Apple Watch Not Uploading/Syncing Unless You Start a New Activity

Since the most recent update I’ve had some issues with my Apple Watch activities not uploading to the iPhone app. Trying to force sync didn’t work but I did find that I could get the activity to sync and leave the unsynced folder on the watch by starting a new activity while refreshing the My Activities feed. Seems to be a bug.

  • Same problem with my Apple Watch 2. Syncing the workout manual with the Apple Watch doesn’t work. Hope Strava will fix this issue because it’s annoying.

  • Having this problem as well. I tried everything. When I start a new activity it immediately uploads and the old one doesn't.

Still trying to synchronize it for the past few hours...

    Having a serie 3!

  • Same here. I’m updated to most current software on iPhone, watch, and app. Apple Watch won’t sync to phone app

  • Same bug here. Has been persistent for months.

  • I have the same problem. When it tap Sync, it says my watch is not connected to a network, but it is. So, I restarted both the iPhone and Apple Watch. The same thing happened. Like several folks posted, I then had to create a new activity, let it run for a few seconds, then delete it.

It would be reassuring if Strava told us they don't know why this happens, and they're working on the problem.

  • I had the same problems as discussed. Cycles were getting stuck in the unsynced folder on my Apple Watch. I would try all of the above including "faking" a run to try and kick start the syncs but it just uploaded the run not the cycles. I managed to get it to sync last night though by following these steps.

    1. Whilst on the Strava Apple Watch app hold down the side button (not the crown) and wait until the turn off screen comes on.

    2. Once the turn off screen comes on press and hold the crown on the watch. This will then shutdown to the watch screen

    3. Then reopen the Strava watch app and on your phone scroll down on the "you" activities. It then uploaded the cycles for me. Although the cycles are still oddly in the unsynced folder in the apple watch still.

Hope that helps for someone? Still really buggy as this isn't the ideal way to upload! May try the other options as discussed above in the future.

  • That recently published article from Strava doesn't apply to my situation.  That still assumes the watch IS transferring the data to your phone in the first place, but giving an upload/pending error when it tries to send it to Strava's server.

My issue is, for the last week, no workouts recorded using my watch (I dont take my phone running) will sync over to the phone once completed.  No amount of restarting, logging in and out, forcing sync from watch app is sending the data to the phone.

  • My Apple Watch shows that it has synced my ride but it’s not showing up in my acc on my iPhone app or when I login through the web. This very frustrating.  This only just started happening this week.

  • I've been having the same problem. It started for me in the spring of 2020. About 9/10 rides will not sync unless I start a new ride. Often I have to start a new ride 2-3 times to get it to work. I've been working with Strava support on this for over a month now and unfortunately they don't seem to have a solution. In fact, they've now officially given up on trying to solve this. Here's a quote from the support team:

"I'm sorry but we don't have the bandwidth to troubleshoot this particular syncing issue. We are working to improve how activity uploads work from the Strava Watch app but at this time, I don't have a time frame on when this will be rolled out."

So, long story short, looks like this is going to be buggy for the foreseeable future.

  • I have had the same issue for two weeks now; bike rides upload from Garmin computer to Strava, but do not appear on Apple watch Activities app. CrossFit workouts recorded on Strava and on Apple watch Workouts do not appear on Apple watch Activities App. I've tried shutting down and restarting each device, logging out and back into all accounts, and checked all permissions from each party.

Can anyone please advise how to fix this bug?

    Thanks!

  • Can confirm the issue, same here (iOS 13.3.1, iOS App 141.0.0). And like Lee described, after I started a new activity the last pending activity is uploaded. Starting a manuell sync on the Watch does not finish the pending upload.

  • I've been having the same issue. My apple watch says that the activity has sync'd but then won't show up in Strava app on phone.

  • Same thing here. Done everything, restarted watch and phone and it doesn’t upload. What makes it more annoying is that support clearly doesn’t even read these threads...

  • Hey Strava,

I'm wondering if you have a fix for this thread:

Apple Watch Not Uploading/Syncing Unless You Start a New Activity

    Thanks

  • Tried all of the above. Difference is, when I start a new activity for a few seconds.. that new 5 second activity uploads right away. I’ve had this happen twice now where my initial 30min-1hour workout disappears to who knows where.
Plan is to avoid using the Apple Watch to record workouts unless I have a backup that can upload (Garmin).

  • To work around this I’ve started using the Apple Watch Workout App to record exercise, and set permissions to allow Strava to access Health.  After saving the workout, open the Health App on your iPhone.  You should be prompted to manually upload your session to Strava, and then you can see and edit it there.  Not seamless I know, but a workable solution.  Good Luck!

  • Same issue here - Strava really losing it's shine - first they change the segments history to premium and now cannot get workouts to sync.

  • I am also having issues with this, I used to have to create a walk activity just so it would then sync both of them up and then delete the walk one. But now even if I create any activity they upload straight away and leave the other behind.. STRAVA & Apple Watch just don’t get on together at all.. was going to delete app from watch but not sure if this will then delete the activity I want to sync..

  • This only began for me last night!  I restarted both my phone and watch and the activity synced.  Today it's stuck... nothing.  Tried some of the above but today's activity is still sat in my Unsynced folder on the watch and it's not appearing on my phone!

  • It’s so annoying, I finally managed to get a sync working yesterday, but like another user said if I sit and create a new ride for a few mins it syncs immediately, wasn’t that long ago it would say it was ready for upload after each ride, I’ll use the Apple workout method like as suggested for now

  • Fairly trouble free for years for running and cycling

For swimming I've used the Apple app outdoors and swim.com indoors then loaded via healthfit

Just lost my longest run in years which is something of a .......

If I'm going to have to 'work around' for all activities then you have to question whether it's worth it for Apple geeks

  • This works for me as suggested by Sam Robins (but I also still have the rides sat in the unsync list on my watch - so am just deleting manually until Strava sort this annoyance):

  • Same issues, I agree Strava should spend some serious time on this, not having us go in circles, and re-posting the same link. Most of these maybe fixes are total waste of our time.

Kind of think there are a "few" Apple users MAYBE Strava you should fix the issues before and maybe a little less time try to sell us something that is obviously broken.

  • I finished an activity on my Apple watch and hit Save. Had my phone with me at the time. Got a notification on both watch and phone to say ready to upload, open Strava on iPhone. Did that but nothing is coming up in the iOS app. There is no activity listed in Unsynced on the watch app, so the activity has apparently disappeared completely.

Hoping for a fix, although it appears that Strava don’t seem to care about this thread as there has been no response from them.

  • So the good news is, my watch is now syncing with the phone once more.  The bad news is, it required losing my last 3 workouts.

Nothing ground breaking here.  Simply deleted the app from my watch, re-installed (losing any unsynced workouts in the progress of course) and re-authorised the Apple Watch to the Strava app.

No doubt it will fault again in the near future.

  • Same problem here. Also up to date with all latest software. Super annoying, also since it’s impossible to look into the data of the unsynced run. Come on Strava, fix these basics. Spending so much money on device & subscription I’d expect to be rid of these kind of annoying bugs!

  • I am suffering from the same bug. Have had one of my hardest rides stuck in limbo as a result. I reached out to support and have not received inspiring responses. I linked them to this thread in hopes that they can see that this problem is not specific to me.
