Apple Watch Not Uploading/Syncing Unless You Start a New Activity

Since the most recent update I’ve had some issues with my Apple Watch activities not uploading to the iPhone app. Trying to force sync didn’t work but I did find that I could get the activity to sync and leave the unsynced folder on the watch by starting a new activity while refreshing the My Activities feed. Seems to be a bug.

  • UPDATE: My Apple Watch was showing 3 un-synced workouts, two that had actually uploaded and the one from yesterday.  Going for broke, I deleted the two uploaded workouts and within minutes the new one synced!  So far, both of the two I deleted are still in my activity feed. So perhaps the glitch is in the Apple Watch, not being able to hang onto too many workouts?  Hope this helps someone!

  • Same problem for me starting yesterday, Strava Ride will not synch from Apple Watch

  • Have an activity waiting to synch from watch to phone for 2 days. Thought it was due to me now using Garmin as well when starting activities since yesterday. However that activity was done before I started using Garmin so am totally confused as to why it did not synch. Updated iPhone 8, watch and multiple restarts still didn't help. 32km activity still hanging on watch to synch.

  • Yep got me today on my longest and most elevation ride ever, meanwhile my buddy whom I rode with is being drenched in glory.

  • I had the same problems as discussed. Cycles were getting stuck in the unsynced folder on my Apple Watch. I would try all of the above including "faking" a run to try and kick start the syncs but it just uploaded the run not the cycles. I managed to get it to sync last night though by following these steps.

    1. Whilst on the Strava Apple Watch app hold down the side button (not the crown) and wait until the turn off screen comes on.

    2. Once the turn off screen comes on press and hold the crown on the watch. This will then shutdown to the watch screen

    3. Then reopen the Strava watch app and on your phone scroll down on the "you" activities. It then uploaded the cycles for me. Although the cycles are still oddly in the unsynced folder in the apple watch still.

Hope that helps for someone? Still really buggy as this isn't the ideal way to upload! May try the other options as discussed above in the future.

  • Same issue as described above. I have tried the same troubleshooting steps but still have the original un-synced workout stuck on my Apple Watch. Echo the sentiments above. Strava making a big deal about focusing on their paid subscribers and here we are with a fundamental issue that they have sat on for months.

  • Yep, did my second ever 10km run this morning at a decent pace for me so was keen to see a comparison.

Have my iPhone and Apple Watch completely updated and restarted both multiple times.

Also, tried a new workout (which uploaded immediately) but the 10km run is stuck in unsync’d. Really frustrating but obviously I’m not alone...

  • Same problem here for the second time in one week :(

AW Series 3 here ... yesterday, using it the same as today it synced without problems. Today it simply refuses to upload the unsynced session from my watch to my iPhone, no matter what I try!

When this happened last week I finally decided to "uninstall" the AW Strava App (just move the slider next to the Strava in the app-overview list from  "on" to "off" in the Watch app on your phone) but that resulted in me losing that unsynced session completely.

If Strava wants my money for a subscription they need to do better with this. No way I am considering going "premium" with this buggy app. (Is it only me or is the app draining your Apple Watch's battery as well? It's end of party after barely 3 hours logging)

  • Absolutely infuriating- longest ride stuck and would not sync. Tried everything. Please tell me there’s some sort of solution! :(

  • This works for me as suggested by Sam Robins (but I also still have the rides sat in the unsync list on my watch - so am just deleting manually until Strava sort this annoyance):

  • Having the same issue as all. Usually I can sync my rides by starting a fake workout, but sometimes the rides get stuck in limbo.

Disappointing after I just signed up for premium.

  • Hey everyone. There has been a solution posted by Strava for this on Monday 15th June 2020 found here.

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216917287-Troubleshooting-Syncing?mobile_site=true

I just did step one and signed out of the app on my phone and signed by on again and boom - activities synced.

  • I’m pretty sure putting my watch on charge even if it doesn’t need it, then opening the app on phone worked twice for me so far, might be coincidental.

  • Not sure whether a coincidence or not but my last few rides have sync’d just fine.

Difference being that when hitting “finish” then “save”, I have stopped then pressing the crown to take me straight back to the watch face, and instead leaving on the Strava app until I see the upload on my iPhone.

It shouldn’t affect the upload to Strava but maybe it does.

    Worth a try...

  • Same issues, I agree Strava should spend some serious time on this, not having us go in circles, and re-posting the same link. Most of these maybe fixes are total waste of our time.

Kind of think there are a "few" Apple users MAYBE Strava you should fix the issues before and maybe a little less time try to sell us something that is obviously broken.

