  • Ain't nothing Shady about that answer John. I was thinking along the same lines with other issue. I wish Strava would feed us straight info. Soon there will be forced payed membership or a boat load of adds. I'd opt for the ads. Pissed I can't upload my Diamond-backed rattler I saw tonight. I knew I could do it from the app but didn't: who would have ever thought you couldn't from PC. (that's not a question, or is it?)

  • Although I appreciate Shady John's hypotheses, the simple answer is that we have a finite amount of engineering resources and we have not yet had the bandwidth to embark on this project. We have a full plate of projects in development currently, but we'd very much like to get around to adding photos to the web in the future. Thanks for your patience!

  • Guess it's time to  cancel my premium membership when this month expires. There are other sites that have the resources to post photos over the internet. I will go back to basic membership. Overall this site is good, and focusing on more bells and whistles is the choice of the site. Since I don't need anymore bling, paying for this site is no longer where I will put my resources.

  • I know I can add photos from my mobile phone, but I usually take them with my camera (superior quality and I can take them one-handed while riding, which I can't do with an iPhone).  It seems unnecessarily complicated to have to import from the camera to the computer, then from the computer to the iPhone, then upload from there.  Surely it ought to be possible to add my photos from the computer, which is really the main medium for viewing Strava files.  I would have thought it a straightforward thing for Strava to program?  Perhaps this is a planned update?

  • Hi Elle,

Thanks for the reply.  I guess I must have struck a nerve--you've been silent on this topic for months.  While I appreciate that Strava has to prioritize features, can you share an example of a feature that you feel is more important to implement than this?  And do you not agree that this would be technically very easy to implement?

Let me share something with you.  I've been using Strava for about 3 years.  At first I got excited when I got new PRs and got ranked on segments.  But inevitably we grow older and less competitive, and even without that, as n increases, we are less likely to get new PRs (not to mentiion KOMs).   So the competitive features of Strava are just not that important any more.  It is now mostly an exercise log and, more importantly, a social site where my community and I can share what we have done, where we have been, and what we have experienced.  Comments and photos enhance the sense of community, and bring us back to the site.  If what you said is true--that your staff just can't find the time to implement this trivial feature--then you really need to rethink your view of what value Strava brings to its users.  There are all sorts of exercise loggers out there, but you, Strava, have a leg up on these by providing a full-fledged community for riders and runners.  It would be a shame for you to let this advantage erode away because you failed to grasp the true value you bring to your users.

If you truly intend to implement website photo uploading, then you really owe it to your users--and perhaps more importantly, to yourselves as employees and stakeholders in Strava--to prioritize this feature.

  • I've commented on this subject a number of times and finally got weary of commenting without any feedback from Strava but the last message from Shady John really reminded me, again, of how important being able to post photos is to many of us. He really hit the nail on the head. as a way over the hill senior citizen I still get pleasure from being up there on the leaderboards, getting some PR's, and once in a blue moon a KOM but the social aspect of Strava is far more important to me now. I formed a club on Strava for local riders only, something that none of the other clubs had done, generated some new routes, and went on a campaign to get more people out for our groups rides (and rides of other local groups) but the one thing that was missing is posting photos from the desktop. I share rides & info with riders all over the world and I am constantly asked what is it like to cycle in California, a place where we can ride year round, in the mountains, etc. Very few of our local members post photos, something that people in other parts of the country and world constantly ask us to share, we don't post photos because it's just too darned difficult and cumbersome. AND, most of us are using Garmin or other GPS, NOT smart phones. I started posting some photos and videos of our rides on YouTube.com & then transfer them to Facebook.com, the quality is much better than what people with phones post to Strava but it would be so much nicer to be able to post our photos to Strava. Our weekly group rides are more social than hammerfests although we do ride & climb hard at times, most of us are more interested in the ride than the PR's and we enjoy seeing photos of other's around the world also. Thanks to some developers outside of Strava I've been able to create our own challenges, an ability that Strava itself has never offered. I'm not going to threaten to dump my Premium Membership or boycott Strava, I find it it an important resource to our cyclists and I believe in paying for the service that Strava provides but I still would like to sees you add the ability to post photos from the desktop, for many of us it is a very big priority.

