Add Photos from the Strava Website

Some of us have a windows phone, and while my first preference would be for an officially supported windows phone app with the full feature set, I doubt that is coming any time soon.  As such, it would be nice if we could add pictures from our own files from the web site rather than having to deal with Instagram.  I don't always upload Instagram photos in the time window allotted.  Truth be told, the only reason I have an Instagram account is so I can have my ride pictures show up in strava.  I would probably just close my Instagram account if you added manual file upload for ride pictures to the web site.

  • Without reading every response in this thread, it seems completely ridiculous that such a simple feature isn't available. Does Strava get money or some other benefit from Instagram for not enabling simple web browser upload and forcing people to use Instagram if they want to upload photos to an activity?

  • +1 Please add this feature.  I like to take pictures with a real camera and I'd like to post them on Strava.

  • ... Même en France nous ne comprenons pas pourquoi il est toujours impossible d'ajouter des photos depuis le PC !
... Even in France we do not understand why it is still not possible to add photos from the website !
Thanks to add ASAP this feature.

  • It's been mentioned before but it bears repeating -- upvote the original post. That's one thing that really matters as it dictates the position in the issue list. This item is still about 150 upvotes away from making it to the top 10 featured list.

  • Adding my vote to be able to add photos via the website.

If I can literally drag and drop a .TCX file to upload it, the ability to do the same with a photo wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

  • We really need this feature, how hard can it be?

  • I was a paying customer. But not anymore until this issue is solved. What would happen if everyone decided to stop paying???

  • Adding another vote for this functionality. As a Windows PC and phone user, I don't have the option of using the Strava app.

  • I have at times used the Strava app on my phone to record rides, but I currently use a Garmin to record the rides, and the rides get transferred over to Strava automatically when I upload the rides on my PC. It is a total and complete joke that I can't add photos from a ride using the PC web page. In fact, this morning I took a photo during my ride using the Instagram account on my phone, the same Instagram account that's supposedly connected to Strava, and yet since I didn't use the Strava app to record the ride, the photo of course doesn't show up.

This is a complete joke. Oh, btw guys, when Elle says something is planned for later, what this really means it that it's never going to happen. We clydesdales have been asking for something like 4 or 5 years now for Strava to make more weight categories than simply having everyone over 200 lbs being lumped together in one category. They went from telling us they couldn't do it, to it's difficult, to they're planning on doing it shortly, to it's still never been done, even though there's plenty of demand for it, and no particularly good reason for them not to do it.

Good luck getting this one. I restarted premium again, despite deciding years ago not to renew premium until they made over 200+ lbs into more than one weight category. Now I'm up against this particularly braindead limitation of only getting photos addable to rides if one uses the Strava app on the phone. This is just stupid. I can do almost anything I want on the PC, in a web browser, with my rides, segments, routes, etc. What exactly is the holdup with simply adding photos from the Strava web page? Guys come on, this is 2017. If this were still the 90s I could see not having implemented something as simply as adding a photo yet, but Jesus, we're like 15 years passed the point where this should be easy to do.

  • I like Strava.

    I have a Garmin Edge 500.

To upload data I plug the Garmin into my PC and hit "upload". Job done.

    I like photographs.

I have a digital camera. Cheap and cheerful, but it does the job.

I plug the memory card into the side of my PC and copy/cut/paste to upload the pictures.

    I have a phone.

But it's old. A Nokia C1. It doesn't support apps like Instagram and Strava so I can't share photographs with other Strava users.

Strava? Please, it can't be that difficult. Just sort us all out with a method for uploading photographs directly from a PC (which is where I manage my photographs) onto the Strava website. Maybe insist they're compressed, or limit the number? But please! I can't afford to buy into new technology just to share photos, I just want to be able to use my cranky old PC with my cranky old camera to share images of "stuff that I saw on my ride today" with other users who are interested in seeing that stuff. I know there are people who are interested because when I mention seeing certain things I get asked "where are the photos". It's a bit of a bind to have to explain (yet again) why I can't share stuff.

I see people above mentioning "updates". But there has been little in the way of any announcement through activity feeds. As far as I can tell there were no forums thronged with users demanding a new look to the activity feeds, nor were there queues outside Strava Towers demanding an end to chronological feeds, yet for years now there has been a steady stream of users going as far as dropping their premium membership in protest at the lack of direct photo uploads.

