  • Allow user-selected segmant Leaderboard participation without making the entire activity public

I think this is similar, if not the same as Rosemary Taylor (October 15, 2020 17:02) above, which I've upvoted. I'm just phrasing it here a different way.

I understand the privacy implications of entire activities being visible to everyone, and I choose not to allow everyone to view, but I don't see any issues with leader board participation for efforts on segments (smaller parts of an activity) that I choose, thus allowing me to be on the leader board but still keep entire activities private or for my followers. For the amount of money you are now charging for subscriptions this seems like a logical feature, since you place so much emphasis on the leaderboards. My times would but public, but nothing else about the activity would be. Obviously the segment's location would be known and it would be known that I did that segment, but only my segment time and date (not time) of effort is posted.

These boards are a quite strange way of doing this, since i can't comment on other's requests. Have you considered uservoice?

  • Simple 1mile blackout of home location on all Flyby routes and this feature would no longer be a privacy issue. Another option is for users to choose what can and can not be shared in Flyby.
It's a great shame Flyby was removed and I'd loved to see it back.

I've used it multiple times to get inspiration for new routes.

  • Make additional information visible when someone request to follow

At present if I don't recognise the name of someone who has asked to follow me then I check their profile page, but if they have their page set to private this doesn't tell me anything new.

It would be helpful to as a minimum to see what clubs they're in and their list of followers/follows, so I can understand if we have a shared connection. Ideally it would be good to be able to see their activity and full profile.  Perhaps make it visible for 24 hours to the person they've requested to follow?

  • I would like to configure the default privacy of my activities in a per activity type basis.

I use Garmin Watch and my activities are automatically published on strava via their API. I would like to share my running and cycling activities with my followers but I do not want to share my workout, training, and other activities.

The Goal is that I can continue to upload all my data to Strava without having to manually update each activity I do to set the appropriate privacy level.

I hope this is something you can add to your roadmap, I believe it will be very useful to many of us who like to track our performance on Strava but only want to share certain activities publicly.

  • Why am I shown a "welcome to flyby" message every single time I look at a flyby? It is absolutely insane. It makes flybys unusable. It serves no possible purpose. It is literally the worst UI I have ever encountered.

  • I would like to see the ability to move the center of the Privacy Zone circle.  Currently all you can do is click on Regenerate, but I have not found it to work at all.  The Privacy Zone stays in the exact same location any time I've tried it, and even if it did work I do not have control over where it is placed.  Ride With GPS has a great implementation of their privacy zone.  You can see the zone in a large map and then simply click on the map to move the center.  It works perfectly and is very simple to use.

The reason I'd like to see this is so that I can move the Privacy Zone so that it doesn't overlap with some segments that are nearby.  Currently those segments won't show up on my ride because of the presence of the privacy zone.  I have to reduce the size of the zone to its smallest setting to have them show up, which defeats the purpose of having a privacy zone since there are very few houses on the street.

  • Thanks Soren for the update.
Please do not forget "hide start time".

  • Photos should be default "only me" and you should be able to select which ones you want to share with followers or everyone.

  • The new privacy function to hide your start/end points need a "Select on Map" option. Many strava users live in places without addresses thereby making the current function useless. Auto-population does not work.

Please let us select using a map or make it more easy to modify on maps. Thank you.

  • Here's something I've spotted that I think should be on the Strava Development Plan:

In Privacy Controls on my Strava App I have set 'hide start and end points at a specific address' to be a mile from my home address.

The issue with this is that if anyone else visits me and we leave from my house, the app will report 'Chris L rode with...' and another person's route will be visible to whoever is allowed to see it and they could deduce where *my* home address is.

I suggest that the 'Rode with' feature needs to respect all other riders' privacy settings and hide *everyone's* start and end points, as determined by the highest privacy setting of whoever was amongst the group of riders that went out together.

  • Hi, I have learned how to hide the maps from my activities, but recently the location started showing up at the top of my activities in words (I.e. San Francisco, CA). I was told there was not currently a way to turn off or disable this. I would really like have the option to disable or turn off ALL information regarding location for each activity. The reasons for this are some towns are very small, I don't necessarily want people seeing where my family lives, where I go on vacation, etc. Thank you

  • Hi. I suggest to have an option for HIDING TIME OF ACTIVITY. It's really important because I don't want to share the time I have my activities, as Jeff D. has suggested above (11 votes so far). Few reasons for that: Work colleagues: I don't want them to see the time I do my activities. Even working from home and being able to manage my time, still I believe someone can use that against me, in case if one day they want to do so. I do believe we (Strava users and subscribers)  should be able to decide which information to share.
Also it provides, for who does want to do something bad to the rider, a pattern about the rider's activity starting time.
Looks like a simple solution - ADDING AN OPTION FOR HIDING ACTIVITY STARTING TIME.
    Regards.

  • In Garmin I can customize the default view permissions of activities by their activity type (running, walking, swimming, cycling, etc.). It would be cool to have this feature here as well.

  • Please add conditional default privacy.

I love Strava automatically sharing all my bike rides with followers, flybys and the occasional segment onlooker as soon as my Edge gets Wifi or bluetooth, kind of like it to have (but not share) my unspectacular commutes, the occasional therapeutical strength work and things like that (this is what fitness smartwatches are made for), but I absolutely hate the idea of filling my buddies' feed with snippets of five minute heart rate and junk like that.

Just keep the easy default privacy setting and add an empty list of workout type/default privacy override tuples that can be filled by advanced users (remember: advanced users are those most likely to subscribe). Your typical Edge-toting cyclist with a Vivoactive for the occasional stability workout would then set "default default" to private and "cycling default" to share. Because strictly speaking, sharing cannot be undone, the alternative wouldn't be "default share, manually hide", it would be the reverse: default to hide, manually share the nice onces (which is also more practical: after a nice ride the cyclist will check Strava anyways, an opportunity for manual sharing, but manual hiding after some minor activity is only a chore).

