"Please Check Your Data Connection": Bike ride won't upload from iPhone 7

Hey all,

I rode 34 miles on my bike on Friday, and repeated attempts to upload the activity result in Strava spinning its wheels for a few minutes with "Upload in progress..." before giving me "1 pending upload" and "Please Check Your Data Connection." I've shut the phone on and off, turned the data and WiFi on and off, retried the upload, and the activity won't go, even two days later. I even rode my bike on Saturday morning, and that activity uploaded perfectly.

Has anyone had this happen before, and if so, how did they remedy it? I saw stuff on the support website about the possibility of a corrupted activity, but I'm really not thrilled about paying $7/month for mid-length bike rides to randomly vanish.

  • This happened to me last week for my PR for distance rode.  Couldn't upload it.  Tried everything I could think of, including deleting and reinstalling the app from my iPhone 6, which seemed to delete the file permanently.

    Today this has happened again to my wife.

    Strava, what is happening?  Can you please reply with the cause of the problem, and hopefully a workaround that allows us to upload our activities (without losing them), and what you're doing to permanently resolve the issue?  Thank you.

  • Same thing happened again to my wife tonight.  My activity uploaded just fine.

    Still don't know why I received this error last week, and then now twice in a row with my wife.  Strava, any feedback on how I can work around this?  Would be nice to be able to upload my wife's rides.

  • I have been having this issue with a strava as well when using just my watch to record my rides and runs. I have the Apple Watch 3 with cellular and an iPhone X. Everything is updated, even Apple has checked my watch. Does anyone have a solution yet?

  • I never did get an answer from Strava.  But, for some reason, neither I nor my wife have had this issue for many months.  We both still have the iPhone 6.  From my experience, I don't upload my activity until I have good connectivity, or I wait until I get home and am on my local network.

  • Updating iOS worked for me (Strava app was already up-to-date). Also iPhone 6.

  • Same issue just happened to me for the first time; did 2 Peleton rides... the first uploaded fine, the second is “pending” with issue noted above.

  • I have the same issue. It was the longest ride this year and possibly the strongest so I'm gutted I have lost it! Given this is a common issue why isn't Strava doing something about - update your app FGS.

  • Same problem here.  It happens occasionally where I've recorded a ride on my Strava Apple Watch app and it won't synch to the Strava app on my iPhone.  I've tried everything (try to manually force synch by selecting the activity in the "History" section of the watch app, restart my iPhone, restart my Apple Watch, log out of the Strava app and log back in, etc.).  It's really frustrating.

  • Seems Strava is still having issues with uploading over a cellular data link. I just returned from a short ride, stopped in the driveway, finished, saved the ride, and received the same error. Thinking it was a setting to only upload over WIFI, I looked for a place to enable uploading over cellular, but none could be found. After a quick internet search, I see it isn't only myself that's having this problem, and it's been going on for quite some time. Definitely won't be upgrading until this is fixed. {Strava free | Verizon | Samsung Galaxy S7 with current updates}

  • I've uploaded for years with no problem but suddenly experiencing the same as all the other comments here. Frustrating but I don't think there's anything else to be done but for Strava Mobile Team to sort this out!

  • I'll tell you what my suspicions are.  The powers-that-be want us to upgrade our phones.  I'm not joking.  Not falling for it.  When my iPhone 7 dies, I'm replacing it with a dumb phone.  Not worrying about my Strava data (and just enjoying riding as I did when I was a child) will be my new norm.

  • red branch - I am afraid upgrading your phone may not solve the problem. I have done so recently, had iPhone 6 (no problem with Strava) and got iPhone 8.. I can't upload any activities (tried jogging, cycling, and swimming) ever since.

  • Same issue for me. For the last couple of days my rides will not upload on my iphone 7 and i have tried everything suggested by Strava and on the support page. Surely this is a wider issue and they need to put a fix in place.

  • I contacted Strava support about the issue and they said that they are aware of an issue and have engineers currently looking into a fix. It’s been over a week now where I can’t upload my activities so I’m hoping that when and if they do put a fix in, that I don’t lose my pending data. Shambles

  • I'm having the same issues with iPhone XS. Strava keeps giving me the same "turn your phone on and off, log out, etc." answer but it's interesting that it seems to be a widespread issue. has anyone found anything that works? I'm updating my ios now but the app itself is completely updated.
