Swimming for Apple Watch

I’m a longtime Strava user, recently bought an Apple Watch having previously used garmin.

The running and cycling features on the strava app are ok. Why can’t I swim? It means my workouts are not all registered - when I used garmin sync this was not a problem.

Apple Watch is capable of it - why is this not supported? I guess I didn’t do my research well enough but I was not expecting this to be a gap when ‘upgrading’ my watch.

Is this on a roadmap? From forum posts it appears that this was a regression. Is that a strategic decision or because of a change to apple or strava capability?

Very disappointed/frustrated

Thanks for adding your feedback, Tom. As Strava develops our Swimming features, we have an alternative solution: MySwimPro. MySwimPro integrates with the Apple Watch, Garmin, WearOS, Fitbit, etc. and it also syncs to Strava. There’s a free version. You can read more information about it here.

  • Same here, tried MySwimPro as suggested, but the interaction between the apps is either buggy and uselessly complicated. Would appreciate to know when Strava is going to release it's proprietary swimming features for the Apple Watch.

    Thank you very much

    Marco

  • I use the run option on the Strava app in my Apple Watch for swimming then after I load the totals on Strava I change it from run to swim.... I thought this was working great until I joined a swim group and relized my total km swam were over by 1-2km compared to others in my group!!

I tested this 3 weeks in a row and my km’s were over each time 👎🏼 Even the path on the map was different to everybody else’s!!

Does this happen to anyone else ?
How do I stop it ?
It’s basically a waste of time recording my swims!

  • Hi I use an app called swim exporter. You choose swim on the watch and when you finish you open the app on you phone and it automatically syncs with strava

  • Hi
I use HealthFit app to synchronise/export all activities recorded with my apple watch (with native app) to strava. Works very well for my use (swim, run and bike). Previously I used swim pro free version but not very friendly. Possible also for triathlon to switch activity in Apple Watch application and to synchronise/export each activity in strava.

  • Swim Exporter in iOS works great and only $1.99. I had poor results with MySwimPro outdoors

  • Jeff,

I agree with Tom. After using MySwimPro for 9 months, it doesn't really meet my needs. Their app is intended for swim training/coaching plans and not as much for swim tracking. Prior to using MySwimPro (because of Strava's promoting its integration), I used the swim.com app, which has swim tracking algorithms that far exceed the equivalent in MySwimPro, resulting in data that is significantly better and much more accurate than MySwimPro. (The average pace data that syncs from MySwimPro activities is not even close to accurate; it shows that my pace is much faster than is true, by ~10-20 seconds per 100 yards.) I have spent far too much of my own time trying to work with the MySwimPro team to encourage them to resolve their swim tracking data issues, without any real progress.

I've looked at other options, like Swim Exporter, that sync the Apple Watch Activity data, but most had a risk of duplicate activities either in Strava or in the Apple Activities app.

That leads me to want to revert back to swim.com. However, manually exporting the swim.com data and manually importing that data into Strava is still required, even though this should be considered unacceptable in 2019.

If the Strava and Swim.com teams can't figure out how to work together, then just acquire them and integrate their technology into your app. But don't leave us hanging without a real tracking solution for swimming activities. This has gone on for far too long and now needs to be addressed as a priority.

Please either add swim tracking (pool and open water) directly into the Strava Apple Watch app or work with Swim.com (or some other good swim tracking technology) to enable integration (including auto sync/import) between the apps.

    Very disappointed/frustrated as well.

  • I agree with the all previous comments.  When I look at my apple watch which measures that I have swum specific  strokes, lengths, pace, etc. and none of that is transferred to Strava all I can say is what is my annual fee going toward?

Very much disappointed and frustrated as well.

  • Fully agree that (outdoor) swim should be an option on the Strava App for Apple Watch.

Swimming is maybe the most important as that's the only sport where I cannot use my phone Strava App.

  • The lack of clarity from Strava on this basic question is disappointing. I’ve recently downgraded from Summit as topics like this frustrate me and I just don’t see the value.

  • Just bought Apple Watch 4 to use with Strava. Main reason getting it was for swimming. VERY disappointed in finding out that the Strava app on Apple Watch doesn’t support swimming. My bad for not researching in more depth. If running and cycling can be synched, why not swimming? Doesn’t seem like rocket surgery. Guess I will try to work it through Swim Exporter as suggested above.

  • Update - I swam today with my Apple Watch 4 and had downloaded the Swim Exporter app. The Apple Watch Swim info did auto transfer to the Swim Exporter app and all I had to do was go the the Swim Exporter app and it asked if I wanted to export to Strava I clicked “Yes” and it did export all info including heart rate. Seemed to be pretty accurate.