Bonus points for also allowing conditions on that list, e.g. "only override the default default for cycling if duration is longer than x minutes" (clearly duration would be the lowest hanging fruit in conditions because it's quite universal between activity types)

  • I would like to be able to have my activities included in challenges, while still keeping them private (visible only to me). Some of the distance challenges would have me making public ALL of my running activities during a given time period, meaning that my route, start, and stop time is fully trackable. It really struck me when your app 'awarded' me a 'Local Legend' (which I really wish wasn't there) on a segment that I run almost every day at almost the same time, means that everyone who might be interested, for whatever reason, knows my exact movements. Even with the radius around my home blocked (5/8ths of a mile) it is still easy to predict where I will be, and this is unsettling. Yet I do find the challenges motivational; but now that I've made everything private, those are out the window. This cannot be a difficult programming problem to fix. Thanks.

  • Activities that take place entirely within one's privacy zone should not have a map at all.

Currently the activity appears with a blank map centred on the start location (generally someone's house) and the smaller the radius of the activity, the more zoomed the map.  If you run around your block 5 times, your house, your street, the 100m radius around it, is displayed.  Essentially making the privacy zone small enough as to be useless.

Worse, if you use a treadmill or turbo at home and GPS is on and your activity doesn't have "treadmill" or "turbo ticked", the activity will be centred on your house!

This needs rectifying immediately.  Activity taking place entirely within a privacy zone needs to have no map visible to followers/other users.

  • John, I can confirm the same notifications go out.  I have mine set to upload as private so I can edit the title, pictures, and such before others see it.  The second I change the privacy to everyone my dad gets an alert on my phone that I just completed an activity because he has it set to get notifications for my activities.

  • Can we have the option to select our own privacy setting for certain activities ? Ie. Walks to ‘You Only’ Running to ‘Everyone’
I use Strava a lot for cycling, running , walking & working out. I’m not too sure my friends who follow me are that interested in me going for a walk or workout & filling up their feed. Also, it’s a pain having to go in twice a day and change my privacy.

  • I want to be able to hide activity by type/category. It will allow me to focus on my swims and runs in my shared feed. The reason that is important is because I am very active and do not want to overload my followers feeds with multiple daily walks.

An example of when I needed this is
I don't record my walks on strava because I don't want to get kudos and share them with everyone, and it is far too much effort to individually set them to private immediately after uploading.

  • I would like to submit a feature request to allow an activity to be private without the link/url.  For example, I have a friend who has concerns about a stalker and would like to share her activities with others.  Currently her options are for it to be private or public or followers.  This would allow her to keep her run private but share it with certain people via the URL.

This feature could also be helpful for professional and amateur athletes to share their "private" workouts with their coaches without making their workouts public or available to followers.

  • I am shown a "welcome" message *every single time* I look at a flyby. It is extremely insulting to be subjected to such a deliberately irritating UI.

  • I generally don't care who sees my activity but it would be nice to have privacy settings for each activity.  In my case, I track my cool downs (usually walking) but I feel like I'm fishing for validation anytime I get kudos for 500 meter walk after completing a 6 mile run. I know I can change the setting for that individual entry after the fact.  But I'd like to permanently set Walking as private to me while leaving all other activities available to the community. No need to respond, I'd just like this recorded as a "Nice to Have".

  • I want to Hide my clubs and don’t want my followers to know that I joined a club. There are clubs that are named 40s Club, Asian club etc that are kinda specific. It depends where the athlete was located and his openness to the public. The reason that is important is because some are not comfortable or ready to tell the world about some specifics. This way an athlete has an option.

  • Feature idea/request: Make it possible to customize privacy settings per activity type.

My problem is that I'm always happy to share my running activities recorded using Garmin on Strava while there are other types of activities, such as yoga or meditations, that I'd like to keep private and therefore not share by default. Right now, I have to go to each activity and manually change its privacy setting, and that's annoying and time consuming.

What are your thoughts on this?

  • PLEASE FIX BLOCKING.  When you block someone on the platform, they should not only be prevented from seeing your activities (which, I believe, works fine), but you should not have to see their comments posted to the activities of those you follow and, assuming you commented on those activities prior to the person you have blocked, even receive an e-mail notification that they've commented.  They shouldn't be able to see your comments, either.  (I'm fine with seeing someone I've blocked on club/segment leaderboards, etc. because it's not obtrusive and easily ignored.)  This is one example of where Facebook has actually done something right.  PLEASE follow their example, and get this feature implemented properly.

    THANK YOU!

  • I cannot find the setting to either allow other atheletes to just follow me, or to make them submit a "request to follow" me. You would think it would be in the privacy controls but I just can't see it there.

    Thanks.

  • Cathy Tait this is controlled by your profile's visibility settings (adjust it to "Followers" for this capability).

You have two options for your profile visibility, Everyone or Followers. In either scenario, there will always be a public version of your profile available to the Strava Community and users on the web. For more information on this setting, see this article.

    • When you select “Everyone”, anyone on Strava can search for and view your complete profile page and activity summaries, as well as follow you.

    • When you select “Followers”, members who follow you can see your complete profile page. Anyone can search for and view certain profile information, and you can approve who follows you.

  • Jojo, thank you for replying. I know I can see who favorited me. I don't have a problem with that so much. I just don't want automatic notifications going out to people when I finish an activity and think that Strava should give control over that to the athlete whose activity it is, not their followers. If Strava is concerned about our privacy, I hope you guys will reconsider how the Favorite function works. Otherwise, I'm going to start blocking people I don't really want to have to block.
