feature or changing how "annual" is defined.  If the period over which the best times are considered is the last 12 months it might make the achievements meaningful.

  • Stupid idea, no one cares how fast they are for a certain time period, we only care about all time stats...the only ones who will disagree are the fakers who want to pretend they are the best for a day...its pointless...whoever came up with the idea clealrly didnt do tHE research...the feedback speaks for itself - BAD MOVE. if I cant eventually opt out, Im deleting not only my premium membership but my entire account...a waste of time and money.

  • When I look at my friends rides, it's hard to tell quickly if there in anything worthy of kudos because pr's and cups are hidden in the 2015 "hollow" worthless cups you are giving!
When I get these new cups I feel almost embarrassed to have received them, please stop.

Just allow people to filter by this year and stop the nonsense before all your serious cyclists go elsewhere garmin etc.

Every runner wants to beat the Bolts 100m record, no one cares who is fastest this year so far

  • Not stupid - they are responding to user requests like https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21971571-Segment-Leaderboard-should-reset-each-Year

It is very difficult to make such a large and diverse user group happy.  I think there is plenty of room to grow on this implementation, but don't fault them for trying.  Hopefully it will improve so that it is available to those who want it without cluttering the site for those who do not.

Personally I would have preferred better time filtering on the leaderboard.  I'd like to specify a date range.  The results for "this year" can be fun to look at but I'd have to catch it right at the end of the year and understand it may miss data - from folks that haven't gotten around to uploading yet or someone new joining Strava later and uploading their old data.

But that is not something others may be care about.  They may be using Strava as motivation to get out and ride and this yearly reset may motivate them to that end.

  • Why are people so adverse to change... Cool guys! If you dont like anual koms ignore them :) 12months would be perfect but it is not so bad as it is. I think that visual differences should be optimized to distinguish a all time KOM from a year KOM but i am sure they will come with feedback. Yearly also leaves space for a KOM board for each year for all time memories. All time koms are there forever.
For me it is great challenge, i will have to defend my KOMs :) do lets ride and relax! 31/12/2015 will be a day full of fast, hot rides hehehe

  • Hi Strava,

I really like the 2015 leaderboards, however, please make them the default leaderboards everywhere and make the "all time" one the 2nd option on the full view.  Having the "all time" one there is a distraction from the 2015 achievements.

PS:  I really like the "your recent times" graph, this is a huge improvement!

    Thank you!

    Bryn.

  • Hi,

I have already added a comment but I believe that I should expand my thoughts.

First off I want to compliment the Stava team for providing a great tool that is a highly motivational device  that inspires us to achieve PBs, maybe get into a top 10 and if we can, get a KOM or two. All changes over the last couple of years have added and complimented this unique Stava capability to bring out the best in people. It is the one site that I go automatically  to every morning  to see how I did and what my friends have been doing.

The reaction to this new improvement may be a reading as to whether the feature increases or decreases individual motivation.  For some it may but I believe for the majority it confuses and negates the excellent original features of Stava.  I believe that one should be able to opt out.  Then Stava would be able to gauge the market to see whether they have succeeded with the feature or not. Strava, keep changing and adding excellent improvements but be ready to reverse quickly if you receive negative feedback as you have on this particular addon. Have KOMs and meaningful leaderbords are one of the core reasons for joining Strava. Be sensitive how you change it.

  • Just writing to chime in that I too, like many others here, are not fond of the new Annual Achievements.

I've been a Strava user since 2011, and a Premium member for nearly just as long, and I've really enjoyed a lot of the features that have been added over the years -- things like the heatmaps, the route creation, and the power analysis and other training tools are great and serve to remind of why I pay to be a Premium member.

The new annual achievements things however makes me question why I am a Premium member....mainly for all of the reason that everyone here have already stated over the past few days here.  The annual achievements are meaningless to me.  Even as the year goes on, I don't see my attitude toward that changing as I'm really only interested in the all-time achievements.  And if I ever did want to know who was fastest on a segment for a the year (or week, or month) I could always filter that out anyway.

I used to be excited when I would see friends of mine that I follow upload a ride and see that they got a few achievements....then I'd click on their ride and notice that maybe they got an all-time top 10, or a personal best or whatever - something that meant something.  But now, I 30, or 40, or 60 trophies after their rides I don't even bother to click as it's annoying and a waste of time to see that it's all just see these meaningless annual things.  So now I've stopped clicking on people's rides to see what they've done.