  • Alright, at first I thought this was kind of lame trying to turn Strava into facebook, but its actually kind of cool e.g. showing a recent tour + pics to my mum (who's not going to see them on instagram!), the photos are (sometimes) in their actual locations along the tour so it tells a kind of story.

    Issues I've had so far:

    - on a tour without mobile reception, there's no real way to post pics to instagram until I get back, so they don't sync (outside the 30min window). I guess instagram must strip the original timestamps completely out? or you've just gone for post-time instead of capture-time for some other reason (capture time would be way better for anyone using a mobile to take the photos though since they've usually got GPS-synced time)

    - cannot upload from web, this makes it really awkward to add images from a regular camera... i have to get them onto my phone somehow first which is a big pain (even the instagram option is out, since you use post-time not capture-time, or instagram strips it, or whatever)

    - would be good to allow sync from other services like Flickr or Facebook etc, especially those that keep the image capture time available, or let you set it (Flickr / facebook respectively) so you can make sure the images show up in the right activity at the right location

  • one more: just grabbed some shots off my camera, synced via Apple's Photostream to my phone so I could upload them to an activity. I confirmed the dates/times in the images are correct, but after editing the ride and adding these images to it, they don't show up on the map at locations along the ride like those I took on my phone do.

Maybe you're using some date other than the EXIF "capture date", even for photos that I am quite sure would retain that info (I don't believe Apple strip that info for photos transferred via Photostream)

  • Any update on when we can expect to be able to select multiple pictures at once from the camera roll on mobile rather than having to do this one by one? I'm using photos more and more as they really give life to a ride but adding them one by one is incredibly tedious.

  • Please add zoom functionality by pinching gesture. Something like when you view photos in Facebook. You can pinch gesture to zoom in. Some photos need to zoom in to see some details more clearly because our phones do not have big screens like tablets!

    Thanks.

  • I'd like to add my weight to the request for photo upload via website.  It seems a silly omission given it can be done using the app.

I use a Garmin and usually take pictures with either iPhone or stills from a video (Fly6 or GoPro).  To add photos at the moment I load the ride via Garmin and edit it on the iPhone (after importing any photos into Photos).  Not that much of a hassle but still,  why not via the website?  Surely this this is a relatively trivial feature to implement.

  • why oh why can we add pictures from a phone app but not from a laptop. i use a garmin forerunner ten so don't/can't take pics with that i don't take my phone as its a business phone and i cant afford to loose it or the stress of trying to replace it.so i tag along with a crappy camera that i can replace quite easily only to be unable to upload them to here.

  • Gidday guys - there's a workaround... you need to get the photo to your phone, and then you can edit the ride and attach a photo.  Its not ideal but it does work, albeit at the cost of double handling.

  • Hello, here's an update regarding minor changes to viewing photos on the iOS and Android app as well as the added ability to caption:

When you click to view photos on the Strava mobile app, you will find a new functionality to scroll through photos if there are multiple photos attached. For your own activities, you can use this new scrollable view to add captions to your photos.

    Enjoy -

Give a good software developer a few hours and this silly omission would be corrected.

  • Hi Elle,
I just want to say thank you for the captions function.

I'm not a programmer nor do I know much about the various considerations that must be made prior to introducing a new feature, but I suspect it's not quite as easy as it seems.

Thank you and everyone at Strave for a really cool app and for everything you do to motivate us to get out and ride!

  • Stumbled on this thinking I could figure out why it wasn't obvious where this feature is in the web interface, and, oh, wait it's really not there.  Really?  Really?  I know it's the 21st century and all but maybe you could add this 20th-century capability.

  • I really missing the feature of upload photo from strava website.

I don not use android or iOS , I use a gps to record my tracks and take photos using a handycam..

Is very, very , very annoying copy the photos to my android and then add one-by-one ... very, very unusable if you plan upload +5 photos...

Please add the website upload photo feature!

  • Yet another vote for uploading via PC/web.

Just tried to instigate a request for this facility and been referred back to this so for what its worth I will attach it here:

There has been a lot of discussion regarding adding photos to an Activity - from a computer/PC/Laptop via the Website - over a long period now. A lot of users want this and seem to be getting frustrated at it not being available. [See 'Photos on Strava (iOS and Android app)']. However I have not seen a formal request for for such a facility. Please can you add this feature. After all, users can upload photos to their profile from a computer without a problem.......
