Beacon for Garmin has just been released. This means, that if you own a compatible Garmin device, you can share your real-time location with family and friends.

To use Beacon with a Garmin device, you will need to have:

    - Strava mobile app
    - Strava Premium subscription
    - Garmin Connect mobile app
    - Strava Beacon compatible Garmin device

You can learn how to set up Beacon for your Garmin device for iOS and Android

Continue to leave your feedback for Beacon here, but if you are having technical difficulty, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • Please add the ability to share Beacon info from Apple Watch. I use my Apple Watch to start/stop all my runs. Please consider adding this function to the Watch app. Thanks! Keep up the great work.

  • My wife doesn’t have a smart phone so the texted link requires her to re-type it in her browser. Is there a way to use an email address rather than a cell phone number as a contact? Will that work?

  • It would be really nice, that if in addition to using Contacts and a permanent link, if we could designate another strava user that we are "friends" with as a permanent safety contact, that lets them see our activities any time they log into strava, so we don't have to send a link every time.

  • I would like to see this option for friends to track you within the Strava app rather than as a stand alone web browser and be able to see multiple friends.

Say I want to join my friends for a ride part way in. I get to the meeting point but need to know if I am ahead of them, or behind...

This feature would also be valuable on large group rides where there is thousands of riders (Brisbane to gold coast 100km ride). If you lose someone finding them in a crowd is impossible.  If you could see a blip for your nominated friends on your phone you could instantly see where they are.

Yes I could use 'find my friends' but not everyone uses an iPhone..

I notice Garmin have just introduced 'group track' as a feature on the 820. As many of my friends either have a 520 or use the strava app on their phone, that feature isnt practical.

  • For me data is included in my subscription, but text (SMS) cost $0.30!. So I would like to select contact by email and then use hangout or email for free (I used android). Other solution could be to not be forced to send the Beacon link at each activity (twice a day), but to have a permanent link.

But congratulation for this feature, I hope it will work also for me soon, I'm back to premium just because of it.

  • Just like many others before me, I would like to have a list of approved contacts that have a permanent link that shows them my current (or last recorded) activity status whenever they click on it. This way I don't need to send my wife a text every time I start an activity. Sure, the choice to send a text or not send a text is good for certain activities, I would maybe like to turn off the beacon for small activities of no interest, but for the majority of them, I would just like her to have a link bookmarked that she could just open in her browser and see my status.

  • Elle,

I know you mentioned this feature a while back, and I am glad to see the progress.

I did want to highlight again the feature I miss from Runkeeper - The ability to have a notification automatically sent out when I complete a ride.

My wife knows I commute to work each day, and now I manually text her my arrival each time. Many people have loved ones that know when their rider leaves, but it would be nice to send notice that they arrived at their destination, when hitting "Finish/complete" an auto notification would be nice. Otherwise, this is duplicative to "Find my friends".

  • I would like to see the beacon feature being able to be turned on from the Apple Watch, Garmin watch or Tom Tom. Many users of Strava use their watch now to start and finish their activities.

  • I think this is a great feature. I have used it a few times to track my husband during races.

I was very impressed with how little battery life it uses.

A few things I miss that would be great if it could be added:

    1)  Distance of activity (similar to "active time")

    2) The ability to view the activity in the Strava app - as a Strava user myself I would prefer everything Strava in one place instead of in a browser

    3) Following on point 2, it would be nice if you could have default settings that Beacon always shares your activity with selected friends in real time without having to set it up before each activity.

  • Beacon is great and my wife said she will rest easier knowing that she can find me this way if I am running late from a ride. So, this feature actually prompted me to upgrade to premium.

    Question/Request:

Rather than requiring a text message with the current users unique location ID to a few contacts, can a 'beacon' link be added to a user's 'Overview' page that can be accessed by 'approved' contacts or 'followers'?  A single 'beacon link' would simplify communications with loved ones and offer them a single location to which they could always visit to find the athlete.

Many riders are using a workaround to employ Strava that involves employing an older iphone to connect all of the required cadence, speed sensors, etc. and then connect that iphone (not on a cellular network) to a droid phone that is acting as a hotspot. Thus, the iphone cannot send a text message, but is being employed as the Strava recording device over wifi.

    Thanks for your consideration,

    Scott

  • The Beacon feature is definitely a step in the right direction, particularly in light of recent attacks on female runners in broad daylight. However, until the Beacon can notify the emergency contact of a stoppage, it is not really going to be a solid safety feature. I know absolutely nothing about programming or app design, and I apologize for seeming critical of something that may be difficult or impossible to implement; however, if it is workable, it seems like it should be added to the feature. Perhaps the user can set a time frame for an alert message (five minute increments, or similar...)