  • That recently published article from Strava doesn't apply to my situation.  That still assumes the watch IS transferring the data to your phone in the first place, but giving an upload/pending error when it tries to send it to Strava's server.

My issue is, for the last week, no workouts recorded using my watch (I dont take my phone running) will sync over to the phone once completed.  No amount of restarting, logging in and out, forcing sync from watch app is sending the data to the phone.

  • My Apple Watch shows that it has synced my ride but it’s not showing up in my acc on my iPhone app or when I login through the web. This very frustrating.  This only just started happening this week.

  • I finished an activity on my Apple watch and hit Save. Had my phone with me at the time. Got a notification on both watch and phone to say ready to upload, open Strava on iPhone. Did that but nothing is coming up in the iOS app. There is no activity listed in Unsynced on the watch app, so the activity has apparently disappeared completely.

Hoping for a fix, although it appears that Strava don’t seem to care about this thread as there has been no response from them.

  • So the good news is, my watch is now syncing with the phone once more.  The bad news is, it required losing my last 3 workouts.

Nothing ground breaking here.  Simply deleted the app from my watch, re-installed (losing any unsynced workouts in the progress of course) and re-authorised the Apple Watch to the Strava app.

No doubt it will fault again in the near future.

  • Just finished a 30 mi. ride (on a 50:16 fixed gear no less) definitely with several PRs, and NOTHING in the way of the apple watch app syncing to my phone. Wildly frustrating, especially given that the Strava folks seem to not care very much in dealing with what is apparently a widely-felt experience.  And to now be paying for Premium!? FOH

  • Had two days of runs that Apple Watch said we’re synced but that did not appear on iPhone app. I did as Sam Robbins suggests above and the two runs synced nearly immediately and are now accurately recorded on iPhone Strava app. Strava has been buggy from roughly a February update. I hope they can address these issues as I am a subscriber and would hope for a better experience.

  • Cycling rides not syncing to Apple activities. I have restarted both devices (phone and watch) deleted and reloaded Strava on phone, disconnected and reconnected link between the two. Nothing has helped. This started when I upgraded to the premium Strava. VERY frustrating

  • Same here. Hopefully an upodate will fix this soon. I had ended my Strava subscription because I don't run so much anymore but now I do inline skating and Strava can record that, which the apple watch own app can't so I re-subscribed, but now first of all the Strava app on the watch does not have inline skate as option (luckily the iPhone Strava app does) and if I record heartrate using the apple watch Strava app "training" option, it won't communicate that with the iPhone unless I start a new (bogus) activity.

  • Same problem. Dave Smith’s solution (from June 14th) worked the first time this happened, but it happened again tonight and nothing is working. That article referenced above is unrelated to Apple Watch sync issues. And this started happening to me after upgrading / starting to pay. Really frustrating - I wish Strava would address this.

  • PS interestingly enough it now works well. I did not change anything. Since I found that starting/stopping a new activity pushes the recorded apple watch strava activity to the cloud and back into the iphone strava list of activities, this seems to happen without the need to start/stop a bogus activity. It takes a couple minutes but then it appears. I then see the inline skating activity and above or below it the "exercise" activity with only basic data like HR and time. It would be good to be able to 'add' the HR data to the more complete inline skating activity that the iphone recorded but i'm satisfied as it is.

  • I've been having the same problem. It started for me in the spring of 2020. About 9/10 rides will not sync unless I start a new ride. Often I have to start a new ride 2-3 times to get it to work. I've been working with Strava support on this for over a month now and unfortunately they don't seem to have a solution. In fact, they've now officially given up on trying to solve this. Here's a quote from the support team:

"I'm sorry but we don't have the bandwidth to troubleshoot this particular syncing issue. We are working to improve how activity uploads work from the Strava Watch app but at this time, I don't have a time frame on when this will be rolled out."

So, long story short, looks like this is going to be buggy for the foreseeable future.

  • Sam Robins’a solution worked for me (June 12, 2020 12:29), mine didn’t upload possibly because the watch battery ran out before close enough to sync (I think perhaps my Bluetooth was off on the phone at the time too). But who knows if it will be a fix next time, not sure why it worked...Thanks Sam!

  • I recently had a ride that wouldn’t upload and I tried all the restarts of both devices, manual upload, doing a new workout etc....

Finally got it to work when I left my house and got outside of wifi range, turned wifi off on my phone and it synced when the watch and phone were using cellular data. Opened Strava app on phone and refreshed and the ride finally showed up.

May have been a coincidence but worth a try.