  • Bottom line is you need to integrate swimming.  Or people will go elsewhere. Me too.

  • Regarding the comment by John C., e.g. https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360041752052/comments/360006274372

Why, if I am subscribing to the Premium version of Strava do I need to license another app to perform one of the key activities tracked by the Strava app?  Should swim tracking via the Apple Watch be part of the app itself?

  • Strava: Do you have an update for Apple 4 watch support for Swimming both pool based & open water?  From the Official post in February 2019 Fred implied it was under development?  Additionally does't Strava realize the potential.  Apple Watch is the number 1 watch sold world wide.  By adding not only pool swimming and open water swimming support.  Then Multi-Sport (triathlon tracking).  Please would toss their garmin's and just use their Apple Watch & Strava.  heck maybe I should do my own development at this point.  Thank you,

  • Agreed with all of the above. Got the Apple Watch mainly for swimming and have been pretty frustrated with the lack of support. Strava should have a swimming option or figure out the bug in the pace times with my swim pro, or figure out how to make swim.com less buggy and easily exportable to strava. Heart rate support with swim.com also extremely buggy.

  • The other frustrating thing is that, if I record a swim workout with the Workout app on my apple watch, then manually add it to Strava,  I end up getting duplicate workouts in my workout app (one from the original recording and one from Strava for the manually entered workout).  Then if I go into the Workout app and delete to one entered by Strava, Strava ends up adding it back again.  I could delete the original, but then I would lose all of the details for splits and auto-sets. I could also turn the sync feature off, but  I use the Strava app for running and cycling.

  • MySwimPro does not communicate well with Strava.  I swim with MySwimPro, then it 'syncs' with Strava - however the data is completely different.  Some laps are missing in my Strava feed, and the total activity time is always different, which affects my lap times and splits.

Apple did most of the work with the capabilities and marketing of the Apple Watch.  Upstarts like Swim.com and MySwimPro figured out how to take advantage of said capabilities.  Where's Strava?

I thought Strava was trying to be the premiere workout tool/social platform.  What gives?

  • Garmin works great for the swim/Strava tracking. I also thought I was “upgrading” when I switched to Apple. Cmon Apple! Help us swimmers who want to track our data.

  • Any closer to swim support? Considering I could almost get a decent Garmin mutisport device and Garmin Connect (free) for two years the price of Strava "Premium"/Summit it might be worth it to go back to Garmin Connect (but I dont want to do that for device simplification purposes). Apple Watch swim support has to be on the roadmap, right? As someone in this thread pointed out, the Apple Watch has already taken over as the #1 fitness watch in the world. Strava has got to support it for the activities they track. (Run, Bike, Swim)

On the flip side, I wonder how long it will take Apple to make the Workout app data available in a web interface (like Strava or Garmin Connect) and negate the need for a separate watch (Garmin) or service (Strava) to track everything. I was a die hard Garmin user and with much skepticism switched to an Apple Watch because it was a present and haven't looked back. I know what non-Apple watch folks will say in terms of the "cons" but most are no longer valid with the Apple Watch Series 4 and I am sure the Series 5 will be even better.

Strava please help the swimmers out there with their Apple Watches.

BTW, the lack of Strava support/product marketing response in this forum is alarming. If this a feature on your roadmap I would share that with your customers before they move on to alternatives. Silence makes people think you're not listening or you dont have a real response. Both are bad.

  • Yes, we'd all like to see swim tracking on Strava...  I haven't used Strava much because of this feature gap.

However, I've been using the Activity app on my Apple Watch and iPhone for swimming and it's not bad. ...  The watch learns over a short period of time ( a couple of swims ) what stroke I'm doing as well as being pretty accurate in distance and laps.  It's also pretty accurate to determine whether I'm doing butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, or freestyle.

But, yes, I'd love to see all this data in Strava.  Then, I can standardize on Strave for my cycling, running, AND swimming...  :)

  • I don’t think response so far is satisfactory. Latest related issue - I’ve started using healthlink to sync from Apple activities. This works perfectly for cycling and running. But again the swimming functionality is not up to scratch. For example the moving time vs actual time is misinterpreted by strava in a way that is not true for other activities. Meaning that if I want to track progress on average pace per 100m I can only do that in Apple activities. Strava data is useless because it takes total time rather than moving time. Please can you just fix this part. Basic!

  • I’m not sure what is worse - Still no Strava software for Apple Watch or letting 26 frustrated users posting questions since February 13th without any new reply or comment from Strava. And that’s just this thread. There are multiple other threads with same issue and same sound of crickets. SMH