    Thanks for all you do--

  • Love Beacon.  Just started using it.  I send my wife a Beacon and she can easily see where I am and watch the dot move around.  Very cool.  Great job!

One thing though, perhaps checking your verbiage on the info that Beacon sends out could be changed ever so slightly.  Today my wife got a message that was something like this:

update hadn't been received from this athlete probably do to being out of range or the battery may have "died"

Operative word was "died".  It kind of jumped off the screen at her.  When viewed on a small iphone 6 screen, it may be a little misleading.  :)

    Thanks for the vine!

  • I'd like to email notifications rather than text.

Also, my girlfriend uses a Windows Phone. She gets the text with link, but the Beacon webpage is blank. I don't expect Strava to make a Windows Phone app due to the small market but they should ensure the Beacon site works on all browsers.

  • Whenever I've used this feature, my safety contacts can't see my GPS coordinates. This should be an essential feature, but maybe I'm just blind.

  • @Alan Solot: If you have an Android app, a work around would be to turn Beacon ON, but not select a contact. Then when you click the button to send a Beacon message, the app drawer will pop up and you can share the link in other ways. If you are on an iPhone, then you would need to have a contact selected, but when you go to send a text message, just copy the beacon link and do not send the text. You can then paste that link in an email to your wife.

@Joey Widener: Thanks for the feedback on the Apple Watch. We have heard that suggestion a few times now so that feedback has been passed to our Product Team that worked on the feature.

@Big Gravy: Beacon is live for all members. Please make sure your app is on the latest version, v4.22

  • @John M., lots of folks have been asking for something like Beacon since 2013. so there is a demand.  I hope it works well.  Oh and I think I have uploaded pics from my PC, but group challenges and date range filtering and other features are important as well

  • A valid concept to include in the app I suppose, but I'd never use it.  I use a Garmin, not the Strava app, and if I was to use some sort of phone-based tracker I'd use something else.

  • @Richard B: Yes Beacon only works while recording with your Strava mobile app, but we are working on the integration for Garmin. You would need to have turned on Beacon, send the text, and have the app recording for your location to be shared.

@ Scott P: Thanks for the feedback on the unique link in a text. This setup allows each link to share location data for only the period of recording, rather than showing continuous location (whether you are recording or not). This setup also gives you a choice to share your location for every activity, as there may be some instances you may not want to. This also serves as a reminder that you are sharing your location with selected people. This is the first iteration of Beacon, so there may be changes in the future.

@Alba A: Since you are on Android, if you do not select a contact and try and send a Beacon text, the app drawer will open and you can chose what app you want to share the link to. This will allow you to send the link via email or another app.

@Spencer O: Since Beacon allows you to send a link to any person (regardless of device or Strava use) you can share to people that are on Android or a computer. This would not be the case with Find My Friends. Beacon also utilizes the Strava app to give more metrics on your activity, rather than just your location. From my testing, Beacon updates location more frequently, and with more accuracy, than Find My Friends.

@Terry M: Please submit a support request so we can look further into the issue you are experiencing.

@Steve D: If you are on version 4.22 of the app, then you will see the Beacon icon on the record screen. Check your app version, and if you are on v4.22, try restarting your phone. If the issue persists, please submit a support request so we can investigate further.

@Sarah C: The recipient view of Beacon does state your current recording state: Recording, Auto-Paused, Stopped, Not Recording, Saved, Discarded (Activity), Not Started (Recording), Disabled (Beacon). Beacon also states your battery %.

@Jimmy H: Thanks for the feedback on the language, I'll pass that forward.

@Giant R: We realize there is a potential for many other uses, like social/events. This is on our radar.

@Chris H: The link should work with any browser. It does not need to be on an iPhone/Android. Did she try refreshing the page? If so, and the issue persisted, please send a support request so we can look into it further.

@Jirka C: At this time Beacon will only work for being sent by Premium Strava users. For her scenario, a different app may be of more use.

  • I had an incident today where I left my phone at work and didn't want to go back for it but wanted to be able to track my husband's ride home. Unfortunately, even though I have a Strava account, I am unable to track his ride unless I have that link that is in the text message. It would be great if there was a backup way to view someone's ride as their safety contact without having to receive a text.

  • I like this feature. I have been using Road ID for quite a while. Because Road ID is free, I suppose Beacon will not be a Premium feature for long.

But one of my contacts also receives a link that does not lead to a map. I tested it with my iPhone and that worked fine. But my contact's Samsung Android doesn't get the map.

  • Beacon Prompted me to upgrade to Premium as my family and I think it is a really good safety feature.