Throw us a bone here, please!

  • @ Steve Cutcomb: the 261 count that you mentioned is probably 2 or maybe even 3 or 4 times that number. The have reset the counter in effect at least twice by moving the 'conversation' to a new thread where we can all share our thoughts and feelings, anew and refreshed... sounds so inspiring...

    We are all still waiting...

I can't find it on this page. Did they removed it?

  • Dear Elle

It's been over two months since you told us this facility would be available within a few weeks.  Since then, despite numerous requests, you haven't managed to provide a single update.  People have been asking for this for well over two years.  Please tell me I can expect it as a Christmas present from Strava ... because otherwise I've had enough, and this Strava user is going to close his account.

    Best wishes

    Paul

  • Elle

When you say "coming soon", what exactly does that mean?  Three months ago you said it would be "in a few weeks", and nothing has happened.  "Soon" is even more vague.  We need something more definite ...

  • It's 2017 and I still can't upload pictures from my camera to a ride via the website. WTF seems like most every other website (including strava competitors like ride with gps) have this feature. Beyond that the interface for photos in the app is really basic and lacking even the most common features like rotating pictures. I couldn't figure out how to add a couple more pictures once I'd added a few it seems the option to add more isn't easy to find. RWGPS provides better features anyway, strava seems focused on phones and people that care about KOMs, whatever I guess.

  • One use case, perhaps marginal, that is not supported well by the phone app, is adding a photo to an older ride.

From the browser I can get back to rides that are years old easily, but I can't add a picture.

From the phone app I can add pictures to recent rides, but wading back through hundreds of older rides ... well, I haven't tried it, so it might work, but it would be extremely tedious.

Since I use an iPhone, I'd be happy with a calendar view of my rides that let me quickly pull up a ride from, say, July 2015.

Bottom line, lack of feature parity between the browser and phone apps seems to be the underlying issue. Any single feature gap is likely to result in a request to close it. [For instance, aside from no photo uploading in the browser, my two big nits right now are lack of cadence and temperature data displays in the phone app ... why?]

  • +1 on support for adding pictures to my rides after the fact. I have tons of photos that have yet to be paired to my rides. As part of promoting the sport, photos are great advertising.

Full support in the web interface is ideal, but API is a fine start if you're pinched for time, Strava.

  • So you can't upload a photo to your ride, eh?

So please open a case, Have some $60,000/year engineer add my photo (above) to today's ride for me. I'm a premium member so I should get high priority.

Let me know when you get around to it.

    PLEASE DO THE NEEDFUL!

  • I want to add a third party photo (taken of a race I was in) to my activity. I have the photos on my computer but not my phone yet... I upload the photos from my computer to Google Photos and they now show in my Google photos on my phone. Now I can add the photo to the activity using the Strava Android App. NOT! Navigating to photos from Stava does not list the photos uploaded into Google Photos showing on my phone in Google photos. If I choose the share the photo from Google Photos then Stava does not appear as an available app for that action.

My question is therefore what means is there for attaching a third party photo (yes I have paid for it and own the right to use it) to my activity. Uploading to my phone does not provide access to it. Having it on my computer relies on the browser interface that doesn't support adding photos. Is the only method to post to Instagram first?

  • Wow, didn't realize I have to turn on Strava on my iphone and take a photo from there as the only method. Really? Why isn't this a simple coding fix. Otherwise gotta have Instagram? Really? No wonder I don't do paid Strava. You don't respond to requests. Must get your customer service strategies from Garmin who is equally unresponsive.

So for you Silicon Valley techies. Can you invent a better "Garmin" and a better "Strava" ? Cyclists and Runners would rejoice. Think about it....

  • I support this request, too. There is an additional reason I want to be able to upload photos via the website: I often crop them and/or do some other elementary processing on my PC.

  • This is truely insane. Veloviewer now has the ability to upload elevation profiles to an activity via the Strava API. This is in the API, although not turned on for every developer. So the functionality is available just not turned on...

  • +1 Yes please add photo upload from the Web Client. I don't have and probably never will have and Instabookgramface account :-( It seems so simple even for a one man company.