Everyone I've talked with in my riding circle of friends is rolling their eyes at this new "feature".  I honestly haven't talked to a single person who has said, "wow! what a great idea! so glad they implemented that!"  Everyone has literally echoed some version of "it's stupid", "it's meaningless", "it's annoying"....

It hasn't added any value to me and it has made Strava more annoying than it has been.....chalk me up as another one who opt out of seeing it the annual achievements in a heartbeat if possible.

    Thanks for listening :)

  • I find the 2015 achievements quite annoying and distracting.  It simply clutters up my results and takes away how I really measure up to other cyclists.  I wish I could opt out of this.  But, if Strava insists on keeping this feature, please make the 2015 cups, etc. a totally different color scheme (i.e. green) to help lessen the confusion.  Thank you.

  • Strava is a wonderful site, but as you will have gathered from the overwhelming majority of comments on this page, your members do not like these "annual KOMs". And it's not because we're averse to change - most of us are quite used to ongoing changes to sites like Facebook, Strava, etc. It's because this change degrades the performances of your members. As someone pointed out, it's like getting an achievement award for placing 11th in your school race.

You should also note that many of the strongest complaints are from your PREMIUM members. My wife and I both willingly pay for our Strava membership, because we get a lot of benefit out of it... But these 2015 KOMs and QOMs are genuinely annoying, degrading, non-meritocratic, and frankly a very silly idea.

Next time you plan on doing something like this, I suggest you trial it (with a representative sample of hard-core, paying members) first. You might want to fire whoever came up with the idea in the first place (my STRONG suspicion is that they're not a hard-core rider... no serious athlete would consider it an achievement to have the best time "of the year so far"....).

Anyway, hopefully you can undo the damage!

  • I really like the new yearly KOMs and PRs. It keeps me motivated, and yes, you get a flurry of them this time of the year, but that will settle down as the year progresses. As I'm an ageing cyclist it was discouraging that I can't achieve the times I got some years ago, and now I can compete against myself for the year. Good move by Strava.

I would really like a small enhancement, and that is to have KOMs for the Strava age groups. These should be all time KOMs for the age group, and appear in the users KOMs/CRs tab. I might have a chance at a KOM if all the younger people are excluded.

  • After reading days of feedback I think the only way strava will do anything about the fake kom mess is to cancel my premium.there are to many wanna be's that can't get a real kom that like the new fake 2015 kom's. Let them have there fake kom's, I am just not going to pay for it. Join me and cancel you premium

  • No thanks, getting KOMs for riding trails during the summer break when half asleep is silly.

Adds to the clutter of an already over cluttered scoreboard

Eliminate multiple segments and overlapping segments please , it's starting to become ridiculous and a competitive app that also has an organisational forum /glimpse /watsapp type interface will crush strava if they don't wake up to themselves should it be released.

  • i really dislike year KOMs, there should be a way to turn them off, those you like it could still see it.

It serves no point that i can see besides serving some egos, and i get that it can bring those that only can compete on January 1st, and it's a business, but please let the rest of us that just want to check progression turn this off. It simply does not let me see my evolution, to do that i got to open "my results" and compare the dates. Before it was cleanly presented.

  • I'm not a fan of the 2015 KOM program. If it was 2015 PR I think the up roar would be muffled somewhat. I would be in favor of being able to turn it on or off. I would not have it turned on myself. I have yet to talk to someone who likes this program.

    Thanks,

  • I gave it a few days but it is just too much clutter.  I ended up using adblock plus to turn off the yearly KOM icons, with this filter:

    strava.com##[class*="icon-yr-kom"]

They are still called out in top results, but at least I can scroll through activities and find the achievements that are important to me.  I'll probably turn the filter off late in the spring when the amount of yearly records should have dropped off.

  • I really like the 2015 leaderboards, however, please make them the default leaderboards everywhere and make the "all time" one the 2nd option on the full view, or possible two leaderboards side by side (separate columns and colors).  Having the "all time" one there is a distraction from the 2015 achievements.

Another way would allow the user to control whether they want to the all-time leaderboard or yearly (or any other classification) to be displayed when first viewed.

PS:  I really like the "your recent times" graph, this is a huge improvement!

    Thank you!

  • It has all been well detailed in the comments below but please add me to the list of those who would like to be able to opt out of the annual achievements clutter. Yes it will diminish as the year goes on but come 2016 the same overload will happen all over again. It's reminds me of finisher medals/t-shirts given out these days to all to inflate the price of race entries. You know, those same medal sthat get thorwn in the bin on the way home or used to clean your bike and then thrown in the bin shortly after. Keep the KOM's/Top 10's rare to keep the motivation to achieve them - the current system does the opposite.