I thought I should make you aware that I am unable to send a message to two of my safety contacts, via all three of the options available: Google Chat, Facebook Messenger and my phones messenger. Their contact details are correct. Upon selecting the service It prompts me to set the service as the default SMS service on the handset. When I click send it converts the message to an MMS and then fails to send or just simply fails to send. Any advise!?

  • I am a veteran that is a part of a riding program called Ride2Recovery.com.  All disabled VETS and fellow riders in the program use Strava as a tool to track all riders during the week on their speed, progress and distance.

My wife complained that our iphone tracker app was not accurate and delayed.  I began the Strava premium during a recent 50 mile ride in Barrington, IL and she along with many others people loved it.

***Main issue*** and responses to other posts:  My main issue with the beacon  on the premium is that you can accidentally hit the stop button and the beacon shuts off and will NOT.. I say again, the beacon SHUTS OFF AND WILL NOT come back on!!! Even though you resume your ride with Strava. the beacon stays OFF!  When this happens, my wife as like (@Jimmy Hoffa) she and my EMT family get the following message: "update hadn't been received from this athlete.  Probably do to being out of range or the battery may have "died"  The sad thing, the rider is out working their heart out while back at home, concerned people start calling you about are you okay?  The rider's first words are what? I am fine!   Strava, this is Not a good flaw!  There should be an immediate fix for this?  The info button to change modes is way too close to the stop button and causes for my stop button to get hit by accident.   SO #1, put the mode button at the top, not near the stop button.  #2, If the stop button is hit, a rider shouldn't have to end the ride, restart and resend new link to all safety recipients. This has happened way too many times and is a pain in the Ace.  It is like calling wolf to your safety recipients and you don't even know it unless you catch yourself hitting the stop button and resuming or you get a recall. #3, There has to be away that a rider can hit a solid pause manually.  Like today, I refused to hit stop during my 2 rest stops.  During my stops it kept going from autopause to unpause, repeat... and I ended up with 10+ more minutes of non-riding which was actually just unpaused time while I used my phone with movement.  This is not a safety feature, but should be worked into the #1 issue so a manual pause stops Strava from recording your time progress, but still shows your location.

@Lenny Lessel:  Strava beacon does drain my iphone in 2.5 hours.  I am sure Strava  will work on this.  For me, I place my phone battery on "Low Power Mode"  I picked up a portable battery phone charger for up to 3x's for under $20.00 which all riders should have for safety while riding.

@Scott Phelps @SarahCailean and @Alban Auzill:  Text and Data concerns:  Yes, Strava gives you a Text that you may send up to 3 people.  My wife does not have a smart phone right now, so I copy and paste the link and message into email and FB messenger.  Small extra step, but your peeps will still get the link and can follow you.  With that said, you can have more than 3 people watching.  You can even send more texts via copy/pasting the link.

I close with a comment back to @John M:  Sir, safety may not be a top priority to you.  If a rider happens to crash off the roadway where nobody sees them, they may lay there until they are overdue for their check-in or for them to arrive at home.  If a no-show does happen at the finish line of a ride or a scheduled check-in does not happen, at least the safety contacts can immediately respond.  Strava gives them a tool to find out where the rider is and get themselves including emergency personnel if needed to the aid of the rider.  All it is going to take is saving 1 life and it will all be worth it.

Okay Strava, get that "Stop Button issue fixed and it will be a good product!

    Thank you!  "Steve Gray"

  • @Ashley Dale: When I upgraded to premium, I activated the beacon.  When I hit record for my ride it asked for 3 contacts to send texts to.  If you are not using texts, use just anyone in your address book and click send text.  Instead of sending the text, just copy the link and message, close your text app and now go paste your link/message on messenger, email or any other way of communication.  Your safety contacts can click on it and go right to it. If you are sending the texts and that is not working...I can't help you.  But as long as you copy/paste the link from the text preview, you should be good to go.  Hope that this helps? ~Steve~

  • @Fred Franks mentioned getting a notification when an activity finished so someone knows he got where he was going. Check out Strava's "If This Then That" integration (http://ifttt.com) It can send a message anywhere when an activity ends. Does loads of other handy things too!

  • @Ruben Bax - you can already share to WhatsApp (at least on Android) - just select no contacts and when you press the send button it pops up the standard share link box and you can select a WhatsApp group.

The UI is misleading, I always though you had to select some contacts - I only found this out thanks to Ethan@Strava.

  • Thanks Ian, didn't realize that. However, this only works when recording with the Strava app. I did notice you can share an active beacon link from within the Strava beacon menu. I haven't tried this yet, but if it also works with Garmin initiated beacons that's probably as good as it gets since WhatsApp apparently doesn't allow automated messages.
